Effects of the gill parasite Zeuxapta seriolae (Monogenea: Heteraxinidae) on the amberjack Seriola dumerili Risso (Teleostei: Carangidae)
2004
Zeuxapta seriolae (Monogenea: Heteraxinidae) infection was associated with important mortalities of amberjacks (Seriola dumerili) reared in tanks in the experimental facilities of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (Western Mediterranean) during the period 1998–2000. Fish infested by this parasite presented characteristics similar to those described for Seriola quinqueradiata parasitized by Heteraxine heterocerca in Japan. All dead amberjacks had high parasite abundance (mean abundance±S.D.=686.7±125.4) and egg strings entangled in gills. The parasitological analysis of 17 live amberjacks collected from the infested tanks showed that 41.2% of fish harboured Z. seriolae with intensities r…
Evolutionary morphology in shape and size of haptoral anchors in 14 Ligophorus spp. (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae).
2017
The search for phylogenetic signal in morphological traits using geometric morphometrics represents a powerful approach to estimate the relative weights of convergence and shared evolutionary history in shaping organismal form. We assessed phylogenetic signal in the form of ventral and dorsal haptoral anchors of 14 species of Ligophorus occurring on grey mullets (Osteichthyes: Mugilidae) from the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The phylogenetic relationships among these species were mapped onto the morphospaces of shape and size of dorsal and ventral anchors and two different tests were applied to establish whether the spatial positions in the morphospace were dictated by …
Paradiplozoon iraqensis n. sp. (Monogenea: Diplozoinae) from Cyprinion macrostomum (Cyprinidae) in the Tigris River, Iraq
2015
A new species of monogenean diplozoid, Paradiplozoon iraqensis n. sp., from the gills of Cyprinion macrostomum Heckel from the Tigris River in Tikrit, Iraq is described. P. iraqensis n. sp. is distinguished from other species of the genus by the size of plicae on the fore- and hind body, the number of the branches of the intestinal caecum in fore body, intestinal caecum not extending to haptor, the size of the clamps and the morphology of the clamp sclerites, and by the length of the central hooks. Details of the shape and size of eggs, and of the reproductive system and prohaptoral region are provided. The present study raises the number of species of Paradiplozoon recorded in Iraq to 15.
Considerations on the taxonomy and morphology of Microcotyle spp.: redescription of M. erythrini van Beneden & Hesse, 1863 (sensu stricto) (Monog…
2020
AbstractBackgroundMicrocotyle erythrinivan Beneden & Hesse, 1863 (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea) and other closely related species of the genus are often considered as cryptic. Records in hosts other than the type-host with no species confirmation by molecular analyses have contributed to this situation.MethodsGill parasites of five sparid fishes,Boops boops(L.),Pagellus erythrinus(L.),P. acarne(Risso), Dentex dentex(L.) andPagrus pagrus(L.), from the Western Mediterranean off Spain were collected. Specimens ofMicrocotylespp. were characterised both molecularly and morphologically. Partial fragments (domains D1-D3) of the28SrRNA gene and the cytochromecoxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene were am…
Dactylogyrids on the gills of roach in central Finland: Features of infection and species composition
1991
Monogenean parasites were examined from the gills of 660 roach (Rutilus rutilus) in four interconnected lakes in Central Finland between February and November 1986 and in three of the same lakes between February and December 1988. One of the lakes is eutrophic and polluted due to a paper and pulp mill, one is oligotrophic and in a natural state, and the other two lakes are eutrophic. The prevalence of Dactylogyrus infection was always high. Differences between the lakes and the years were observed in the intensity of infection, which was significantly higher in the polluted lake. The intensity was also higher in older fish. Nine Dactylogyrus species were found, and of these D. crucifer and …
A New Species of Ligophorus (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) from the gills of the Flathead Mullet Mugil cephalus (Teleostei: Mugilidae) from Mexico
2015
AbstractA new monogenean species, Ligophorus yucatanensis n. sp. from the gills of the flathead mullet Mugil cephalus from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, is described. The new species can be differentiated from all other species of Ligophorus by the morphology of the accessory piece of the copulatory organ. Its main lobe is cylindrical, tunnelled expanded distally, slightly bowed with a characteristic membranous opening at level of medial bifurcation of the accessory piece, forming a thick-walled bulbshaped expansion that ends in a round labium. The secondary lobe is spatulate, straight, and shorter than the main lobe. In addition, the new species can be distinguished from other species by …
REDESCRIPTION OF ALLENCOTYLA MCINTOSHI PRICE, 1962 (MONOGENEA), WITH AN EMENDED DIAGNOSIS OF ALLENCOTYLA PRICE, 1962
2003
The original description of the type species of Allencotyla, A. mcintoshi Price, 1962, was based on 5 specimens collected from 1 amberjack Seriola lalandi in Florida. In this study, A. mcintoshi is redescribed based on new specimens collected from juvenile greater amberjacks S. dumerili captured off the Spanish Mediterranean coast and maintained in experimental culture tanks. Except for a slightly smaller size, individuals of S. dumerili were morphologically similar to the type specimens. However, reexamination of the type material and examination of the new specimens revealed the following discrepancies with respect to the original description: (1) the vaginal pore is unarmed and covered w…
Comparative study of the three attachment mechanisms of diplectanid monogeneans
2011
Abstract One of the main characteristics of the monogenean family Diplectanidae Monticelli, 1903 is their complex haptor formed by 2 pairs of hooks, transversal bars, 14 peripheral marginal hooks, and accessory adhesive organ (lamellodisc or squamodisc) that can be present or absent. Sub-family Lamellodiscinae Oliver, 1969 presents one or two lamellodiscs, formed by several overlapped lamellar esclerites (lamellae) which are piled up. Species like Furnestina echeneis only have one large ventral lamellodisc. This organ function has been categorized in different ways (i.e. accessory adhesive organ, supplementary or compensating disc or sucker), although its real mode of operation and function…
Drug survival of anakinra and canakinumab in monogenic autoinflammatory diseases: observational study from the International AIDA Registry
2021
Abstract Objectives To investigate survival of IL-1 inhibitors in monogenic autoinflammatory disorders (mAID) through drug retention rate (DRR) and identify potential predictive factors of drug survival from a real-life perspective. Patients and methods Multicentre retrospective study analysing patients affected by the most common mAID treated with anakinra or canakinumab. Survival curves were analysed with the Kaplan-Meier method. Statistical analysis included a Cox-proportional hazard model to detect factors responsible for drug discontinuation. Results Seventy-eight patients for a total of 102 treatment regimens were enrolled. The mean treatment duration was 29.59 months. The estimated D…
Goitrous Congenital Hypothyroidism and Hearing Impairment Associated with Mutations in the TPO and SLC26A4/PDS Genes
2006
Abstract Context: Pendred syndrome (PS) and thyroid peroxidase (TPO) deficiency are autosomal-recessive disorders that result in thyroid dyshormonogenesis. They share congenital hypothyroidism, goiter, and an iodide organification defect as common features. Whereas the hallmark of PS is sensorineural deafness, other forms of congenital hypothyroidism may also lead to hearing impairment. Therefore, a definite diagnosis may be difficult and require molecular genetic analyses. Case Report: The propositus presented at birth with primary hypothyroidism and goiter. He also had congenital bilateral moderate hearing loss, and PS was suspected. Methods: We sequenced the SLC26A4/PDS and TPO genes in …
