Cyclooxygenase-1/2 (COX-1/COX-2) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) inhibitors of the 6,7-diaryl-2,3-1H-dihydropyrrolizine type

A series of 6,7-diaryl-2,3-1H-dihydropyrrolizines was prepared as COX-1/COX-2 and 5-LOX inhibitors. The inhibition of COX-1 was evaluated using intact bovine platelets as the enzyme source, whereas LPS-stimulated human monocytes served as the enzyme source for inducible COX-2. The determination of arachidonic metabolites was performed by HPLC for COX-1 and RIA for COX-2. The balance between COX-1/COX-2 and 5-LOX inhibition can be shifted by modifying the substitution pattern of the phenyl moiety at the 6- and 7-position of the pyrrolizine nucleus. Structure-activity relationships are discussed.
COX-1/COX-2 inhibitors based on the methanone moiety

This paper focuses on the synthesis and the in vitro testing of dual COX-1/COX-2 inhibitors. Starting from structures of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) the diaryl methanone element was chosen as a lead. Modifications were carried out on this scaffold to obtain potent inhibitors of the COX enzymes. The N-(2-aroylphenyl)sulphonamides and -amides were studied in detail, and to consolidate the data evaluated the corresponding 3- and 4-regioisomers were also investigated. The potency and the enzyme selectivity were varied by structural modifications of the lead.

Many-body Green's function theory of electrons and nuclei beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation

The method of many-body Green's functions is developed for arbitrary systems of electrons and nuclei starting from the full (beyond Born-Oppenheimer) Hamiltonian of Coulomb interactions and kinetic energies. The theory presented here resolves the problems arising from the translational and rotational invariance of this Hamiltonian that afflict the existing many-body Green's function theories. We derive a coupled set of exact equations for the electronic and nuclear Green's functions and provide a systematic way to approximately compute the properties of arbitrary many-body systems of electrons and nuclei beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. [EN] A series of boronic acid derived salicylidenehydrazone (BASHY) complexes was prepared and photophysically characterized. The dye platform can be modified by (a) electronic tuning along the cyanine-type axis via modification of the donor-acceptor pair and (b) functional tuning via the boronic acid residue. On the one hand, approach (a) allows the control of photophysical parameters such as Stokes shift, emission color, and two-photon absorption (2PA) cross section. The resulting dyes show emission light-up behavior in nonpolar media and are characterized by high fluorescence quantum yields (ca. 0.5-0.7) and brightness (ca. 35000-40000 M-1 cm(-1)). Abstract The capability of L-band radiometry to monitor surface soil moisture (SM) at global scale has been analyzed in numerous studies, mostly in the framework of the ESA SMOS and NASA SMAP missions. To retrieve SM from L-band radiometric observations, two significant effects have to be accounted for, namely soil roughness and vegetation optical depth. After more than 8 years in orbit the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite is still in good health and several algorithms for improving its spatial resolution have been proposed and validated in a variety of catchments. However, none of them has yet been applied at the global scale. In this article we present: i) a review of the latest SMOS-BEC downscaling algorithm, which allows for its global application using an adaptive moving window and ii) a thorough validation of the resulting maps over two in-situ networks: REMEDHUS in Spain and OzNet in Australia. Effect of Water on the Mechanical Behaviour of Extruded Flat Bread

Abstract The effect of water on the mechanical properties of extruded breads was studied, at room temperature. As the moisture content was increased from 6 to 9% moisture, the resistance to fracture (compression tests) or rupture (tensile tests) was improved. Above this moisture range, plasticisation by water was the dominant phenomenon. The brittle to ductile transition was observed to occur within a moisture content range from 9 to 13·7% (w/w). The influence of water on the crispness of extruded bread, evaluated with sensory evaluation, is also described.

Abstract The Zn 2+ and Cd 2+ complexing properties of four ligands containing a 4,4′-substituted biphenyl moiety are described. Ligands 1 and 3 , containing only one 1-aza-18-crown-6 cavity, lead to selective complexation of Cd 2+ versus Zn 2+ . Ligand 4 , with two crown cavities linked to a tetramethylbenzidine unit, is able to form 1:1 complexes with Zn 2+ and Cd 2+ , showing a higher complexing constant with Zn 2+ than with Cd 2+ , probably due to enthalpic factors. Several complementary experiments suggest that the 1:1 complexes formed by ligand 4 involve both crown cavities acting together to give rise to clamp structures.
