Molecular and isotopic composition of free hydrocarbon gases from Sicily, Italy

2004

Chemical and isotopic data have been used as geochemical tracers for a genetic characterization of hydrocarbon gases from a total of eleven manifestations located in Eastern and Central-Southern Sicily (Italy). The molecular analysis shows that almost all the samples are enriched in methane (up to 93.2% Vol.), with the exception of four gas samples collected around Mt. Etna showing high mantle-derived CO2 content. Methane isotope signatures suggest that these are thermogenic gases or a mixture between thermogenic gases and microbial gases. Although samples from some mud volcanoes in Southern Sicily (Macalube di Aragona) show isotope signatures consistent with a mixing model between thermoge…

Contributo alla conoscenza della vegetazione e del paesaggio vegetale della Riserva Naturale “Monte Cofano” (Sicilia occidentale).

2008

It is here presented the results of a study of the phytosociological and plant landscape of Mount Cofano Natural Reserve (Custonaci, Trapani) together with a cartographic representation to a scale of 1:10000 (reduced to a scale of 1:20000). The studied area is localised along the western side of Sicily island and it is spread out for 537,5 ha, dominated by Mt. Cofano rocky promontory (659 mts.), regarded as one of the most interesting biotopes of the regional territory linked to its floristic, zoological and environmental features. From a geolithological point of view, the area is characterized by carbonathic substrata relative to Monte Sparacio-Monte Cofano and Monte Speziale-Monte Palatim…

Homoclinic Solutions of Nonlinear Laplacian Difference Equations Without Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz Condition

2021

The aim of this paper is to establish the existence of at least two non-zero homoclinic solutions for a nonlinear Laplacian difference equation without using Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz type-conditions. The main tools are mountain pass theorem and Palais-Smale compactness condition involving suitable functionals.

An elliptic equation on n-dimensional manifolds

2020

We consider an elliptic equation driven by a p-Laplacian-like operator, on an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold. The growth condition on the right-hand side of the equation depends on the geometry of the manifold. We produce a nontrivial solution by using a Palais–Smale compactness condition and a mountain pass geometry.

CRITERIA FOR SUSTAINABILITY OF OLD-AGE PENSION SYSTEM BASED ON THE NDC PRINCIPLES

2015

The topicality of the research subject. The foundations of the old-age pension scheme based on notional accounts, also referred to as the “notional defined contribution” or “non-financial defined contribution” (NDC) old-age pension scheme, were laid in Sweden in 1994, when the prevailing view was that a sustainable defined-contribution PAYG old-age pension scheme is impossible. Since then, the NDC system modifications have been implemented in several countries; since 2000, this scheme is also part of the Latvian pension system and works significantly better than the other part of the pension system - the funded pension scheme. However, the sustainability of NDC scheme is still being questio…

Voce "Olympian deities"

2016

The Greek gods are collectively designated in the literary sources as Olympian, with a clear reference to their seat on the top of Olympos mountain, or more generally in heaven. Beginning with nineteenth-century scholarship, Olympian deities have been considered a monolithic divine category separate from the chthonic deities in a dichotomous understanding of Greek religion.

A syntaxonomical survey of the Sicilian dwarf shrub vegetation belonging to the class Rumici-Astragaletea siculi

2005

Basing on literature data and unpublished relevés from Sicily, a survey of the syntaxa belonging to the class Rumici-Astragaletea siculi Pignatti & Nimis 1980 em. Mucina 1997 (= Cerastio-Carlinetea nebrodensis Brullo 1984) is presented. The class groups orophilous plant communities dominated by dwarf- shrubs, often with a pulvinate and thorny growth form. The class is represented in Sicily by two orders: Rumici-Astragaletalia siculi Pignatti & Nimis 1980, including the sole alliance Rumici-Astragalion siculi Poli 1965, restricted to Mount Aetna, and Erysimo-Jurinetalia bocconei Brullo 1984, including two alliances: the acidophilous Armerion nebrodensis Brullo 1984 and the basiphilous Cerast…

Floristic survey of the former royal hunting reserve of Renda, near Palermo (Sicily, Italy)

2021

A mountainous area in western Sicily, where relic wood vegetation is still preserved notwithstanding past and present human pressure, is here analysed in order to prepare a checklist of its vascular flora. Field investigations allowed to compile a floristic inventory including 601 infrageneric taxa belonging to 304 genera and 80 families. Some remarks on the biological and chorological spectra are presented, and some measures to protect flora and vegetation are suggested, too.
