Effects of Nylon 6,6 Nanofibrous Mats on Thermal Properties and Delamination Behavior of High Performance CFRP Laminates

2014

none 8 no Nylon 6,6 electrospun nanofibrous membranes interleaved in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) laminates have been proposed as a means to provide a higher threshold value to delamination on structural sites where composites are more prone to develop such failure. A model, highly crosslinked thus inherently brittle, epoxy matrix was selected for its high Young’s modulus and glass transition temperature exceeding 250 °C. The influence of the Nylon 6,6 nanofibres on the curing behaviour of the matrix and on the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of the cured resin was investigated. These properties were related to the features of the epoxy resin and of the resin impregnated…

Crystallization in charged two-component suspensions

2005

We report on the crystallization of colloidal crystals comprising of charged particles with different size ratio dispersed in thoroughly deionized water. Single components were characterized carefully and their nucleation behavior was investigated before the preparation of mixtures. Mixtures investigated at constant particle number densities showed body centred cubic structure, conductivity, and shear moduli comply with the assumption of a randomly substituted crystal. Most importantly, for the first time we obtain the dependence of the nucleation rate densities in dependence on the composition and (for one fixed composition) the particle number density. The process of nucleation in random …

Stiffer, Stronger and Centrosymmetrical Class of Pentamodal Mechanical Metamaterials

2019

Pentamode metamaterials have been used as a crucial element to achieve elastical unfeelability cloaking devices. They are seen as potentially fragile and not simple for integration in anisotropic structures due to a non-centrosymmetric crystalline structure. Here, we introduce a new class of pentamode metamaterial with centrosymmetry, which shows better performances regarding stiffness, toughness, stability and size dependence. The phonon band structure is calculated based on the finite element method, and the pentamodal properties are evaluated by analyzing the single band gap and the ratio of bulk and shear modulus. Recycled Polycarbonate Based Nanocomposites

2013

Post-consumer polycarbonate (RPC) blends with various amounts (5, 10, 30 wt. %) of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVAc) are investigated as potential nanocomposite matrices. At EVAc weight content of 10 wt.% maximum tensile strength σM and impact strength AI increase is observed in comparison to neat RPC. Addition of EVAc, however, reduces resistance to creep as well as decrease thermal stability of the investigated compositions. Addition of montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT), however, allows increase modulus of elasticity E and yield strength σY of the investigated RPC blend with 10 wt. % of EVAc. Besides it creep resistance and thermal resistance of the investigated system is increased to …

Static and dynamic elasticity of some thermotropic liquid-crystalline copolyesters

1997

Two series of thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyesters were studied in static and dynamic tensile deformation. Static loading generally does not lead to any peculiar phenomena: the stress-strain diagrams are linear or convex, except one copolyester fibre, the stress-strain diagram of which is concave at high temperatures. On the contrary, in dynamic loading the elasticity modulus increased during deformation for all the samples investigated. So it can be assumed that formation of a more rigid and stable structure takes place due to the dynamic deformation.

Creep and damage accumulation in orthotropic composites under cyclic loading

1998

Experimental results and theoretical prediction of the response of glassfiber-reinforced polyester under quasi-static, static (creep), and cyclic (fatigue) loading are presented. The nonlinear strain component at static loading and the strain amplitude rate at cyclic off-axis loading of an orthotropic composite are shown to follow the associated flow rule with a single-parameter quadratic potential function. The influence of fatigue damage on deformation is considerable due to the reduction in the elastic modulus of the composite and is apparently negligible with respect to its effect on the parameters of the creep kernel.

Linear Viscoelasticity of Liquid-Crystalline Polymers

2004

A linear (small-amplitude) periodic shear deformation of anisotropic viscoelastic liquids obeying the Akay–Leslie rheological model is considered. The frequency dependences of the real and imaginary components of the complex shear modulus and complex normal-stress coefficient are determined. A comparison between calculation results and test data on the shear flow of poly(γ-benzylglutamate) in m-cresol is carried out. It is stated that, if the material is characterized by some initial orientation, both components of the complex shear modulus contain a multiplier which depends on the degree of the initial orientation and increases the values of the components compared with those for an initia…

Long-term ISO 23936-2 sweet oil ageing of HNBR

2021

Abstract A hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) compound is subjected to ageing in a simulated oil and gas environment in accordance with ISO 23936-2 standard at two elevated temperatures (130 °C and 150 °C) for a period of up to 9 months. Shore D hardness, thermal expansion, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, compression and compression set (CS) measurements are made before and after the chemical exposure. The hardness, modulus at short times, degree of relaxation and CS increases while the coefficient of thermal expansion in HNBR tends to decrease with ageing time and temperature. Temperature is shown to impose a greater effect on th…

Relating morphology to nanoscale mechanical properties: from crystalline to mesomorphic iPP

2005

Abstract A nanoindentation technique using an atomic force microscope (AFM) was applied to characterize the mechanical behaviour of several isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples. The samples were solidified from the melt with a CCT (continuous cooling transformation) procedure spanning a wide range of cooling rates thanks to a fast quenching apparatus developed by the authors. The influence of instrumental parameters on the nanoscale mechanical properties (indentation depth, Young's modulus) shows that for modulus determination one has to rely on simpler methods of force curve analysis based on trace curve alone. Structure homogeneity up to the scale of macroscopic samples used to evaluate …
