Charged supramolecular assemblies of surfactant molecules in gas phase
2015
The aim of this review is to critically analyze recent literature on charged supramolecular assemblies formed by surfactant molecules in gas phase. Apart our specific interest on this research area, the stimuli to undertake the task arise from the widespread theoretical and applicative benefits emerging from a comprehensive view of this topic. In fact, the study of the formation, stability, and physicochemical peculiarities of non-covalent assemblies of surfactant molecules in gas phase allows to unveil interesting aspects such as the role of attractive, repulsive, and steric intermolecular interactions as driving force of supramolecular organization in absence of interactions with surround…
Syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of metal-organic hybrid materials of Mn(II)/Co(II): three-fold interpenetrated alpha-polonium-…
2014
Three new 1,4-phenylenediacrylate bridged Mn(II) and Co(II) complexes of molecular formulas {[Mn2(ppda)(phen)4(H2O)2](ppda)2(H2O)} (1), {[Co(ppda)- (dpyo)(H2O)3]·4(H2O)}n (2), and {[Co(ppda)(bpe)]·(0.5H2O)}n (3) [ppda = 1,4- phenylenediacrylate; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; dpyo = 4,4′-dipyridyl N,N′-dioxide; bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, and low-temperature magnetic measurements. The structural determination reveals that complex 1 is a discrete dinuclear species, 2 is a 1D polymeric chain, while 3 is a three-fold interpenetrated α-polonium network. Hydrogen-bonding interact…

Supramolecular assembly using helical peptides
1997
Abstract We investigated supramolecular assemblies of various hydrophobic helical peptides. The assemblies were formed at the air/water interface or in aqueous medium. The hexadecapeptide, Boc-(Ala-Aib)8-OMe (BA16M), was reported to take α-helical structure by X-ray analysis. Several derivatives were prepared, which have the repeating sequence of Ala-Aib, Lys(Z)-Aib or Leu-Aib, or have the terminal chemically modified. CD spectra of the peptides indicated helical conformation in ethanol solution. The surface pressure-area isotherms of the peptide monolayers showed an inflection at the surface area corresponding to the cross section along the helix axis, and the monolayers were collapsed by …

Determination of association constants towards carbon nanotubes
2015
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are one of the most promising nanomaterials and their supramolecular chemistry has attracted a lot of attention. However, despite well over a decade of research, there is no standard method for the quantification of their noncovalent chemistry in solution/suspension. Here, we describe a simple procedure for the determination of association constants (Ka) between soluble molecules and insoluble and heterogeneous carbon nanotube samples. To test the scope of the method, we report binding constants between five different hosts and two types of SWNTs in four solvents. We have determined numeric values of Ka in the range of 1–104 M−1. Solvent effects as wel…
Studies on supramolecular gel formation using DOSY NMR
2015
Herein, we present the results obtained from our studies on supramolecular self-assembly and molecular mobility of low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) in organic solvents using pulsed field gradient (PFG) diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) NMR. A series of concentration-dependent DOSY NMR experiments were performed on selected LMWGs to determine the critical gelation concentration (CGC) as well as to understand the behaviour of the gelator molecules in the gel state. In addition, variable-temperature DOSY NMR experiments were performed to determine the gel-to-sol transition. The PFG NMR experiments performed as a function of gradient strength were further analyzed using monoexponential…
Recent advances in steroidal supramolecular gels
2020
During the last decade or two the interest towards small molecules capable of self-assembly leading to gelation has increased intensively. The investigation of these supramolecular gels aims not only at understanding the fundamental processes underlying gel formation but also at development of new materials with a myriad of applications. Steroids are widely-spread natural products with a large and rigid steroidal nucleus combined with derivatizable functional groups leading to an adjustable polarity profile, which makes them attractive building blocks when designing novel low molecular weight gelators. Due to their unique properties, steroid-based supramolecular gels may find use in applica…
Electrochemical synthesis on boron-doped diamond
2012
Abstract Boron-doped diamond (BDD) is a novel and innovative electrode material. In protic media and particular aqueous electrolytes BDD exhibits a large over potential for the evolution of molecular hydrogen and oxygen. The large chemical window allows a variety of electrochemical conversions to be conducted. The anodic process treatment generates oxyl species directly which are known to be extremely reactive. Usually, the electrochemical mineralization of the organic components in the electrolyte occurs. However, with control of the reactivity of these intermediates the use in electroorganic synthesis can be realized. Until today mostly anodic conversions have been studied at BDD. Since h…
Malonic acid: A multi-modal bridging ligand for new architectures and properties on molecule-based magnets
2003
Abstract In this work, we show how the design of one-, two- and three-dimensional materials can strongly benefit from the use of crystal engineering techniques, which can give rise to structures of different shapes, and how these differences can give rise to different properties. We will focus on the networks constructed by assembling malonate ligands and metal centres. The idea of using malonate (dianion of propanedioic acid, H 2 mal) is that they can give rise to different coordination modes with the metal ions bind. Extended magnetic networks of dimensionalities 1 (1D), 2 (2D) and 3 (3D) can be chemically constructed from malonato-bridged metallic complexes. These coordination polymers b…
