"Hyökkäys Moskovaan!" – Tapaus Raid over Moscow Suomen ja Neuvostoliiton välisessä ulkopolitiikassa 1980-luvulla
2011
Artikkeli käsittelee Suomen ensimmäistä poliittisesti latautunutta tietokonepelikohua, joka syttyi helmikuussa vuonna 1985 MikroBitissä julkaistusta Raid over Moscow’n peliarvostelusta.
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soils of the Moscow region: Concentrations and small-scale distribution along an urban–rural transect
2006
In soils of the Moscow region, we examined PCB concentrations in bulk samples and aggregate fractions. Topsoils under grassland and forest at five locations along a southeast-bound transect from Moscow and at a northeastern background location (grassland only) were analysed. We collected aggregates1 cm and fractionated them into interior and exterior portions and also analysed the remaining soil without the aggregates1 cm. The concentrations of the sum of 17 PCBs (sigma17PCBs) in 35 bulk soil samples ranged from 3.1 to 42 microg kg(-1). This was 48-61% of the sigma33PCBs determined in 23 selected samples. The congeners 138(+158), 101 and 52 were most abundant. All PCB concentrations and the…
CNO and pep solar neutrino measurements and perspectives in Borexino
2015
International audience; The detection of neutrinos emitted in the CNO reactions in the Sun is one of the ambitious goals of Borexino Phase-II. A measurement of CNO neutrinos would be a milestone in astrophysics, and would allow to solve serious issues in current solar models. A precise measurement of the rate of neutrinos from the pep reaction would allow to investigate neutrino oscillations in the MSW transition region. The pep and CNO solar neutrino physics, the measurement in Borexino Phase-I and the perspectives for the new phase are reviewed in this proceeding.
To control the world’s information flows – Soviet Cold War broadcasting
2013
The radio journalist James Wood has described the high power shortwave transmitter as the weapon of the Cold War.1 There is a reason for this: both superpowers sought constantly throughout the Cold War to expand their transmitting power to reach even the most distant places and provide ever more language services to nations they wished to influence. Radio broadcasting became the way to contact foreign populations and convey the message of the foreign government. Yet, while messages never went through in such a mechanistic way, radio broadcasting emerged as an extremely important part of Cold War strategy for both warring parties. However, while there have been numerous studies about western…
CeSOX: An experimental test of the sterile neutrino hypothesis with Borexino
2017
International audience; The third phase of the Borexino experiment that’s referred to as SOX is devoted to test the hypothesis of the existence of one (or more) sterile neutrinos at a short baseline (~5–10m). The experimental measurement will be made with artificial sources namely with a 144Ce–144Pr antineutrino source at the first stage (CeSOX) and possibly with a 51Cr neutrino source at the second one. The fixed 144Ce–144Pr sample will be placed beneath the detector in a special pit and the initial activity will be about 100 – 150 kCi. The start of data taking is scheduled for April 2018. The article gives a short description of the preparation for the first stage and shows the expected s…
Anton Čechov, Il giardino dei ciliegi
2023
Anton Chekhov wrote his last play, Višnëvyj sad (The Cherry Orchard), at the dawn of the twentieth century. From Yalta on 22 April 1901 he sent a letter to the Moscow Art Theater’s actress Olga Knipper, whom he would marry within a year, telling her that he was tempted to write a four acts vaudeville or a comedy, and would have been able to send it to the Art Theatre «not before the end of 1903». So it was. And so it takes shape for the scene The Cherry Orchard; Chekhov managed to create «a spider's web» with which he captured the attention and the mind of the spectators of the first opening of the play in 1904, as well as of every subsequent re-run on all the stages of the world. The Cherr…
Handgrip strength and its prognostic value for mortality in Moscow, Denmark, and England.
2017
BACKGROUND: This study compares handgrip strength and its association with mortality across studies conducted in Moscow, Denmark, and England.MATERIALS: The data collected by the Study of Stress, Aging, and Health in Russia, the Study of Middle-Aged Danish Twins and the Longitudinal Study of Aging Danish Twins, and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing was utilized.RESULTS: Among the male participants, the age-standardized grip strength was 2 kg and 1 kg lower in Russia than in Denmark and in England, respectively. The age-standardized grip strength among the female participants was 1.9 kg and 1.6 kg lower in Russia than in Denmark and in England, respectively. In Moscow, a one-kilogram …
