Estimates for the Differences of Certain Positive Linear Operators
2020
The present paper deals with estimates for differences of certain positive linear operators defined on bounded or unbounded intervals. Our approach involves Baskakov type operators, the kth order Kantorovich modification of the Baskakov operators, the discrete operators associated with Baskakov operators, Meyer&ndash
Editorial: Zebrafish Epigenetics.
2022
A key area of focus in the field of epigenetics pertains the comprehension of the functional relevance of the epigenetic mechanisms occurring during embryogenesis to shape normal developmental trajectories and adult phenotypes (Atlasi and Stunnenberg, 2017; Skvortsova et al., 2018; Cavalieri, 2021; Marchione et al., 2021). Several lines of evidence highlighted that the small freshwater cyprinid Danio rerio, commonly known as zebrafish, is an excellent vertebrate model for research purposes in the field of epigenetics (Huang et al., 2013; Balasubramanian et al., 2019; Horsfield, 2019; Cavalieri, 2020). The general strengths of zebrafish over concurrent models are well known: ease of husbandr…
Long-term analysis (1863–2002) of environmental change in the Capo Feto area (Mediterranean sea)
2004
The area of Capo Feto represents one of the few remaining salt-marshy zones in Sicily. It lies within a site of importance for the Community (defined as a “sito di importanza comunitaria” (SIC)), which also includes Margi Spanò and Margi Milo. The Capo Feto and Margi Spanò marshlands have also been identified by the Ministry for the Environment as an area deserving special protection (“zona a protezione speciale” (ZPS)). Moreover, in 1999, 150 ha of the Capo Feto area were included in a project for environmental rehabilitation as part of the European Union “Life-Nature 2000” programme (Comitato Tecnico-Scientifico Area di Capo Feto, 1997). Prior to this, the area had become somewhat degrade…
Epigenetic Modulation of Chromatin States and Gene Expression by G-Quadruplex Structures
2020
G-quadruplexes are four-stranded helical nucleic acid structures formed by guanine-rich sequences. A considerable number of studies have revealed that these noncanonical structural motifs are widespread throughout the genome and transcriptome of numerous organisms, including humans. In particular, G-quadruplexes occupy strategic locations in genomic DNA and both coding and noncoding RNA molecules, being involved in many essential cellular and organismal functions. In this review, we first outline the fundamental structural features of G-quadruplexes and then focus on the concept that these DNA and RNA structures convey a distinctive layer of epigenetic information that is critical for the c…
Modified Donnan phenomena in polyaniline with poly(vinyl sulphonate) chains
1993
We develop a physical model, based on the modified Donnan phenomena ideas introduced previously by the authors, to describe the acid doping of the conducting polymer polyaniline. The theory is motivated by the experimental work of Asturias et al. [Ber. Bunsenges. Phys. Chem. 95, 1381 (1991)]. Good agreement between theory and experiment is found.
Structural and functional salivary disorders in type 2 diabetic patients
2006
Gene Amplification-Associated Overexpression of the Selenoprotein tRNA Enzyme TRIT1 Confers Sensitivity to Arsenic Trioxide in Small-Cell Lung Cancer
2021
Simple Summary Small-cell lung cancer accounts for approximately 13% of all new lung cancer diagnoses, but in contrast to non-small-cell lung cancer, the implementation of targeted treatments in small-cell lung cancer has been limited, with little improvement in the clinical outcome in the last several decades. Exploring new pathways for targeted therapy, we have observed that extra-copies of the tRNA modifier TRIT1, involved in the translation of selenoproteins, confers sensitivity to arsenic trioxide in small-cell lung cancer. This finding could open a new therapeutic niche for a tumor type with such a dismal clinical course. The alteration of RNA modification patterns is emerging as a co…
Photoluminescence of Point Defects in Silicon Dioxide by Femtosecond Laser Exposure
2021
The nature of the radiation-induced point defects in amorphous silica is investigated through online photoluminescence (PL) under high intensity ultrashort laser pulses. Using 1030 nm femtosecond laser pulses with a repetition rate of 1 kHz, it is possible to study the induced color centers through their PL signatures monitored during the laser exposure. Their generation is driven by the nonlinear absorption of the light related to the high pulse peak powers provided by femtosecond laser, allowing to probe the optical properties of the laser exposed region. The experiment is conducted as a function of the laser pulse power in samples with different OH contents. The results highlight the dif…
The Epigenetics of the Endocannabinoid System
2020
The endocannabinoid system (ES) is a cell-signalling system widely distributed in biological tissues that includes endogenous ligands, receptors, and biosynthetic and hydrolysing machineries. The impairment of the ES has been associated to several pathological conditions like behavioural, neurological, or metabolic disorders and infertility, suggesting that the modulation of this system may be critical for the maintenance of health status and disease treatment. Lifestyle and environmental factors can exert long-term effects on gene expression without any change in the nucleotide sequence of DNA, affecting health maintenance and influencing both disease load and resistance. This potentially …
Doxorubicin anti-tumor mechanisms include Hsp60 post-translational modifications leading to the Hsp60/p53 complex dissociation and instauration of re…
2017
Hsp60 is a pro-carcinogenic chaperonin in certain tumor types by interfering with apoptosis and with tumor cell death. In these tumors, it is not known whether or not doxorubicin anti-tumor effects include a blockage of the pro-carcinogenic action of this protein. We used the human lung mucoepidermoid cell line NCI-H292 and different doses of doxorubicin to measure cell viability, cell cycle progression, cell senescence indicators, Hsp60 levels and its post-translational modifications as well as the release of the chaperonin into the extracellular environment. Cell viability was reduced in relation to doxorubicin dose and this was paralleled by the appearance of cell senescence markers. Con…
