Smart vs conventional motorways: environmental impact assessment under realistic traffic conditions

Abstract This research aims at assessing the environmental impacts exerted by a smart motorway compared to those of a traditional motorway. The study has global policy implications: it takes into account the impacts due to the construction and maintenance of the infrastructure and the environmental effects produced by the traffic emissions, taking into account smart technologies and truck platooning regulation. The widening of the motorway network in France, during the nineties, gives the opportunity to analyze the relationships between accessibility and tourism. The A 39 skirts the foothills of the Jura and improve its accessibility although it does not penetrate into the mountains. From this example, we wished to evaluate the impact of such an infrastructure on the tourism activity in the Jura. The paper presents the vegetation types with invasive Senecio inaequidens along the road verges in the Opole Silesia. The large population of this South-African species was located in the second half of June 2018 in the green belt (central reservation) along the A4 motorway (motorway section Brzeg – Opole).
Nowe stanowiska interesujących halofitów wzdłuż autostrady A-4 na Śląsku Opolskim

The paper presents new sites of interesting synanthropic plants in the Opole Silesia. Three halophilous species,Plantago coronopus L. Spergularia marina (L.) Besser and Cochlearia officinalis L. were found on road verges of motorway A4 within the section Brzeg – Prądy. All species were observed with very large population sizes. They can thrive because of de-icing of the motorway surface with the application of sodium chloride spray.

Construction of the A-4 Motorway section in the Opole Region begun in Summer 1997. Very soon vigorous resistance of ecological NGOs was encountered. The bone of contention was the section of motorway that passes through the Góra Świętej Anny Landscape Park and verges the natural reserve of strict protection Ligota Dolna where rare species of thermophilic plants are sheltered. Between 2011 and 2013 a detailed mycological, geobotanical, floristic and fauna research took place within the right-of-way of the A-4 Motorway section crossing the Góra Świętej Anny Landscape Park in the Opole Region. Do budowy opolskiego odcinka autostrady A-4 przystąpiono latem 1997 r. Niedługo po rozpoczęciu budowy zaczęły się ostre protesty organizacji ekologicznych. Kością niezgody stał się jej odcinek przecinający Park Krajobrazowy Góra Świętej Anny, bezpośrednio sąsiadujący również ze ścisłym rezerwatem przyrody Ligota Dolna, chroniącym rzadką roślinność ciepłolubną. W latach 2011-2013 na terenie pasa drogowego autostrady A4 przechodzącego przez teren Parku Krajobrazowego Góra Świętej Anny w województwie opolskim przeprowadzono szczegółowe badania mikologiczne, geobotaniczne, florystyczne i faunistyczne.
