Effects of oxotremorine and physostigmine on the inhibitory avoidance impairment produced by amitriptyline in male and female mice.

2009

We have previously observed that amitriptyline and other antidepressants produce impairing effects on inhibitory avoidance (also called passive avoidance) in mice of both sexes. In the present study we investigated the involvement of the cholinergic system in the inhibitory avoidance impairment produced by acute amitriptyline in male and female CD1 mice. For this purpose, the effects on said task of acute i.p. administration of several doses of amitriptyline, either alone or in combination with the cholinergic agonists oxotremorine and physostigmine, were evaluated. Pre-training administration of 5, 7.5, 10 or 15 mg/kg of amitriptyline produced a significant impairment of inhibitory avoidan…

Cholinergic modulation of the release of 5-hydroxytryptamine from the guinea pig ileum.

1987

Isolated segments of the guinea pig ileum were vascularly perfused and the release of 5-HT and its metabolite 5-HIAA into the portal venous effluent determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Test substances were applied via the arterial perfusion medium. Oxotremorine inhibited concentration-dependently the release of 5-HT and 5-HIAA (by 47% at 1 mumol/l). Scopolamine (0.1 mumol/l) did not affect the release of 5-HT and 5-HIAA, but antagonized the effect of oxotremorine. In the presence of TTX (1 mumol/l), oxotremorine (1 mumol/l) increased the release of 5-HT by 150% and that of 5-HIAA by 220%. This increase was completely blocked by scopolamine. Hexamethonium (100 mumol/l) and TTX…

Characterization of the muscarine receptors involved in the modulation of serotonin release from the vascularly perfused small intestine of guinea pi…

1989

Isolated small intestinal segments of the guinea pig were arterially perfused and the release of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) into the portal venous effluent measured by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Test substances were applied via the arterial perfusion medium. McN-A-343, pilocarpine and oxotremorine inhibited concentration-dependently the outflow of 5-HT and 5-HIAA. Pirenzepine (0.03-0.1 mumol/l) which can discriminate between M1 and M2-receptor subtypes antagonized completely this inhibitory effect. In the presence of 1 mumol/l tetrodotoxin (TTx), all three muscarine receptor agonists increased the outflow of 5-HT and 5-HIAA. O…

On simfitting MER Mössbauer data to characterize Martian hematite

2010

Mossbauer spectra of Eagle Crater outcrop rocks in Meridiani Planum were acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Opportunity. Sixty spectra, containing ~20 to 60% hematite by area, were simultultaneously fit (simfit) in a self-consistent manner to a single chi-squared minimum, where relations among parameters from different spectra were defined for both sol (Martian day) and acquisition temperature (200–280 K). Different spectral models were compared, hematite being modeled optimally with two sextets. Sextet S1 (~35% of total sextet area) has narrower linewidths, a larger magnetic hyperfine field, and a quadrupole shift that changes smoothly from positive to negative values as the temp…

Distinct hematite populations from simultaneous fitting of Mössbauer spectra from Meridiani Planum, Mars

2010

[1] At Meridiani Planum, Mars, hematite occurs as a lag of ∼5 mm diameter spherules and their fragments and within the matrix of the sulfate-rich outcrop as <30 μm particles. Well crystalline and chemically pure bulk hematite undergoes a magnetic transition at ∼264 K (Morin transition) that can be detected by Mossbauer spectroscopy and is within the Martian diurnal temperature range. We analyzed outcrop and lag hematite Mossbauer spectra obtained by the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Opportunity as a function of temperature using a simultaneous fitting procedure to determine the Morin temperature and the temperature interval over which it occurs. Mossbauer spectra for terrestrial hematite-bea…

La Méthode como hermenéutica musical Homenaje a Edgar Morin por su 100º cumpleaños

2021

The present work addresses the principles and properties of the complex thought formulated by the French thinker Edgar Morin and the way in which he was able me to articulate his conception of organizational complexity with one of the most important theories of musical analysis, which emerged at the beginning of the 20th century: the schenkerian analysis. It is a review and extension of a few pages of my doctoral thesis, which are intended to pay tribute to who has been, in addition to my teacher, Honorary President of Itamar since its first issue. His teachings and support has always been the engine for my quest for musical organization. On July 21, 2021, Morin celebrated his 100th birthda…

Paradox between malnutrition and nutritional richness of foods in Madagascar: the example of Moringa oleifera

2013

Madagascar has two faces: a developing country with a high percentage of population under poverty scale, and a country rich in natural resources. Only few studies examined this paradox between malnutrition prevalence and food availability. In other developing countries Moringa oleifera (MO) was proposed as a potential solution for its high nutritional value. In Madagascar this plant grows in the wild. The present research investigated why MO leaves are not part of Malagasy diet and how it could be introduce as daily food. A first study examined the actual nutritional composition of Malagasy MO leaves, and a second one the perceived nutritional value of these leaves by Malagasy people. Results …

Long-distance spin-transport across the Morin phase transition up to room temperature in ultra-low damping single crystals of the antiferromagnet α-F…

2020

Antiferromagnetic materials can host spin-waves with polarizations ranging from circular to linear depending on their magnetic anisotropies. Until now, only easy-axis anisotropy antiferromagnets with circularly polarized spin-waves were reported to carry spin-information over long distances of micrometers. In this article, we report long-distance spin-transport in the easy-plane canted antiferromagnetic phase of hematite and at room temperature, where the linearly polarized magnons are not intuitively expected to carry spin. We demonstrate that the spin-transport signal decreases continuously through the easy-axis to easy-plane Morin transition, and persists in the easy-plane phase through …
