Publisher Summary The neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are differentially expressed on the somato-dendritic surface of hippocampal neurons. This chapter demonstrates that various ions and drugs play a crucial role in modulating the activity of neuronal nAChRs. Considering the diversity of the neurotransmitter receptors and their binding sites and the diversity of substances, which can act simultaneously as a primary agonist of one receptor and an allosteric modulator of a different receptor, an enormous variety of combinatorial possibilities can be achieved in the brain giving rise to very complex neuronal networks. Fingolimod as a Treatment in Neurologic Disorders Beyond Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract Fingolimod is an approved treatment for relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (MS), and its properties in different pathways have raised interest in therapy research for other neurodegenerative diseases. Fingolimod is an agonist of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) receptors. Its main pharmacologic effect is immunomodulation by lymphocyte homing, thereby reducing the numbers of T and B cells in circulation. Because of the ubiquitous expression of S1P receptors, other effects have also been described. Background The hippocampus and its 5-hydroxytryptamine transmission plays an important role in depression related to its involvement in limbic circuit plasticity. Methods The analysis was made with bioluminescence resonance energy transfer, co-immunoprecipitation, in situ proximity ligation assay, binding assay, in cell western and the forced swim test. The possibility of extending the well known Gelfand–Naimark– Segal representation of *-algebras to certain Banach C*-modules is studied. Contemporary signal processing makes an extensive use of function spaces, always with the aim of getting a precise control on smoothness and decay properties of functions. In this chapter, we will discuss several classes of such function spaces that have found interesting applications, namely, mixed-norm spaces, amalgam spaces, modulation spaces, or Besov spaces. It turns out that all those spaces come in families indexed by one or more parameters, that specify, for instance, the local behavior or the asymptotic properties.
