The limits of visual mass perception

The theory of direct perception suggests that observers can accurately judge the mass of a box picked up by a lifter shown in a point-light display. However, accurate perceptual performance may be limited to specific circumstances. The purpose of the present study was to systematically examine the factors that determine perception of mass, including display type, lifting speed, response type, and lifter's strength. Generic Inhibition of the Selected Movement and Constrained Inhibition of Nonselected Movements during Response Preparation

Abstract Previous studies have identified two inhibitory mechanisms that operate during action selection and preparation. One mechanism, competition resolution, is manifest in the inhibition of the nonselected response and attributed to competition between candidate actions. The second mechanism, impulse control, is manifest in the inhibition of the selected response and is presumably invoked to prevent premature response. Measuring threshold and latency of motion perception on a swinging bed.

Introduction Our objective was to develop and to evaluate a system to measure latency and threshold of pendular motion perception based on a swinging bed. Materials and methods This prospective study included 30 healthy adults (age: 32 ± 12 years). All subjects were tested twice with a 10 min. interval. A second trial was conducted 2 to 15 days after. A rehabilitation swinging bed was connected to an electronic device emitting a beep at the beginning of each oscillation phase with an adjustable time lag. The effect of body posture on long range time-to-contact estimation

On Earth, gravity accelerates freely moving objects downward, whereas upward-moving objects are being decelerated. Do humans take internalised knowledge of gravity into account when estimating time-to-contact (TTC, the time remaining before the moving object reaches the observer)? To answer this question, we created a motion-prediction task in which participants saw the initial part of an object's trajectory moving on a collision course prior to an occlusion. Wavelength dependence of the optomotor response in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Abstract The action spectrum of motion detection in zebrafish (Danio rerio) was measured using the optomotor response in the light adapted state. The function has a single maximum at 550–600 nm, and is similar to the spectral sensitivity function of the L-cone type in the mid and long wavelength range. At shorter wavelengths the values of three of the five fish tested are lower. As in goldfish [Vis. Res. 36 (1996) 4025], the result indicates a dominance of the L-cone type with an inhibitory influence of M- or S-cones. Considerable deficits in the detection performance of the cat after lesion of the suprasylvian visual cortex

The ability of two cats to discriminate between two geometrical outline patterns in the presence of superimposed structured background was tested before and after bilateral removal of the lateral suprasylvian visual areas (PMLS, PLLS, AMLS, ALLS, part of area 7). There were mild deficits when patterns and background were kept stationary; these deficits may be due to a partial undercutting of areas 17, 18 and 19. However, there was a severe impairment in performance when the patterns were moving on a stationary background which may be due to loss of the suprasylvian visual areas. Movement of the background relative to the figure resulted in an intermediate detection deficit.

Improvement of motor performance by observational training in elderly people.

Action observation influences action execution; this strong coupling is underlined by an overlap of cortical areas activated during observation and execution of action, and is dependent of specific motor experience. The goal of the present study was to verify if action observation can be used for rehabilitation of elderly people. We tested this question with a protocol of observational practice of 2 frequently used movements: walking and sit-to-stand/back-to-sit.
