Coronectomy - An alternative approach to remove impacted teeth in oncological patients.

2018

Background Coronectomy involves the section of the tooth crown leaving the roots in the socket. Possibility of inferior alveolar nerve injury and mandibular fracture are the main indications for this approach. Herein, we describe a case series of coronectomy to highlight its indication in normal and oncological patients. Material and methods A total of 9 patients were submitted to coronectomy, 6 of them were oncological. Three patients were evaluated before head and neck radiotherapy (HNRT), 2 after HNRT and 1 before bone marrow transplantation. Results Mean age of the patients was 49 years, most of them male (n=7). Lower third molars were the main teeth that received this procedure, and al…

Comparative split-mouth study of the anesthetic efficacy of 4% articaine versus 0.5% bupivacaine in impacted mandibular third molar extraction

2013

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of articaine at 4% (epinephrine 1:100,000) with bupivacaine at 0.5% (epinephrine 1:200,000) for surgical extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. Study Design: This was a randomized, double blind, split-mouth, clinical trial. Thirty-six patients took part and underwent extraction of 72 lower third molars. The variables studied were: anesthetic latency time, intra-operative bleeding, anesthetic quality, hemodynamic changes during the surgical intervention, anesthetic duration in the soft tissues, post-operative analgesia and post-operative pain at 2, 6, 12 and 24 hours using a visual analogue scale, as well as a…

Growth kinetics and characterization of human dental pulp stem cells: Comparison between third molar and first premolar teeth

2015

Background Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) play an important role in tissue regeneration. This study compares the growth kinetics and characterization of third molar and first premolar human DPSCs. Material and Methods Dental pulp tissues were isolated from human first premolar and third molar teeth and were digested by treating them with collagenase type I. Single-cell suspensions from each dental pulp were seeded in T25 culture flasks and the media were replaced every 3 days until 70% confluence. The cells were enumerated to determine the population doubling time (PDT). Cells were characterized using flow cytometry, RT-PCR and osteogenic medium for differentiation of DPSCs. Karyotyping ass…

Stress distribution of complete-arch implant-supported prostheses reinforced with silica-nylon mesh

2019

Made available in DSpace on 2020-12-12T01:20:51Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-01-01 Background: This study evaluated the presence of a silica-nylon mesh and two cantilever lengths on the biomechanical behavior of complete-arch implant-supported prostheses. Material and Methods: Twenty-four (24) complete mandibular arch implant-supported prostheses were divided into 4 groups according to the presence of reinforcing mesh (with or without) and the cantilever length (molar-15 mm or premolar-5 mm). The specimens were submitted to strain gauge analysis (30-kgf, 10 s) at different points (molar and premolar). Three-dimensional models were created based on the in vitro spec…

Optical magnification has no benefits on the detection of occlusal caries lesions in permanent molars using different visual scoring systems: An in v…

2020

Background Some studies have addressed the influence of optical magnification on the detection of caries lesions using a visual scoring system. However, there is a lack of research related to the use of the CAST and ADA-CCS visual scoring systems. In addition, the reliability and accuracy of ADA-CCS index in permanent teeth were not studied yet. So, the aim of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the influence of different levels of optical magnification on the detection of occlusal caries lesions in permanent molars using three visual scoring systems. Material and Methods One occlusal site per tooth was analyzed in 120 extracted permanent molars. Two trained examiners inspected the teeth …

Effect of two whitening agents on the color of composite dental restorations

2018

Background To evaluate color changes to composite resins used to restore extracted teeth compared with composite discs after whitening with two agents: hydrogen peroxide (HP) and carbamide peroxide (CP). Material and methods Ten human molars with class V vestibular and palatine cavity preparation obturated with Vita hybrid nanocomposite were hemisected to obtain 20 specimens assigned randomly to two groups: O1 and O2. Twenty composite discs were divided into two groups: D1 and D2. The groups O1 and D1 were treated with 16% CP, while groups =2 and D2 were treated with 37.5 % HP. Chromaticity coordinates L*, a* and b* were registered using a spectrophotometer. Results Statistically significan…

Morphological analysis and immunohistochemical expression in restorations with self-adhesive resin: A randomized split-mouth design-controlled study.

2021

Background To evaluate the morphology and immunohistochemical expression of MMP-9, TIMP-3, COL-I, TNF-alfa and COX-2 in the dentinopulp complex of restorations with self adhesive composite (Vertise Flow/Kerr) compared with conventional resin composite with self-etching adhesive (Filtek Z250/3M ESPE and Clearfil SE Bond/Kuraray-Noritake). Material and Methods A randomized, controlled, double-blind, split-mouth, two-arm clinical trial was conducted. Twenty-seven volunteers with third molars indicated for extraction received two deep class I restorations, one with each material. The morphology and immunohistochemical expression were measured at 15 days after the restorative procesures. The dat…

Partial molar volumes and compressibilities of alkyltrimethylammonium bromides

1990

Density and ultrasound measurements were performed for dodecyl- and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide at 15, 25 and 35°C and for hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide at 25, 35 and 45°C over a wide concentration region. From these and previously reported data, partial molar volumes and isentropic and isothermal compressibilities were derived as a function of the surfactant concentration. It is shown that by increasing the surfactant concentration the apparent molar volumes and compressibilities increase according to the expected behavior of surfactant solutions. However, anomalies are displayed in plots of apparent molar compressibility of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide and of the speed…
