A note on the unirationality of a moduli space of double covers

In this note we look at the moduli space $\cR_{3,2}$ of double covers of genus three curves, branched along 4 distinct points. This space was studied by Bardelli, Ciliberto and Verra. It admits a dominating morphism $\cR_{3,2} \to {\mathcal A}_4$ to Siegel space. We show that there is a birational model of $\cR_{3,2}$ as a group quotient of a product of two Grassmannian varieties. This gives a proof of the unirationality of $\cR_{3,2}$ and hence a new proof for the unirationality of ${\mathcal A}_4$.

We propose upper bounds for the number of modular constituents of the restriction modulo [math] of a complex irreducible character of a finite group, and for its decomposition numbers, in certain cases.
Frobenius polynomials for Calabi–Yau equations

We describe a variation of Dwork’ s unit-root method to determine the degree 4 Frobenius polynomial for members of a 1-modulus Calabi–Yau family over P1 in terms of the holomorphic period near a point of maximal unipotent monodromy. The method is illustrated on a couple of examples from the list [3]. For singular points, we find that the Frobenius polynomial splits in a product of two linear factors and a quadratic part 1− apT + p3T 2. We identify weight 4 modular forms which reproduce the ap as Fourier coefficients.
Near abelian profinite groups

Abstract A compact p-group G (p prime) is called near abelian if it contains an abelian normal subgroup A such that G/A has a dense cyclic subgroup and that every closed subgroup of A is normal in G. We relate near abelian groups to a class of compact groups, which are rich in permuting subgroups. A compact group is called quasihamiltonian (or modular) if every pair of compact subgroups commutes setwise. We show that for p ≠ 2 a compact p-group G is near abelian if and only if it is quasihamiltonian. The case p = 2 is discussed separately.
On the nonarchimedean quadratic Lagrange spectra

We study Diophantine approximation in completions of functions fields over finite fields, and in particular in fields of formal Laurent series over finite fields. We introduce a Lagrange spectrum for the approximation by orbits of quadratic irrationals under the modular group. We give nonarchimedean analogs of various well known results in the real case: the closedness and boundedness of the Lagrange spectrum, the existence of a Hall ray, as well as computations of various Hurwitz constants. We use geometric methods of group actions on Bruhat-Tits trees. peerReviewed

Several new 2-{[(2E)-3-phenylprop-2-enoyl]amino}benzamides 12a–s and 17t–v were synthesized by stirring in pyridine the (E)-3-(2-R1-3-R2-4-R3-phenyl)acrylic acid chlorides 11c–k and 11t–v with the appropriate anthranilamide derivatives 10a–c or the 5-iodoanthranilic acid 13. In this paper, we seamlessly combine three transmission techniques to design an improved performance broadband mobile communication system with two transmit antennas. In so doing, we took inspiration from the V.34 data modem toolbox designed for public switched telephone network. We modified the constellation shaping by shell mapping algorithm to apply it only to the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) frame sent by the first antenna, in such a way that the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is also reduced for the second antenna. This paper investigates the effects of channel estimation errors on the symbol-error-rate (SER) performance of a cooperative communication system operating in an amplify-and- forward (AF) mode. A pilot symbol assisted modulation scheme with linear minimum mean square estimation (LMMSE) is used for the channel estimation. An accurate and easy-to-evaluate SER expression is presented for uncoded cooperative communication systems with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and phase-shift keying (PSK) constellations. Reducing the peak and average power for OFDM systems using QAM by constellation shaping

In this paper, we present a shell mapping scheme to reduce the peak and average power of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals using quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) by constellation shaping. Our approach can be considered as an extension of the shell mapping technique introduced originally in the V.34 recommendation of ITU-T. The shell mapping method uses multiple cost functions, each having the OFDM block length N as a parameter. The cost functions are presented in closed form for any N. Fiber-reinforced composite materials are often used in structural applications in humid, marine, and offshore environments. Superior mechanical properties are compromised by environmental ageing and hydrolytic degradation. Glass fibers are the most broadly used type of fiber reinforcement to date.
