Parenthood and gender inequality : Population-based evidence on the child penalty in Finland
2019
This study presents evidence on the effect of parenthood on labor market outcomes in Finland. We use population-based data drawn from administrative registers and an event study design centered around the birth of the first child using the specification proposed in Kleven et al. (2019b). The study confirms that women encounter large short- and long-term child penalties in gross labor earnings and that penalties are associated with employment participation. Taxes and social security transfers considerably reduce the child penalty, which also varies by the number of children. peerReviewed
Cisplatin plus weekly vinorelbine versus cisplatin plus vinorelbine on days 1 and 8 in advanced non-small cell lung cancer: a prospective randomized …
2008
Summary Purpose A phase III randomized trial was carried out to compare two schedules of the vinorelbine (VNR)–cisplatin (CDDP) regimen in patients with locally advanced unresectable poor prognosis stage IIIB or metastatic stage IV non-small cell lung cancer. The primary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and analysis of toxicity, while secondary endpoints included response rates, time-to-progression (TTP) and quality of life (QoL). Patients and methods Eligible patients were randomized to receive: (a) VNR 25 mg/m 2 on day 1, 8 and 15 plus CDDP 100 mg/m 2 on day 1 every 4 weeks or (b) VNR 30 mg/m 2 on day 1 and 8 plus CDDP 80 mg/m 2 on day 1 every 3 weeks. All patients were chemotherapy-n…
The carabid Pterostichus melanarius uses chemical cues for opportunistic predation and saprophagy but not for finding healthy prey
2017
The sentinel prey method can quantify predation pressure in various habitats. Real prey is assumed to more realistically mimic the predator experience but the predator can rarely be identified. Artificial prey made of plasticine may lack real chemical cues, but provides information about predator identity. However, the relationship between predation pressure registered by artificial versus real prey is not clear. We tested the relative attractiveness of artificial caterpillars, and intact, wounded, or dead larvae of the cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae) for the carabid predator Pterostichus melanarius Illiger (Coleoptera: Carabidae). P. melanarius adults were attracted to dead caterpillars …
Aktywizowanie rozwoju sprawności słuchania w języku polskim jako ojczystym
2020
The aim of the present article is to present the typology of listening comprehension skills activated during Polish language lessons. What the author claims is that in Polish school two types of listening co-exist, namely: natural and activated. The former resembles conditions of natural communication, since a student assumes the role of text recipient, whereas the latter is a process of teaching the skills of listening comprehension. Based on questions and instructions elicited from selected school handbooks shows in what way the activated type of listening comprehension is taught as a part of Polish as a mother tongue lessons.
"I'm Indiana Jones!": intertextuality and humor in How I Met Your Mother
2012
Intertekstuaalisuus eli tekstienvälisyys on osa kirjallisuuden tutkimusta.
Optimizing intravesical chemotherapy in patients with non muscle invasive bladder carcinoma.

Re: Urinary pH is Highly Associated With Tumor Recurrence During Intravesical Mitomycin C Therapy for Nonmuscle Invasive Bladder Tumor
2011
The authors should be congratulated for their attention to basic and open questions on intravesical therapy of nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer. Intravesical delivery of chemotherapy remains partly empirical, and the pharmacokinetics poorly understood. Every attempt to optimize intravesical therapy should be welcomed. Expensive new strategies to deliver an effective therapeutic tumor dose are currently being explored.1,2 It is reasonable (and mandatory) first to consider and study the basic principles of pharmacokinetics. In this retrospective study Maeda et al investigate the role of pH on the efficacy of intravesical mitomycin C (MMC) in vivo. Their experience shows that urinary pH highe…
Adjuvant intravesical therapy in intermediate risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) recurring after first cycle of intravesical treatment.
2011
Introduction and objectives The therapeutic management of intermediate risk NMI-BC recurring after intravesical therapy (IT) is not established. Cystectomy will be offered to patients at higher risk of progression but the majority will be retreated by IT. Although some Authors suggest BCG when intravesical chemotherapy (ICH) fails, some patients are retreated by ICH and some others repeat BCG adopted as first-line treatment. Not many studies have been published on this issue. The response to retreatment by intravesical therapy in terms of recurrence-free rate (RFR) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) is analyzed in 179 intermediate-risk patients. Materials and methods Only intermediate-risk …

“F*** this shit” : Negotiating the Boundaries of Public Expression of Mother’s Negative Feelings
2021
In 2017, Finnish celebrity Sini Ariell published a blog post titled “F*** this shit” in which she revealed her difficult feelings as a mother of a newborn baby. Attracting attention from Finnish media, the post went viral. Through the empirical analysis of affective reactions to the post on an anonymous online discussion board, we explore how the limits of the public expression of negative maternal feelings are negotiated and maintained, but also challenged. Our results highlight the normative, even punitive dynamics of the digital intimate public, as commenters on the discussion board often argued that struggles and unhappiness during motherhood should not be made public but dealt with in …
