Lipoma of the fossa femoralis mimicking a femoral hernia. Report of 2 cases

2018

Highlights • Femoral lipoma can be mistaken with femoral hernia. • Differential diagnosis between femoral lipoma and femoral hernia can result challenging. • The occurrence of femoral pain can lead to misinterpretation of the symptoms.

Management of rectal cancer in France in a well-defined population.

2014

Objective The aim of this study was to draw a picture of diagnostic assessment and patterns of care for rectal cancer in France using population-based registries data. Methods The study included a random sample of 669 cases of rectal cancers diagnosed in 2005. Results Diagnostic assessment was performed by colonoscopy in 91.4% of the cases. An abdominal computed tomography was performed in 59.4% of the cases and chest computed tomography in 47.8%. An R0 resection was performed in 65.8% of cases and an R1/R2 resection in 16.1%. A rectal endosocography was performed in 40.4% and MRI in 10.4%. The sphincter was preserved in 73.6% of patients aged younger than 75 years of age and in 62.5% of th…

Neuromuscular fatigue differs following unilateral vs bilateral sustained submaximal contractions

2011

The purpose of the present study was to compare the mechanisms of fatigue induced by a unilateral vs a bilateral submaximal isometric knee extension. Ten physically active men completed two experimental sessions, randomly presented. They were asked to maintain an isometric knee extension force corresponding to 20% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) until task failure with one leg (unilateral) vs two legs (bilateral). MVCs were performed before and after the sustained contraction. Transcutaneous electrical stimuli were used to examine central (voluntary activation) and peripheral (peak doublet force at rest) fatigue on the exercised leg. Time to task failure was significantly shorter…

Queratitis bacteriana por Moraxella nonliquefaciens

2020

Moraxella keratitis can lead to important complications. Moraxella nonliquefaciens(M. nonliquefaciens) has the worst prognosis. Only three cases of corneal infections due to M. nonliquefaciens have been published. The case is presented of a 79-year-old man with bullous keratopathy, recently affected with severe infectious keratitis. Dense, deep, and central stromal infiltrates and hyphaema were detected. After the identification of M. nonliquefaciens in the culture, and given the progression of the condition, the initial empirical treatment was modified to topical ciprofloxacin and ceftazidime in accordance with the antibiogram, combining oral ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin-clavulanate. Afte…

Endoscopic Resection of Superficial Esophageal Squamous-Cell Carcinomas: Western Experience

2004

Objectives Endoscopic resection of esophageal squamous-cell neoplasia with curative intent appears to be an alternative treatment to radical surgery when the malignant neoplasia is intraepithelial or limited to the mucosal layer, since the risk for lymph-node metastases is very low. In contrast to Japan, there has so far been only limited experience in Europe and the United States with endoscopic resection in such cases. In the present observational study, we report on the largest prospective series so far in Western countries of patients with early squamous-cell cancer or carcinoma in situ, who were treated using endoscopic resection therapy. Methods Between December 1997 and November 2001…

Preoperative chemoradiotherapy for oesophageal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis

2004

Background: The benefit of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in oesophageal cancer has been extensively studied but data on survival are still equivocal. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery in the reduction of mortality in patients with resectable oesophageal cancer. Methods: Computerised bibliographic searches of MEDLINE and CANCERLIT (1970–2002) were supplemented with hand searches of reference lists. Study selection: Studies were included if they were randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing preoperative chemoradiotherapy plus surgery with surgery alone, and if they included patients with resectable histologically proven oesophageal cancer wit…

Experience in a Military Trauma Surgery Department with External Skeletal Fixation of Femur Fractures

1989

Our experience with external skeletal fixation of complex open and closed femoral fractures in 50 conventional trauma victims is presented. Different external fixator systems were primarily used in 26 patients and secondarily in 24 patients. The authors feel that early definitive femoral fracture care in civilian and military trauma victims employing unilateral external monofixation, which avoids casts, and allows improved wound management and early mobilization of the multitrauma patient, has decreased the complication rate commonly associated with internal fixation of open femoral fractures.

Analyse der Pfannenveränderungen bei Morbus Perthes mittels Radiomorphometrie

2005

AIM Decreases in depth and irregularity are typical changes of the acetabulum in patients with Perthes disease and develop secondary to the femoral head involvement. Optimal timing of therapy plays an important role to prevent these secondary changes. The present study investigates the influence of the amount of femoral head involvement and the patients' age on the acetabulum and the outcome. METHODS 66 patients with 76 affected hip joints were included in the study. 20 hips had a conservative therapy, 22 an operative therapy (IVO). 34 hip joints underwent a conservative therapy at first, followed by an operative intervention. The radiomorphometric analyses at the time of diagnosis, pre- an…

Radiation exposure to the hands and the thyroid of the surgeon during intramedullary nailing.

1998

Abstract During 41 procedures of intramedullary nailing of femoral and tibial fractures, the primary surgeon and the first assistant wore ring dosimeters on their dominant index fingers. While the average fluoroscopy time per procedure was 4.6 min, the average dose of radiation to the dominant hand of the primary surgeon was 1.27 mSv and 1.19 mSv to the first assistant. The dose limit for the extremities is 500 mSv per year, as recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection. Extrapolation of the mean dose of the primary surgeon and first assistent per procedure of 1.23 mSv leads to the result that the recommended dose limit of 500 mSv would only be exceeded if more t…

Fístula aortoentérica secundaria a infección de prótesis aortobifemoral

2002
