Photoblinking and photobleaching of rylene diimide dyes.

We investigate photoblinking and photobleaching of perylene diimide (PDI) and its higher homologue terrylene diimide (TDI). Single molecule fluorescence trajectories of the dye molecules embedded in PMMA under ambient conditions exhibit "on"-"off" blinking in the time range from ms to s. Due to the limited statistics of individual trajectories we construct ensemble distributions of "on" and "off" times which follow power laws with similar power law coefficients (m(on) ≈ 1.18, m(off) ≈ 1.31). Population analysis of pair densities. A study on cyclic systems

Abstract Pair population analysis seems a reliable method for evaluating atomic valency states and bond orders from the MO wavefunction of molecular systems. A test on some cyclic organic systems was performed. The results confirm the capability of the method to provide a correct description of the molecules in terms of simple VB approach.

1H, 13C, and 15N NMR spectra show that an ortho-C(=O)X group present in the molecules of N-salicylideneanthranilamide (X = NH2), methyl N-salicylideneanthranilate (X = OCH3), N-salicylidene-o-aminoacetophenone (X = CH3), and their benzo analogues have only a minor effect on the tautomeric OH/NH-equilibrium in solution. Only two of three possible tautomers were detected. Lability of the absent form was proved by theoretical calculations. Calculated energies show that the enolimino form (OH) is less stable than the enaminone (NH) form only for dibenzo-annulated N-salicylideneanilines. Sponges [phylum Porifera] form the basis of the metazoan kingdom and represent the evolutionary earliest phylum still extant. Hence, as living fossils, they are the taxon closest related to the hypothetical ancestor of all Metazoa, the Urmetazoa. Until recently, it was still unclear whether sponges are provided with a defined body plan. Only after the cloning, expression and functional studies of characteristic metazoan genes, could it be demonstrated that these animals comprise the structural elements which allow the sponge cells to organize themselves according to a body plan. Gene delivery agents possessing antiradical activity: self-assembling cationic amphiphilic 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives

Seventeen 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) amphiphiles including differently substituted pyridinium, pyrazinium, N-methyl piperidinium or N-methyl morpholinium moieties as the cationic head-group of the molecule have been designed and synthesised. 1,4-DHP amphiphiles have been earlier proposed as a promising tool for plasmid DNA (pDNA) delivery in vitro. In this work the ability of the 1,4-DHP amphiphiles to self-assemble, to bind pDNA and to transfer it into the cells as well as the cytotoxicity of 1,4-DHP amphiphiles–pDNA complexes was studied. Investigations of methyl lactate in the presence of reverse micelles by vibrational spectroscopy and circular dichroism

Abstract The FT-IR and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of ( S )- and -( R )-methyl lactate have been recorded for neat samples and at various concentrations in CCl 4 and DMSO solutions. These spectra are used to analyse the FT-IR and VCD spectra of methyl lactates in presence of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) in CCl 4 , where the surfactant molecules are known to form reverse micelles. Some tendency of methyl lactate to interact with AOT micellar aggregates is observed, but not as well defined as previously observed for dimethyl tartrate in analogous circumstances. Tenascin gene expression in rat liver and in rat liver cells. In vivo and in vitro studies.

Tenascin is a major glycoprotein constituent of the extracellular matrix with a strong affinity to fibronectin; its distribution is believed to be temporarily and spatially limited. Tenascin gene expression is increased during wound healing processes. As repair mechanisms in chronic liver diseases resemble wound healing we studied tenascin gene expression in rat liver and in isolated rat liver cells. In normal rat liver a tenascin specific antiserum stains sinusoidal cells with fiber-like prolongations, which at the same time are desmin-positive (ITO-cells). Human recombinant vasostatin-1 may interfere with cell-extracellular matrix interactions

Vasostatin-1 (VS-1), the N-terminal fragment derived from the cleavage of chromogranin A (CgA), has been shown to exert several biological activities on several tissues and organs. Recently, it has been reported that human recombinant VS-1 (STA-CGA(1-78)) may alter myocardial contractility in eel, frog., and rat hearts. Mechanisms involved in lipid accumulation and apoptosis induced by 1-nitropyrene in Hepa1c1c7 cells

International audience; 1-Nitropyrene (1-NP) is a nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (nitro-PAH) present in diesel exhaust and bound to particular matter in urban air. We show that 1-NP and the referent PAH benzo(a)pyrene (BP) induce apoptosis and a lipid accumulation dependent on cytochrome P450 1A1-metabolites in mouse hepatoma cells, whereas 1-amino-pyrene had no effect. The caspase inhibitor, N-benzyloxycarbonyl-Val-Ala-Asp(O-Me) fluoromethyl ketone (Z-VAD-fmk), inhibits 1-NP-induced apoptosis, but failed to alter 1-NP-triggered lipid accumulation determined by Nile red staining.
