From the oxygen to the organ protection: Erythropoietin as protagonist in internal medicine

2006

Erythropoietin (EPO), already known as the stimulating hormone for erythropoiesis, has shown different and interesting pleiotropic actions. It does not only affect erythroid cells, but also myeloid cells, lymphocytes and megakaryocytes. This hormone can also enhance phagocytic function of the polymorphonuclear cells and reduce the activation of macrophages, thus modulating the inflammatory process. Moreover, hematopoietic and endothelial cells probably have the same cellular origin, and the discovery of erythropoietin receptors (EPO-R) also on mesangial and myocardial cells, smooth muscle fibrocells and neurons has prompted the study of the non-erythropoietic functions of this hormone. The in…

Practical Implementation of a Synchronous PWM Strategy for Low Switching Frequency FOC of im Drives with ATSAM3X8E Microcontroller

2021

This paper presents a practical implementation of synchronous PWM modulation algorithm for an induction motor field oriented control powered by a DC/AC inverter and implemented on a low-cost microcontroller, the ATSAM3X8E. In particular, a simple algorithm, capable to calculate automatically an optimized set of frequency modulation indexes will be presented. Hysteresis bands are also introduced in the algorithm in order to avoid multiple changeovers during modulation index transitions. Experimental tests and their results will be shown and discussed, highlighting the benefits of the present algorithm, such as reduction of current harmonic content, reduction of current ripple and, consequent…

Experimental Study of Vibrations in Face Milling Cutting

2014

Abstract The present paper consists in a comparison of vibrations measured during face milling cutting with two constructive variants of milling cutters (one with classic insert clamping and other with a quick insert adjustment mechanism). The goal of the study is to determine if the new clamping mechanism of the inserts has a similar behaviour with the classic one and can withstand milling conditions without introducing additional vibrations in the system

Sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) bacterial infection and confinement stress acts on F-type lectin (DlFBL) serum modulation

2014

The F-lectin, a fucose-binding protein found from invertebrates to ectothermic vertebrates, is the last lectin family to be discovered. Here, we describe effects of two different types of stressors, bacterial infection and confinement stress, on the modulation of European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) F-lectin (DlFBL), a well-characterized serum opsonin, using a specific antibody. The infection of the Vibrio alginolyticus bacterial strain increased the total haemagglutinating activity during the 16-day testing period. The DlFBL value showed an upward regulation on the first, second and last days and underwent a slight downward regulation 4 days post-challenge. In contrast, the effect o…

Molecular docking and pharmacogenomics of vinca alkaloids and their monomeric precursors, vindoline and catharanthine.

2011

International audience; Vinblastine and vincristine are dimeric indole alkaloids derived from (formerly: ). Their monomeric precursor molecules are vindoline and catharanthine. While vinblastine and vincristine are well-known mitotic spindle poisons, not much is known about vindoline and catharanthine. Vindoline and catharanthine showed weak cytotoxicity, while vinblastine, vincristine, and the semisynthetic vindesine and vinorelbine revealed high cytotoxicity towards cancer cells. This may reflect a general biological principle of poisonous plants. Highly toxic compounds are not only active towards predators, but also towards plant tissues. Hence, plants need mechanisms to protect themselv…

Rituximab in refractory Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease.

2011

Introduction Vogt–Koyanagi–Harada (VKH) prognosis depends on early recognition and treatment; chronic disease may be developed when either delayed or inadequate treatment is performed, whereas other cases despite correct treatment are refractory to different drugs and also become chronic. We report a case of refractory VKH controlled with rituximab treatment. Case report A 41-year-old female with painful visual loss and headache was examined. (VA 0.4 in RE and hand movements (HM) in LE). Retinal examination demonstrated multiple serous retinal detachments in both eyes. High-dose oral steroids were started, followed by progressive tapering of prednisone. New acute anterior and posterior rela…

Controlling ground-state rotational dynamics of molecules by shaped femtosecond laser pulses

2004

We report controlled excitation of ground-state rotational wave packet by pulse-shaping technique. The experiment is conducted in nitrogen $({\mathrm{N}}_{2})$ at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. A femtosecond laser pulse produces rotational coherences in the vibronic ground state of ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ through an impulsive Raman process. The laser pulse is tailored using a spatial light modulator producing spectral phase modulation. Periodic phase steps are applied in order to control the excitation of specific rotational Raman transitions. The outcome is the modification of the relative excitation between odd and even rotational states which allows the control of the symmetry and…

Real-time acquisition of complex optical fields by binary amplitude modulation

2017

We describe, through simulations and experiments, a real-time wavefront acquisition technique using random binary amplitude masks and an iterative phase retrieval algorithm based on the Fresnel propagator. By using a digital micromirror device, it is possible to recover an unknown complex object by illuminating with this set of masks and simultaneously recording the resulting intensity patterns with a high-speed camera, making this technique suitable for dynamic applications.

Dynamic wavefront sensing and correction with low-cost twisted nematic spatial light modulators

2010

Off-the-shelf spatial light modulators (SLMs), like twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TNLCDs) used in projection systems, show some interesting features such as high spatial resolution, easy handling, wide availability, and low cost. We describe a compact adaptive optical system using just one TNLCD to measure and compensate optical aberrations. The current system operates at a frame rate of the order of 10 Hz with a four-level codification scheme. Wavefront estimation is performed through conventional Hartmann–Shack sensing architecture. The system has proved to work properly with a maximum rms aberration of 0. 76 μm and wavefront gradient of 50 rad/mm at a wavelength of 514 nm. The…
