Soil legacy determines arbuscular mycorrhizal spore bank and plant performance in the low Arctic

AbstractHuman impact is rapidly changing vegetation globally. The effect of plant cover that no longer exists in a site may still affect the development of future vegetation. We focused on a little studied factor—arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus spore bank—and its effect on three test plant species. In a low Arctic field site, plots were maintained for 6 years, devoid of any vegetation or with a Solidago virgaurea monoculture cover. We analysed the AM fungal morphospecies composition and identified 21 morphospecies in the field plots. The AM morphospecies community was dominated by members of Acaulosporaceae. Mixed cropping, including intercropping, is the oldest form of systemized agricultural production and involves the growing of two or more species or cultivars of the same species simultaneously in the same field. However, mixed cropping has been little by little replaced by sole crop systems, especially in developed countries. Some of the advantages of mixed cropping are, for example, resource use efficiency and yield stability, but there are also several challenges, such as weed management and competition. Organic carbon dynamics in soil particle-size separates of sandy Spodosols when forest is cleared for maize cropping

Summary In southwest France, much of the forest lands on sandy Spodosols has been converted to continuous maize cropping in the last few decades. To evaluate the impacts of such change on the content and properties of the soil organic matter, we compared the amount of organic carbon and 13C natural abundance in soil and particle-size separates at three locations, selected on the basis of different contents of 0–50 μm particles (clay + silt). After three decades of cultivation, the amount of carbon from the forest pools (Cf) decreased by about 60%, attributable mainly to easily degradable material in sand-sized fractions (−70%). A re-analysis of the bird data revealed a mistake within the database query. Only bird individuals that were heard were integrated in the results leading to lower total richness and number of individuals. In total 115 species and 13,331 individuals were detected of which 41 were forest specialists (43% of all individuals), 40 forest generalists (41%) and 34 forest visitors (16%). The statistical analyses remain very similar. We recorded significant differences in mean bird species richness, number of individuals and relative species richness among the five forest types (Table 1). This investigation aimed to individuate the dietary factors affecting the milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentration in goats grazing herbaceous pasture and, particularly, to verify the relationship linking the diet crude protein (CP) content to MUN. A total of 205 individual observations regarding dietary and milk variables of 37 Girgentana goats involved in two experiments were used. Goats, averaging 154±14 days in milk and 38.1±5.4 kg of live weight, grazed on swards and received 500 g/d of barley meal. Comparative morphometrics of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo Cetti, 1777), reared in different conditions

The same genetic stock of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo), cultured in different conditions (lot A, monoculture tank; lot B, monoculture offshore cage; lot C, polyculture tank), was analysed using geometric morphometrics in order to detect changes in shape. Rearing in the offshore cage (lot B) had a significant effect on shape variation when compared to rearing in the two enclosed tanks (A and C). Fish from the tanks show a higher frequency (43.7% in lot A and 37.5% in lot C) of the so-called ‘goitred’ and ‘dorsal flat’ forms, their deformations shown by displacements in the corresponding landmarks of the infraopercular and dorsal areas.
