Age-related differences in Achilles tendon properties and triceps surae muscle architecture in vivo
2012
This study examined the concurrent age-related differences in muscle and tendon structure and properties. Achilles tendon morphology and mechanical properties and triceps surae muscle architecture were measured from 100 subjects [33 young (24 ± 2 yr) and 67 old (75 ± 3 yr)]. Motion analysis-assisted ultrasonography was used to determine tendon stiffness, Young's modulus, and hysteresis during isometric ramp contractions. Ultrasonography was used to measure muscle architectural features and size and tendon cross-sectional area. Older participants had 17% lower ( P < 0.01) Achilles tendon stiffness and 32% lower ( P < 0.001) Young's modulus than young participants. Tendon cross-section…
Mechanical Properties of Human Patellar Tendon at the Hierarchical levels of Tendon and Fibril
2012
Tendons are strong hierarchical structures, but how tensile forces are transmitted between different levels remains incompletely understood. Collagen fibrils are thought to be primary determinants of whole tendon properties, and therefore we hypothesized that the whole human patellar tendon and its distinct collagen fibrils would display similar mechanical properties. Human patellar tendons ( n = 5) were mechanically tested in vivo by ultrasonography. Biopsies were obtained from each tendon, and individual collagen fibrils were dissected and tested mechanically by atomic force microscopy. The Young's modulus was 2.0 ± 0.5 GPa, and the toe region reached 3.3 ± 1.9% strain in whole patellar …
Determination of the modulus of elasticity of bone material by an acoustical approach at the forearm distinguishes women with and without vertebral f…
2002
The modulus of elasticity is a parameter characterizing fracture stability of bone independent of bone mineral density. Measurement of acoustical properties of the forearm by determination of the resonant frequency of the ulna in longitudinal direction as a function of sound transmission velocity after adjustment of the measuring result by ulna length yields information about the modulus of elasticity. It was the aim of this study to investigate whether this parameter may distinguish between subjects with and without vertebral fractures independent of bone mineral density. Fifty females (61.1 +/- 9.1 years) were enrolled into the study, 25 with, and 25 age-matched without prevalent osteopor…
Mappings of finite distortion: Capacity and modulus inequalities
2006
We establish capacity and modulus inequalities for mappings of finite distortion under minimal regularity assumptions.
Properties of mixed colloidal crystals
2007
We prepared colloidal crystals from aqueous suspensions of spherical, charged polystyrene spheres under deionised conditions. Using a home-built multipurpose light scattering apparatus we measured the static structure factor, the static shear modulus and the intermediate scattering function. In addition we also monitored also the conductivity as a function of the composition and the particle number density. For the mixture investigated the data are well described assuming the formation of randomly substituted body-centered-cubic crystals.
On Functions of Integrable Mean Oscillation
2005
Given we denote by the modulus of mean oscillation given by where is an arc of , stands for the normalized length of , and . Similarly we denote by the modulus of harmonic oscillation given by where and stand for the Poisson kernel and the Poisson integral of respectively. It is shown that, for each , there exists such that
Study on Experimental Determination of the Elasticity Modulus of Casted Basalt
2020
Basalt is a material available in big quantities in nature. It has a low price and can be used in various domains. It can be relatively easily extracted from natural deposits and processed by means of melting. Melted and recrystallized basalt has demonstrated promising behavior with regards of its use in manufacturing, as reported in the literature. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the determination of the modulus of elasticity of molten and recrystallized basalt by the method of resistive electrical tensometry and to validate the result and by simulation using finite elements method. Testing methodology, experimental test, data records, data processing and result…
Asphalt mixtures modified with basalt fibres for surface courses
2018
Abstract This paper shows the results of an experimental study concerning the effect of introduction of basalt fibres in asphalt mixtures for surface course, mainly with regard to those to be used in urban areas, for dedicated bus lanes. Surface layers, where tire-pavement interactions occur, have to provide different properties such as high friction (very important for users’ safety), stability, resistance to meteorological agents, and contribution to the overall pavement performances. Considering that basalt fibres provide considerable physical and mechanical properties and above all high abrasion resistance, scope of the study is to evaluate the effects of these fibres on mixtures proper…

Semi-IPN's of different composition, based on linear poly(methyl vinyl ether) (PVME) and crosslinked polystyrene are studied using stress and birefringence measurements in simple elongation. From quasistatic stress-strain experiments at constant T(experiment)-Tg, it can be deduced that the stress results only from the deformation of the polystyrene network, while the PVME chains do not contribute to the macroscopic stress. The concentration dependence of the network modulus is adequately described by the rubber elastic theories
Structural and functional characterization of enamel pigmentation in shrews.
2013
Pigmented tooth enamel occurs in several vertebrate clades, ranging from mammals to fish. Although an iron compound is associated with this orange to red colored pigmentation, its chemical and structural organization within the enamel is unknown. To determine the nature of the iron compound, we investigated heavily pigmented teeth of the northern short-tailed shrew Blarina brevicauda using combined characterization techniques such as scanning and transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We found that the pigmentation of the enamel with an iron content of around 8wt% results from a close to amorphous magnetite phase deposited around the nm-sized enamel crystals. Fu…
