Let Me Hack It: Teachers’ Perceptions About ‘Making’ in Education
2020
Making in education is an emergent practice focusing on learners as creators of things in a collaborative fashion while promoting knowledge construction through technology, design, and creative self-expression. Teachers’ (n=33) opinions about making were studied using an online questionnaire after they had attended an online course for professional development about making in education. The results suggest that there exists a group of educators who consider making as a promising approach in education and want to promote its use in schools. peerReviewed
International Conference for Mathematical Modeling and Optimization in Mechanics : book of abstracts : University of Jyväskylä, March 6-7, 2014
2014
This book of abstracts presents materials of the International Conference for Mathematical Modeling and Optimization in Mechanics (MMOM 2014) 6-7 March 2014, Jyväskylä, Finland. This event is dedicated to Professor Nikolay Banichuk in occasion of his 70th anniversary. It is aimed to present the latest results of leading scientists in mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, and optimization theory and to discuss the state of the art and open problems in the field. The book is divided in five sections: 1. Mathematical Modelling of Complex Systems 2. Stability Analysis and Vibration 3. Optimization 4. Methods of Numerical Analysis 5. Shape Optimization
Modelling Without a Modelling Language
2018
Developments in computer hardware and programming languages, in this case C++, have made it feasible to write models of concurrent systems under verification in the programming language, instead of some established modelling language such as Promela. While this does not reduce the usefulness of modelling languages, it offers new possibilities that may be advantageous, for instance, when teaching state space ideas to newcomers or when experimenting with new scientific ideas. In earlier work, we were able to express everything else fairly naturally in C++, except the set of transitions. The present study uses C++ lambda functions to represent naturally transitions that consist of a tail state…

Increasing the drying efficiency of cylinder drying
2011
This PhD Thesis concentrates on paper drying: first on the drying rate in a cylinder covered with fabric, enhanced using hot air impingement through the fabric, and its potential effects on paper quality, and second, on the heat transfer rate from hot steam to paper through the cylinder shell. Cylinder drying is a drying method where a heated surface in contact with paper causes water removal from the latter by evaporation. Impingement through the fabric of hot air has been suggested to cause increase in the water removal and drying of paper. Increase in the drying rate by impingement of hot air was confirmed by laboratory tests and by simulations. In laboratory tests the increase in the dr…
