ChemInform Abstract: Asymmetric Synthesis of Bicyclic Amino Acid Derivatives by Aza-Diels- Alder Reactions in Aqueous Solution.

Derivatives 7–10 and 13–16 of methyl and ethyl 2-azabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-3-carboxylates are synthesized by Aza-Diels-Alder reactions of chiral iminium ions, formed in situ from glyoxylic acid and chiral amines, with cyclopentadiene. Whereas the heterodienophiles derived from phenylglycinol and esters of sterically more demanding amino acids fail to undergo asymmetric cycloadditions, with alanine methyl ester and (R)-1-phenylethylamine hydrochoride the cycloadducts are formed in yields of 15 and 52%, respectively, reaching de values of up to 90:10 for the exo isomers.

Molecular self-assembly on an insulating surface: interplay between substrate templating and intermolecular interactions

We report on molecular self-assembly of biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (BPDCA) on CaCO3(10 (1) over bar4) under ultra-high vacuum conditions. Two-dimensional, ordered islands are obtained upon deposition at room temperature, coexisting with a streaky structure that is ascribed to individual, mobile molecules forming a two-dimensional gas-like phase. High-resolution non-contact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) images of the molecular islands reveal an ordered inner structure that is dominated by rows of molecules aligned side by side running along the [(42) over bar 61] crystallographic direction. Molecular modeling studies of interactions between styrene–butadiene latex and sodium polyacrylate polymer surface

Abstract The interaction between two important paper coating ingredients, sodium polyacrylate polymer dispersing agent and styrene–butadiene latex binder, was studied using classical force field and quantum chemical methods. The objective was to understand the adsorption of styrene–butadiene latex on the sodium polyacrylate polymer model surfaces at 300 K using molecular dynamics simulations. IR-spectroscopic studies of Zymomonas mobilis and levan precipitate

Abstract The mid-infrared (mid-IR) absorption spectra of Zymomonas mobilis 113 “S” bacterial biomass grown in sucrose or glucose medium, and levan precipitate in the fingerprint region were studied. IR-qualitative and quantitative analyses were carried out. The principal component concentration changes in Z. mobilis biomass at different growth phases showed that protein concentration was higher in case of glucose-based medium, but the total carbohydrate concentration was higher if grown in sucrose-based medium. Solvothermal synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of homometallic Co(II) and Cu(II) chains with double di(4-pyridyl)sulfide as bridges

Abstract Two new coordination polymers {[Co(μ-4,4′-dps)2(H2O)2](NO3)2·2(4,4′-dps)·4H2O}n (1) and {[Cu(μ-4,4′-dps)2(H2O)2](NO3)2·2H2O}n (2) [4,4′-dps = di(4-pyridyl)sulfide] have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions between the nitrate salts of cobalt(II) (1) and copper(II) (2) and the 4,4′-dps molecule. Compounds 1 and 2 have been characterized by elemental analysis, thermal analysis (TG/DTA), vibrational spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and variable-temperature magnetic measurements. Earlier studies established that dimethyldioxirane (1a) reacts with sulfides 2 in two consecutive concerted electrophilic oxygen-transfer steps to give first sulfoxides 3 and then sulfones 4. The same sequential electrophilic oxidation model was assumed for the reaction of sulfides 2 with the strongly electrophilic methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane (1b). In this paper we report on a systematic and general study on the mechanism of the reaction of simple sulfides 2 with DMDO (1a) and TFDO (1b) which provides clear evidence for the involvement of hypervalent sulfur species in the oxidation process. Monte Carlo methods for polymer chains in two - dimensional geometries (polymers at surfaces and interfaces)

Coarse-grained models of polymers at interfaces can be defined such that their treatment by Monte Carlo simulation is most convenient and efficient for the problem at hand. This simulation strategy is briefly illustrated with three examples: (1) The orientational ordering of rigid rod-like polymers grafted to a surface, where “table methods” can be used, applying a fine discretization of the angles describing rod orientation. (2) Surface enrichment of one species in a polymer blend is treated by a semi-grand-canonical technique. Chain linear dimensions in the surface-enriched layer of polymer mixtures

We calculate the mean-square end-to-end distances and mean-square gyration radii using the bond fluctuation model for a binary polymer blend in the presence of a wall by Monte Carlo simulation. In the bulk, the size of the minority, low-concentration polymer species is compressed compared to the majority one. In the vicinity of the wall, where the minority polymer concentration is enriched due to attraction from the wall, the dimensions of the two types of polymers are approximately equal and are essentially the same as in an athermal polymer melt. Thus, the geometric constraint is more important to the structure of the polymers than the polymer-polymer and polymer-wall interactions.

Carbohydrates are inexpensive natural products. Although they contain numerous functional groups and stereogenic centers in one molecule, carbohydrates were recognized as stereodifferentiating auxiliaries much later than other classes of natural products as for example amino acids or terpenes. Apart from their polyfunctional nature carbohydrates are characterized by the anomeric and exo-anomeric effects which have distinct influence of the spatial orientation of substituents linked to the anomeric position. Four new complexes [MnII(L1OO)(H2O)][ClO4]·2H2O (1), [ZnII(L1OO)][ClO4]·2H2O (2), [CuII(L3OO)][CF3SO3]·H2O (3), and [ZnII(L3OO)][ClO4] (4) (L1OO– = 3-[(2-(pyridine-2-yl)ethyl){2-(pyridine-2-yl)methyl}amino]propionate; L3OO– = 3-[(2-(pyridine-2-yl)ethyl){(dimethylamino)ethyl}amino]propionate) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy.
