Microphase separation upon crystallization of small amphiphilic molecules: ‘low’ temperature form II of sodium benzoate (E 211)
2016
A so far unknown low temperature polymorph (form II crystallized at 350 °C) of the common food preservative sodium benzoate (NaBz; E 211) could be crystallized by annealing (7 days) of the poorly crystalline technical material. Its crystal structure was solved by indexing a tiny single crystal by electron diffraction followed by structure solution and refinement applying powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). The new polymorph shows many structural similarities to form I (crystallized at 420 °C). Both form I and II are the result of a microphase separation: the structures consist of pseudo-hexagonal packings of rod-shaped micelles where the core consists of sodium cations being coordinated by the…
Construction of green nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts via non-covalent surface decoration of multi-walled carbon nanotubes with Pd(II) complex…
2017
Abstract Green nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts were prepared via a bottom-up strategy. Designed ligands were synthesized joining covalently an electrondeficient pyrimidine residue and a scorpiand azamacrocycle. The desired molecular properties were easily transferred to nanostructured materials in two steps: first, exploiting their spontaneous chemisorption onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via the pyrimidinic moiety in water at room temperature, then, taking advantage of the easy coordination of Pd(II) to the azamacrocycle in the same conditions. An evenly distribution of catalytic centres was obtained on the MWCNTs surface. Catalytic properties of these materials were ass…

Influence of spatial arrangements of π-spacer and acceptor of phenothiazine based dyes on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells
2013
Abstract Three phenothiazine based organic dyes PTA , PDTA and PTDA with D– π –A, π –D– π –A and A– π –D– π –A frameworks were designed and synthesized for the dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Phenothiazine with octyloxyphenyl moiety acts as donor while thiophene and cyanoacetic acid units act as a π -spacer and an acceptor, respectively. The effects of the molecular structures of the dyes on the performance of the DSSCs were investigated systematically along with their photophysical and photoelectrochemical properties. The dye PTDA with A– π –D– π –A framework exhibited a better light harvesting capacity and an effective electron extraction pathway from the electron donor to the TiO 2 s…
Magnetic polyoxometalates: anisotropic exchange interactions in the moiety of [(NaOH2)Co3(H2O)(P2W15O56)2]17-.
2005
The magnetic exchange interactions in a C0(3)(11) moiety encapsulated in Na(17) [(NaOH(2))Co(3)(H(2)O)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)] (NaCo(3)) were studied by a combination of magnetic measurements (magnetic susceptibility and low-temperature magnetization), with a detailed Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) investigation. The novel structure of the salt was determined by X-ray crystallography. The ferromagnetic Co(3)O(14) triangular cluster core consists of three octahedrally oxo-coordinated Co(II) ions sharing edges. According to the single-ion anisotropy and spin-orbit coupling usually assumed for octahedral Co(II) ions, the appropiate exchange Hamiltonian to describe the ground-state properties o…
Mössbauer spectroscopic studies on compounds containing tin-cadmium and tin-zinc bonds
1975
The Mossbauer parameters of compounds Ph3Sn MCl · TMED (M = Cd, Zn; TMED = N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine), (Ph3Sn)2CdL2 (L2 = TMED, 2,2′-bipyridine and o-phenanthroline) and (Ph3Sn)2 Zn · TMED have been determined and are discussed in connection with Mossbauer data concerning Ph3SnIV derivatives with other Sn-metal bonds. The isomer shift values suggest a high s character in SnCd and SnZn bonds resulting in deviations from regular tetrahedral environments around tin. Experimental quadrupole splittings and calculated partial quadrupole splitting values indicate reduced donor abilities towards the tin atom of an individual Ph3SnIV moiety by Cd-and Zn(Ph3Sn)1−nClnL2 (i.e., the remaini…
Tandem β-Boration/Arylation of α,β-Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds by Using a Single Palladium Complex To Catalyse Both Steps
2010
Diphenyl(3-methyl-2-indolyl)phosphine (C(9)H(8)NPPh(2), 1) gives stable dimeric palladium(II) complexes that contain the phosphine in P,N-bridging coordination mode. On treating 1 with [Pd(O(2)CCH(3))(2)], the new complexes [Pd(mu-C(9)H(7)NPPh(2))(NCCH(3))](2) (2) or [Pd(mu-C(9)H(7)NPPh(2))(mu-O(2)CCH(3))](2) (3) were isolated, depending on the solvent used, acetonitrile or toluene, respectively. Further reaction of 3 with the ammonium salt of 1 led to the substitution of one carboxylate ligand to afford [Pd(mu-C(9)H(7)NPPh(2))(3)(mu-O(2)CCH(3))] (4), in which the bimetallic unit is bonded by three C(9)H(7)NPPh(2)(-) moieties and one carboxylate group. Using this methodology, [Pd(2)(mu-C(6)…
ChemInform Abstract: Indirect Regioselective Heteroarylation of Indoles Through a Friedel-Crafts Reaction with (E)-1,4-Diaryl-2-buten-1,4-diones.
2010
Abstract A two-step synthesis of 3-heteroaryl indoles has been developed. The first step of the sequence involves a Friedel–Crafts alkylation of indoles with 1,4-diaryl-2-buten-1,4-diones to give the corresponding indoles bearing a 1,4-dicarbonyl moiety. The reaction is catalyzed by InCl 3 and takes place with good yields. Cyclization of the diones under different Paal–Knorr conditions allows to prepare indoles substituted at the C3 position with 3-furanyl, 3-pyrrolyl- and 3-thienyl moieties.
Semiempirical calculations on the interaction between dimethyltin(IV) and DNA model system
1999
Abstract The interaction between a dinucleotide triphosphate duplex (DD), mimicking the DNA molecule, and the dimethyltin(IV) cation is studied by the semiempirical PM3 method. The results show that the interaction can occur involving the tin atom and the electron-donor centres of DD, requiring in some cases the presence of water molecules. In particular, the binding of the dimethyltin(IV) moiety with two adjacent phosphate oxygen atoms is allowed by the presence of water molecules coordinating to the tin atom. In this case the tin environment shows a geometry in agreement with 119 Sn Mossbauer and X-ray data.
Installation of Amine Moieties into a Polycyclic Anodic Product Derived from 2,4-Dimethylphenol
2011
When 2,4-dimethylphenol is anodically treated, a dehydrotetramer with four contiguous stereocentres is readily obtained on a multi-gram scale. The substitution of a 2,4-dimethyl-phenoxy fragment by several amines was demonstrated, and the best results were obtained with primary amines. Optically pure α-chiral aliphatic amines yield diastereomeric mixtures that can be separated in most cases. The basic amine causes a partial hemiketal-opening of the bisbenzofuran moiety leading to an equilibrium within an α,β-unsaturated cyclohexenone. This dynamic behaviour occurs on the time scale of NMR spectroscopy and is also found by X-ray analysis providing a consistent picture.
