Nonlinear pulse shaping by coherent addition of multiple redshifted solitons

2011

International audience; The injection of a phase- and amplitude-shaped pulse into a photonic-crystal fiber provides additional degrees of freedom that can significantly influence the nature of nonlinear propagation and nonlinear and dispersive interactions. This strong sensitivity of nonlinear effects-particularly the Raman soliton self-frequency shift-greatly extends the parameter space available to generate tailored output fields for applications such as microscopic imaging. By numerical simulations, we identify the relevant interpulse interactions, and we experimentally demonstrate the additional capabilities of this nonlinear pulse-shaping method.

Vortex beam generation and other advanced optics experiments reproduced with a twisted-nematic liquid-crystal display with limited phase modulation

2016

In this work we propose the use of twisted-nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulators (TN-LC-SLM) as a useful tool for training students in the manipulation of light beams with phase-only masks. In particular, we focus the work on the realization of phase-only gratings and phase-only spiral phases for the generation of vortex beams, beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). Despite the extensive activity in this field, its experimental implementation for educational purposes is limited because it requires the use of very expensive high-resolution liquid-crystal on silicon (LCOS) SLMs. Here, we show that a low-cost experimental implementation can be done with older TNLC technology.…

Side-lobe suppression in electro-optic pulse generation

2007

A simple method is presented for rejecting undesirable tails and wings, around the main pulses of a periodic train, which is generated by electro-optical, sinusoidal phase modulation. It is shown that, by using a broadband optical carrier, the nonlinear chirp components generated by sinusoidal phase modulation can be filtered out. Thus, nearly apodised picosecond pulsation can be generated.

High performance configuration of all-raman N × 40 Gbit/s RZ-DPSK systems over ultrawaveTM maps

2007

In order to explore the impact of the DPSK format on best system configuration, and to cross-check the simulation tools, transmission experiments involving 16 × 40 Gbit/s WDM channels on a recirculating loop including a symmetric UltrawaveTM fiber dispersion map are performed. In these experiments the RZ-DPSK format is used, and each 100 km span is brought to optical transparency with 75%(25%) of backward (forward) Raman gain. The pre-compensation is experimentally varied, and a significant transmission improvement after 4000 km for the pre-compensation of -350 ps/nm is observed.

Synchronized photonic modulators driven by surface acoustic waves

2013

Photonic modulators are one of the most important elements of integrated photonics. We have designed, fabricated, and characterized a tunable photonic modulator consisting of two 180 degrees-dephased output waveguide channels, driven by a surface acoustic wave in the GHz frequency range built on (Al,Ga)As. Odd multiples of the fundamental driven frequency are enabled by adjusting the applied acoustic power. A good agreement between theory and experimental results is achieved. The device can be used as a building block for more complex integrated functionalities and can be implemented in several material platforms. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Gap solitons and modulation instability in a dynamic Bragg grating with nonlinearity management

2008

International audience; We investigate the occurrence of modulation instability in systems in which a dynamic Bragg grating consists of alternating positive and negative Kerr coefficients. The dependence of modulation instability gain spectra over the perturbation wavenumber and system parameters is portrayed near and at the edges of the photonic band gap structure. Further, we demonstrate the generation of traveling gap solitons near the photonic band gap structure through the modulation instability

Realization of a robust single-parameter quantized charge pump

2008

This paper describes a novel scheme for quantized charge pumping based on single-parameter modulation. The device is realized in an AlGaAs-GaAs gated nanowire. A particular advantage of this realization is that operation in the quantized regime can be achieved in a potentially large range of amplitude and dc off-set of the driving signal. This feature together with the simple configuration might enable large scale parallel operation of many such devices.

How does environmental variation translate into biological processes?

2001

Birth and death rates, as so many other biological processes, are usually not linearly related to environmental variation. Common examples of non-linear response forms include unimodal ‘‘optimum-type’’ responses and various saturating responses. These responses filter the signal coming from the environment to a corresponding biological process. We explored how different types of environmental signal may be transformed to a biological process. We were interested in the effect of the filter on modulation of (1) the variance of the signal, on (2) the variance-covariance structure between the signal and the filtered signal, and on (3) the match between the power spectra of the signal and the fi…

Imperfect symmetry breaking

2018

By considering a nonlinear resonator driven by an elliptically polarized beam, we study experimentally the robustness of spontaneous symmetry breaking to controlled asymmetries. In particular, we reveal that different asymmetries can balance each other.

A two-dimensional liquid-filled ionization chamber array prototype for small-field verification: characterization and first clinical tests.

2012

In this work we present the design, characterization and first clinical tests of an in-house developed two-dimensional liquid-filled ionization chamber prototype for the verification of small radiotherapy fields and treatments containing such small fields as in radiosurgery, which consists of 2 mm × 2 mm pixels arranged on a 16×8 rectangular grid. The ionization medium is isooctane. The characterization of the device included the study of depth, field-size and dose-rate dependences, which are sufficiently moderate for a good operation at therapy radiation levels. However, the detector presents an important anisotropic response, up to ≃ 12% for front versus near-lateral incidence, which can …
