Significance of Autologous Interleukin-6 Production in the HA22T/VGH Cell Model of Hepatocellular Carcinoma
2006
Cancer cells may often support their own growth, survival, and drug resistance by autocrine/paracrine loops based on the production of different factors; results from us and others have shown that similar interleukin-6 (IL-6)-related loops are operative in multiple myeloma and prostate or renal cancer. Because this aspect has not been investigated in detail for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), we have examined it in HA22T/VGH cells. These differ from other primary liver cancer cell lines (that is, HepG2, HuH-6, and HuH-7) in that enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) showed the HA22T/VGH cells to secrete remarkable amounts of IL-6 (16.8 ng/10(6) cells/24 h); this production, due to const…
The association of uric acid with mortality modifies at old age: data from the uric acid right for heart health (URRAH) study
2021
Objectives: In older individuals, the role of serum uric acid (SUA) as risk factor for mortality is debated. This study investigated the association of SUA with all-cause and cardiovascular (CV) mortality in older adults participating in the large multicentre observational uric acid right for heart health (URRAH) study. Methods: Eight thousand URRAH participants aged 65+ were included in the analysis. The predictive role of SUA was assessed using Cox regression models stratified according to the cut-off age of 75. SUA was tested as continuous and categorical variable (age-specific quartiles). The prognostic threshold of SUA for mortality was analysed using receiver operating characteristic …

Fiscal Policy and Asset Price Cycles: Evidence from Four European Countries
2014
OS; International audience; We test for non-linear effects of asset prices on the fiscal policy of four major European economies (France, Italy, Spain and UK). We model government spending and revenue as time-varying transition probability Markovian processes (TVPMS), and find that: (i) in France and Italy, the impact of housing prices on government revenue is conditioned by the phase of the stock price cycle; (ii) a similar asymmetric pattern is found for the UK when considering the effect of stock price fluctuations on government revenue and spending vis-à-vis the troughs and peaks of aggregate wealth; and (iii) for Spain, a fall in government revenue is typically associated with a negati…

Turning a business idea into a real business through an entrepreneurial learning approach based on dynamic start-up business model simulators
2017
In this paper we argue that the use of System Dynamics modelling applied to Business Model design and representation may result in an entrepreneurial learning approach to support potential entrepreneurs in exploring and learn how a business operates and reacts according to alternative strategic choices. As such, a Dynamic Business Modelling approach provides useful insights to start-up entrepreneurs learning processes by capturing and explaining how critical Business Model elements interact to produce enduring competitive advantages over time.
Prevention and Mitigation of Rural Higher Education Dropout in Colombia: A Dynamic Performance Management Approach.
2023
Background: Dropout in higher education is a socio-educational phenomenon that has the scope to limit the benefits of education as well as to widen social disparities. For this reason, governments have implemented various public policies for its prevention and mitigation. However, in rural populations, such policies have proven to be ineffective. The aim of this paper is to simulate public policy scenarios for the treatment of school dropout in rural higher education in Colombia from a Dynamic Performance Management approach. Methodology: To achieve the aim, a parameterised simulation model was designed with data from Colombian state entities in rural higher education. Five simulations were…
Combating illegal phenomena in Professional Football in Italy: the strengths and weaknesses of the actual model of governance
2012
A recent report about football sector in Italy highlights the reduction of competitive equilibrium of the teams, as shown by their poor performances in Europe, the reduction of fans in the stands, the economic losses and the increasing of debts. In a previous research, we analyse the governance model established in Italy in the professional football sector, and we realize a taxonomy framework helpful for identifying appropriate tools and procedures to overcome them (Cincimino, Tomaselli, Carini, 2012). In this research we focus on a particular category of the taxonomy framework of pathologies. The aim is to explore how to contrast the illegal pursuit of football club objectives and extra cl…
