BaCoO3 monoclinic structure and chemical bonding analysis: hybrid DFT calculations

2021

Cobalt based perovskites have great potential for numerous applications. Contrary to a generally assumed hexagonal space group (SG P63/mmc) model as the ground state of BaCoO3 (BCO), our hybrid DFT calculations with B1WC density functional and the symmetry group–subgroup derived crystal structure model support the ground state of BCO to be indeed monoclinic, in agreement with recent experimental predictions [Chin et al., Phys. Rev. B, 2019, 100, 205139]. We found for the monoclinic BCO that the C-type anti-ferromagnetic low-spin (AFM LS) state (SG P2/c) is energetically only slightly more preferential at 0 K than the ferromagnetic (FM) LS state (SG C2/c). In turn, these monoclinic structure…

Growth and production of three macrozoobenthic species in the Gulf of Riga, including comparisons with other areas

1999

Three soft-bottom stations in the southern part of the Gulf of Riga were studied during the period December 1993 to January 1995. The amphipods, Monoporeia affinis and Pontoporeia femorata, and the poychaete Marenzelleria viridis, were analysed for production, using the cohort growth method. Animals were also analysed for carbon and nitrogen content in a CHN-analyser. Based on size measurements, the quantitative data were divided into age-classes and the growth of each cohort was calculated first as wet weight and then converted into carbon and nitrogen content. Total annual production of each species was calculated as well as turnover ratios. The turnover ratio for Monoporeia affinis was e…

Causes of Public Expenditure Inefficiency and Proposals for Their Streamlining

2020

The public sector has continually developed, as new needs of the population have been identified and the expectations of the population regarding the quantity and the quality of the provided services have already been rising. Unlike private management, the public administration has not always been concerned with the way results have been achieved, but, particularly with the results themselves, and, as long as these have been satisfying for the population, the resources employed for obtaining the results were of no much concern. The public administration monopoly in the provision of some services has led to the possibility of generating imbalances between the quality of the provided services…

Seasonal population dynamics of Zeuxapta seriolae (Monogenea: Heteraxinidae) parasitising Seriola dumerili (Carangidae) in the Western Mediterranean.

2013

We examined the seasonal and yearly population dynamics of the monogenean pathogen Zeuxapta seriolae on juvenile fish from wild populations of Seriola dumerili. The study is based on bimonthly monitoring between April, 2005 and April, 2007 off Majorca, and newly obtained monogenean population data for juvenile fish from three additional localities in the Western Mediterranean (off Alicante, Corsica and Sardinia). We documented the highest intensities and abundances of Z. seriolae, with mean abundance values similar to or higher than those reported in the single case of wild fish mortalities reported to date. There was a recurrent pattern of seasonal change in infection with Z. seriolae in t…

Design of biopolymeric matrices entrapping bioprotective lactic acid bacteria to control Listeria monocytogenes growth: Comparison of alginate and al…

2014

In order to design biopolymeric matrices entrapping bioprotective lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to control undesirable microorganisms growth in foods, the performances of alginate and alginate-caseinate (an aqueous two-phase system) matrices entrapping Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis LAB3 cells were compared. Since efficient matrices should preserve the culturability and the antimicrobial activity of entrapped LAB3 cells for prolonged periods, they were both monitored for 12 days storage at 30 °C. Maximal cell density (∼109 CFU mL−1) was reached after 24 h whatever the matrix type. Then, the LAB3 cells population decreased: 107 and 106 CFU mL−1 were enumerated after 12 days in alginate-casein…

Chitosan films for the microbiological preservation of refrigerated sole and hake fillets

2013

The effect of chitosan films for shelf-life extension of fresh fillets of hake (Merluccius merluccius) and sole (Solea solea) was evaluated over a 15-day storage at 4 ± 1 °C. Fish fillets wrapped in a chitosan matrix were individually packaged in air (AP) and under vacuum (VP). Microbiological analyses (total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, Pseudomonas, H2S-producing bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae and Listeria monocytogenes were carried out during the shelf-life. The microbial species were inhibited (p < 0.05) by the presence of chitosan films, especially under VP conditions. A significant (p < 0.05) increase of the lag phase and a reduction of the final microbial populatio…

CD14+CD16+ Monocyte Binding to Myeloma Cells Is Required for Daratumumab Dependent Killing in Multiple Myeloma Patients

2018

Abstract Recently, the introduction of anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody, Daratumumab (DARA), in multiple myeloma (MM) therapy has improved the response rate of relapsed MM patients. However only a fraction of the DARA-treated patients respond, thus further studies on DARA mechanisms of action are needed. Because the antibody dependent cellular phagocytosis (ADCP) mediated by monocyte, is one of the mechanisms through DARA exerts its anti-MM activity, an ex-vivo approach was established in order to investigate which mechanisms or patient's immunological characteristics could influence DARA-mediated killing of MM cells. Bone marrow mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs) obtained from 25 MM patients (12 new…

V?9V?2 T lymphocytes activation in osteoporotic patients treated with bisphosphonates

2014

Treatment with bisphosphonates induces differentiation and activation of Vγ9Vδ2 T lymphocytes obtained from peripheral blood showing also an antitumoral effect in both in vitro and in vivo models. Aim of the present study was to determine in vivo the effect of BPs treatment in patients affected with osteoporosis on Vγ9Vδ2 T lymphocytes. We have studied Vγ9Vδ2 T lymphocytes expansion and differentiation from PBMC obtained from osteoporotic patients treated with one of the following bisphosphonates zoledronate, alendronate, neridronate or risedronate. We have found that zoledronic acid, followed by alendronate was the most effective on reducing CM population (100%) and increasing TEM and TEMR…

Fibre break failure processes in unidirectional composites: evaluation of critical damage states

2016

Earlier work which successfully modelled the kinetics of fibre breakage in unidirectional composites under monotonic tensile loading has been extended to quantify the kinetics of fibre failure during both monotonic and sustained tensile loading. In both cases, failure was seen to occur when a critical density of large clusters (more than 16 fibres are broken within the representative volume element) of fibre breaks developed. However, in monotonic loading failure occurred very quickly after the first development of these large clusters, whereas under sustained loading the composite could accommodate greater levels of large clusters because of the lower applied load. This article is part of …
