X-ray diffraction study of CF3Cl monolayers adsorbed on graphite (001)

X-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on mono- and submonolayers of CF3Cl physisorbed on the (001) surfaces of exfoliated graphite. Five quasi-twodimensional solid phases including the commensurate 2×2 phase, an electrically ordered phase and a disordered incommensurate phase have been observed. A phase diagram is proposed and the various phase transitions are discussed.

Monolayers of polymacromonomers with poly(vinyl)pyridine side chains of different lengths, polyPVP20.8 and polyPVP46.7, are studied at the air/water interface. Combination of reflection data and diffraction peaks allows the establishment of a structural model. In the expanded phase at pressures below approximately 15 mN/m, the side chains are adsorbed to the air/water interface, causing polymer backbone stretching and alignment of the single molecules. The in-plane peaks are due to the lateral electron density variation above and below the adsorption layer. Toward new organic/inorganic superlattices: Keggin polyoxometalates in Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films

The effect of Keggin heteropolyoxotungstates (XW12O40n- with X = H2, P, Si, B or Co) on Langmuir films has been studied for monolayers of DODA (dimethyldioctadecylammonium) and DPPC (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine). Marked modifications of the compression isotherms have been observed when the Keggin anions were dissolved in the subphase:  this demonstrates that the polyanions interact with the monolayer. Langmuir−Blodgett (LB) films have been readily obtained from these systems (even with DPPC) for a particular range in polyanion concentration. Chirality effects on 2D phase transitions

Monolayers of the racemate and pure enantiomers of 1-hexadecyl-glycerol were investigated by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GID) at 5 and 20 °C on compression from 0 mN m−1 to pressures greater than 30 mN m−1. The racemate lattice is centred-rectangular for both temperatures at all investigated pressures. However, at both temperatures, there is a sharp phase transition from a low-pressure phase, in which the molecules are tilted towards nearest neighbours (NN) and the distortion azimuth also points towards NN, to a high-pressure phase, in which the molecules are tilted towards next-nearest neighbours (NNN) and an NNN-distorted lattice is observed. Thickness and temperature dependent structure of Cd arachidate Langmuir-Blodgett films

Abstract The structure of monolayers of Cd arachidate on water and on solid support, and the thickness dependent changes when building up a multilayer via the LB technique are studied by means of grazing incidence diffraction of X-ray. In monolayers the perpendicularly oriented amphiphilic molecules are arranged in a hexagonal lattice, whereas for thicker layers (even for three layers) they crystallize in an orthorhombic unit cell with a reduced molecular are ( A = 18.2 A 2 ) compared to that of the monolayer ( A = 19.7 A 2 ). An electron diffraction study of deposited docosanoic acid monolayers

Docosanoic acid monolayers deposited on thin polymer films under different water surface conditions have been investigated using transmission electron diffraction at normal and tilted incidence. Diffraction patterns obtained from the L2 and L2' phase are quite similar, but distinctly different to samples coated from the CS phase. The former were consistent with molecules perpendicular to the substrate, arranged in a texture of grains with unusual orthorhombic packing. There is evidence for a phase transition from a liquid crystalline phase on the water surface.

An X-ray scattering study of lipid monolayers at the air-water interface and on solid supports

Abstract Monolayers of the lipid arachidic acid (C20) and of the phospholid dimyristolyphosphatidic acid (PMDA) have been studied by X-ray reflection and diffraction technique, using a purpose-built Langmuir trough installed at the sample stage of our high-resolution X-ray diffractometer at the DORIS synchroton X-ray source in Hamburg. For comparison we also report data for monolayers of C20 on a solid support using a 10 kW rotating anode X-ray source. By the X-ray reflection method, the density profile across the interface is probe, while in-plane diffraction measurements gauge the two-dimensional crystalline properties of the monolayers. Domain shapes and monolayer structures of triple-chain phospholipids on water

Two triple-chain phospholipid isomers were investigated at the air-water interface by means of fluorescence microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GID). The two lipids differ only in the position of the branched chain at the glycerol backbone. Fluorescence microscopy shows different domain sharp-edged domains. In the case of dendritic domains the chains are more tilted, the deviation from hexagonal symmetry is more pronounced and hence the lattice anisotropy is larger.

Condensed phases in monolayers of a triple-chain lecithin on water

Abstract A triple-chain phospholipid monolayer at the air-water interface is investigated by means of grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GID). Analysis of the diffraction spot profiles parallel and perpendicular to the surface yields different ordered phases. On increasing the lateral pressure at different temperatures the hydrocarbon chains form tilted phases with a tilt toward the nearest neighbors and eventually a hexagonal lattice with vertical chain orientation.
