Conditional reasoning by mental models: chronometric and developmental evidence

The aim of this article is to verify two predictions resulting from the mental models theory of conditional reasoning. First, the denial of antecedent (DA) and modus tollens (MT) inferences should take longer to verify than modus ponens (MP) and affirmation of consequent (AC) because the former require subjects to flesh out the initial model whereas the latter do not. Il presente lavoro di ricerca mira ad approfondire e arricchire, mediante nuove acquisizioni, lo studio in merito alle opere pittoriche di committenza gesuitica custodite presso le fondazioni palermitane dell’Ordine: chiesa del Gesù a Casa Professa, Collegio Massimo dei Gesuiti, chiesa di San Stanislao Kostka e chiesa di San Francesco Saverio. A queste si aggiungono i dipinti di committenza della Compagnia trasferiti presso altre sedi. Le molteplici convenzioni che sono state firmate tra la Santa Sede e gli Stati dello scacchiere latinoamericano hanno spesso rappresentato l’evoluzione verso concordati fondati non più sul confessionismo statale, ma sul riconoscimento della libertas Ecclesiae, ossia della sua autonomia e indipendenza nell’adempimento della propria missione specifica, e sulla libertà cultuale riconosciuta a tutti i cittadini e alle loro organizzazioni confessionali. Si rivela di particolare interesse analizzare la specificità di questi accordi in termini di dinamiche diplomatiche, nella tipicità dei sistemi delle relazioni bilaterali, nonché delle politiche religiose dal XIX al XXI secolo.
Generalized probabilistic modus ponens

Modus ponens (from A and “if A then C” infer C) is one of the most basic inference rules. The probabilistic modus ponens allows for managing uncertainty by transmitting assigned uncertainties from the premises to the conclusion (i.e., from P(A) and P(C|A) infer P(C)). In this paper, we generalize the probabilistic modus ponens by replacing A by the conditional event A|H. The resulting inference rule involves iterated conditionals (formalized by conditional random quantities) and propagates previsions from the premises to the conclusion. The Patres ecclesiae?s works were a frequent topic of discussion at the time in which many humanists stood against the decadent medieval scholastics. That Juan Luis Vives was part of this tradition is demonstrated in his commentaries on Saint Augustine works. Despite its pedagogical function, the scholia of the Valencian author became quite subjective. In this sense, his ecdotic work or, specially, his «criticisms and censures» can be mentioned. Here, Vives strongly disapproves of the intense political and intellectual turmoil of his epoch. Tämä tutkielma on deskriptiivis-kontrastiivinen tutkimus suomen ja ranskan välillä. Tarkoituksena oli etsiä arvelemisen ilmaisimet Toivo Pekkasen kahdesta teoksesta ja niiden ranskannoksista. Arvelevat väitteet edustavat episteemistä modaliteettia, joka antaa ilmaukselle merkityksen ’mahdollinen’ tai ’todennäköinen’. Vertailun avulla olen pyrkinyt löytämään ne lingvistiset keinot, joilla ranskassa ilmaistaan episteemistä modaliteettia.
