THE USE OF NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS IN THE BIOMONITORING OF TRACE ELEMENT DEPOSITION IN THE OPOLE PROVINCE

2013

Abstract The neutron activation analysis procedure was used to determine the concentration of 42 elements: Na, Mg, Al, Cl, K, Ca, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Zr, Nb, Mo, I, Ag, Cd, Sb, Ba, Cs, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, Hf, Ta, W, Au, Hg, Th, and U accumulated in mosses sampled for testing in September and October 2011 in the Opole Province (Southern Poland). Samples of different moss species were collected near the intersections of the grid lines marked on the map of the province. The distance between the points was approximately 20 km. The analysis of the results made it possible to identify the places of increased deposition of element-pollutants and to indicate t…

Hemoglobin dynamics in rat erythrocytes investigated by Mssbauer spectroscopy

1991

Rats have been enriched in 57Fe and erythrocytes were isolated from the blood. Mössbauer absorption spectroscopy on the hemoglobin of these erythrocytes has shown rather similar dynamics as found earlier in crystals of myoglobin, in frozen solutions of human hemoglobin and in a number of other proteins. The results strongly indicate that the motion of the heme and presumably some part of the F-helix is mainly influenced by the average viscosity of the sample determined by a network of hydrogen bridges and other weak interactions. Extrapolations of Mössbauer results from protein crystals to proteins in their physiological surroundings seem to be suitable for heme proteins.

Equilibrium, Structural and Biological Activity Studies on [Organotin(IV)]n+ Complexes

2008

Organotin(IV) compounds are characterized by the presence of at least one covalent C–Sn bond. The compounds contain tetravalent {Sn} centers and are classified as mono-, di-, tri-, and tetraorganotin(IV), depending on the number of alkyl (R) or aryl (Ar) moieties bound. The anions are usually Cl, F, O2, OH,–COO, or –S. It seems that the nature of the anionic group has only secondary importance in biological activity. The rapid rise in the industrial (catalyst in PVC and foam production), agricultural (fungicides and acaricides), and biological applications (wood, stone, and glass preservatives) of organotin(IV) compounds during the last few decades has led to their accumulation in the envir…

Spin crossover behavior in a series of iron(III) alkoxide complexes.

2015

The synthesis, crystal structures, magnetic behavior, and electron paramagnetic resonance studies of five new FeIII spin crossover (SCO) complexes are reported. The [FeIIIN5O] coordination core is constituted of the pentadentate ligand bztpen (N5) and a series of alkoxide anions (ethoxide, propoxide, n-butoxide, isobutoxide, and ethylene glycoxide). The methoxide derivative previously reported by us is also reinvestigated. The six complexes crystallize in the orthorhombic Pbca space group and show similar molecular structures and crystal packing. The coordination octahedron is strongly distorted in both the high- and low-temperature structures. The structural changes upon spin conversion ar…

Giuseppe Maggiore

2010

Additional reports for Italian moss flora.

2013

As a result of the study of both recent collections and a review of herbarium specimens, the following taxa are reported for the first time from various Italian regions: Hedwigia stellata Hedenas, Hedwigia ciliata var. leucophaea Bruch & Schimp., Pleurozium schreberi (Willd. ex Brid.) Mitt. and Ptychostomum compactum Hornsch. var. compactum. The last taxon is new for southern Italy, while the report of Pleurozium schreberi confirms the occurrence of this species in southern Italy after more than half a century. Moreover, Crossidium laxefilamentosum Frey & Kurschner represents the second report of this species from Italy.

Passive sampling of PAHs in indoor air in Nepal

1999

PAHs were sampled in ten homes in the Makwanpur region, Nepal. SPMDs and moss bags (Sphagnum girgensohnii) were used as passive samplers. Soot particles on the SPMD surfaces were also analyzed for PAHs. The overall PAH concentrations in SPMDs were significantly higher than those in moss bags. Total PAH mean concentrations of ten houses were 535μg/g lipid for SPMDs and 7.2 μg/g moss (dw) for moss bags. Ratios of phenanthrene/anthracene in indoor SPMDs and particulate matter varied from 2.9 to 3.5 and ratios of fluoranthene/pyrene varied from 1.1 to 1.4. The values for moss bags were respectively 1.7–3.6 and 0.8–2.4. These ratios indicate that the PAHs are from combustion origin. The PAH conc…

Orthotrichum karoo (Orthotrichaceae), a new species with hyaline-awned leaves from southwestern Africa

2009

A new Orthotrichum species, 0. karoo, is described. The moss has a gametophyte similar to that of 0. diaphanum, from which it mainly differs in its peristome lacking exostome teeth. It is known from three localities in western South Africa, and from one more in southern Namibia. In all these localities it was found growing on shrubs and trees, rarely on rocks, in succulent karoo and related types of vegetation.

Updated description and distribution of the Patagonian moss Ulota macrodontia Dusén ex Malta (Orthotrichaceae)

2021

Ulota macrodontia Dusen ex Malta is an Andean-Patagonian epiphytic moss that has been misunderstood in recent times (Garilleti et al. 2016). This may be due partly to the fact that it is a rarely c...
