Learning from learners: a non-standard direct approach to the teaching of writing skills in EFL in a university context

2016

Corpora have been used in English as a foreign language materials for decades, and native corpora have been present in the classroom by means of direct approaches such as Data-Driven Learning (Johns, T., and P. King 1991. 'Should you be Persuaded'- Two Samples of Data-Driven Learning Materials. In Classroom Concordancing,1-16. Birmingham University. English Language Research Journal 4.). However, the suitability of using learners' output in classroom tasks remains controversial. This paper describes a pilot study in the application of a non-standard direct approach where Spanish university students are invited to reflect on their production. In the experiment, carried out in several sessions…

On the institutional dimensions of specialised translation in Spain: Hybridity, globalisation and ethics.

2017

Specialised (or specialist) translation - under its various labels - accounts for most of the volume of translated texts. Cronin (2003, p. 12) affirms that 'most of the work done in translation is in the area of scientific, technical, commercial, legal and administrative or institutional translation', and this is also confirmed by Franco (2004). Some of the varieties or modalities are well defined and have wide currency (legal translation, medical translation, scientific and technical translation, audiovisual translation, etc.), while others are being identified and researched on and constitute still provisional inroads into these areas (e.g. environmental translation, newspaper translation…

Niveaux, tendances et facteurs explicatifs de la non-utilisation de la contraception moderne par les femmes exposées au risque de grossesse non désir…

2021

Guinea is one of the West African countries where fertility is still high and declining little, with a worrying health situation (maternal and infant mortality levels among the highest in the world). The level of demographic growth (2.5% per year on average) associated with the low level of socioeconomic development of the country seems difficult to reconcile with the satisfaction of the objectives of sustainable development and thus makes the control of fertility a major challenge.Despite the political will displayed since the early 1980s, the adoption of a national population policy declaration in 1992 and a reproductive health policy in 2001 and the Government's efforts to promote Family…

A Study into the Integration of ICT into a Business Management Course: Challenges and Achievements

2012

Nowadays, the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) play an increasingly important role in education. Indeed, ICT are considered as very useful pedagogic tools, and multimedia resources are constantly being created, updated and shared by university members worldwide. This paper deals with a case of study exploring the way in which the integration of ICT impacts learning in the context of a business management course at the Universitat de València (UV), in Spain. The results of the study point out the need for academic staff and students to acquire the appropriate knowledge and to develop the skills required for an efficient and effective use of ICT in higher education. Musica: Lingua Mundi

2005

“The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not mov’d with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; the motions of his spirit are dull as night, and his affections dark as Erebus. Let not such man be trusted”: this is what one can read in Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice. That music has always been an essential part of human life is beyond question and that man, at the origin of his existence, first sang before speaking is a view which most men hold. Music has been often associated with emotions and language, and most scholars and linguists agree that language stems from music, and that music is a primordial and archaic language used by primitive men…
