Music Education as a Tool to Improve Socio-emotional and Intercultural Health within Adverse Contexts in El Salvador

2017

Abstract Educators must address emotional, affective, social and intercultural health, taking into account learners’ specific cultural and economic context in their teaching. This article discusses the experience in la Comunidad Iberia in San Salvador (El Salvador), one of the most conflict-ridden areas in the country. Here, educators created a music education program as a tool to prevent violence and improve the students’ socio-emotional health. This group's lives had been characterized by affective, economic, emotional and intercultural deprivation, which prompted feelings of disdain for their own culture. The process followed led them to consider music as an instrument to improve their s…

Augmented Reality Applications: The Impact of Usability and Emotional Perceptions on Tourists’ App Experiences

2019

There is a rising amount of research contributing to the knowledgebase of Augmented Reality (AR) application usage. However, up until now there is no sound understanding about how the emotional perception of AR application users impact on different types of experience. This paper aspires to contribute to this gap by analysing the link between usability, emotional perception (i.e. entertainment, playfulness and enjoyment), two types of experience viz. action- and emotional experience and users’ intention to use the app in a travel context. 796 questionnaires show that emotional experience is driven by entertainment while action experience is mainly triggered by playfulness. However, only emo…

El ejercicio físico y la promoción de la salud en la infancia y la juventud

1992

SummaryThe «new health consciousness» that emerged in the developing countries in the 70s and 80s, has contributed to consider exercise as an element of health promotion. But it can establish simplistic relationships between exercise and health, particularly critical for professionals who develop promotion programmes. In this paper, five problematic aspects linked, to exercise and health relationships both in children and youngsters, are discussed and should be taken into account when promoting health programmes. We refer to: 1) the problematic role of exercise in health promotion and in physical education curriculum as an area of privileged action in children and youngsters; 2) the automat…

From creative city to generative governance of the cultural policy system? The case of Barcelona's candidature as UNESCO City of Literature

2017

Abstract Since the 1980s, cultural policies have been increasingly oriented to promoting cities. However, under the paradigm of the creative city, this approach had presented several dilemmas and contradictions. Since then, there have been various attempts to tackle such issues through a more systematic approach to cultural policy — what we identify as cultural governance oriented to cultural generation. Barcelona is a paradigmatic case illustrating this trend. The city's candidature as UNESCO City of Literature in 2015 reveals an attempt to combine international promotion, development of local cultural industries, citizen cultural engagement. Moreover, this project emerges as an attempt to…

Deceit and facial expression in children: the enabling role of the “poker face” child and the dependent personality of the detector

2015

This study presents the relation between the facial expression of a group of children when they told a lie and the accuracy in detecting the lie by a sample of adults. To evaluate the intensity and type of emotional content of the children’s faces, we applied an automated method capable of analyzing the facial information from the video recordings (FaceReader 5.0 software). The program classified videos as showing a neutral facial expression or an emotional one. There was a significant higher mean of hits for the emotional than for the neutral videos, and a significant negative correlation between the intensity of the neutral expression and the number of hits from the detectors. The lies ex…

The Role of e-Tutor Competencies in Postgraduate e-Learning Courses: Spotlight on Emotion Management

2021

The role of e-learning in the existing and challenging educational era is crucial. However, it is necessary to overcome some drawbacks such as feelings of isolation and a lack of emotional contact. In this sense, emotion management is a key driver of student satisfaction in e-learning, which is significantly related to students’ motivation, learning, cognitive strategies, self-regulation, and personality antecedents in the classroom. This article examines an online postgraduate course in financial statements auditing, describing the resources used by the e-tutor to conduct affective tutorials, reduce students’ feelings of isolation, increase student involvement, and achieve success in e-lea…

Toddlers’ understanding of basic emotions: identification, labeling and causality / La comprensión temprana de las emociones básicas: identificación,…

2014

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to explore the early acquisition pattern of the understanding of basic emotions. Many studies indicate that three-year-old children identify emotions such as joy or sadness, but it is not known how this knowledge arises. Fifty-seven boys and girls between 21 and 32 months were assessed using the Brunet-Lezine-R developmental scale (BL-R) (Josse, 1997) and the Affective knowledge Test (AKT) (Denham, 1986). Through this test we evaluated the children’s knowledge of four basic emotions (happiness, sadness, anger and fear) in three of its components (identification, causality and linguistic labeling). In order to track knowledge acquisition longitudinally, a sma…

Measuring music-induced emotion: A comparison of emotion models, personality biases, and intensity of experiences

2011

Most previous studies investigating music-induced emotions have applied emotion models developed in other fields to the domain of music. The aim of this study was to compare the applicability of music-specific and general emotion models – namely the Geneva Emotional Music Scale (GEMS), and the discrete and dimensional emotion models – in the assessment of music-induced emotions. A related aim was to explore the role of individual difference variables (such as personality and mood) in music-induced emotions, and to discover whether some emotion models reflect these individual differences more strongly than others. One hundred and forty-eight participants listened to 16 film music excerpts a…
