Orofacial dermoid cysts in pediatric patients : a review of 8 cases
2010
Objective: The aim was to analyze the clinical characteristics, treatment and outcome of 8 orofacial dermoid cysts (DC) in pediatric patients. Material and Methods: A retrospective observational study was made, reviewing the medical records with clinical diagnosis of dermoid cyst between 1987 and 2006 in the Children?s Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Hospital Universitario La Fe, Valencia, Spain. The following data were collected: sex, age, location, size and duration of the lesion, treatment, length of follow-up, and recurrence. Results: Eight patients (3 girls and 5 boys) with a mean age of 2.7 years (range 0-12 years). Four DC were located in the oral area (3 sublingual and 1 lin…
Versatility of nasolabial flaps in oral cavity reconstructions
2014
Objectives: Describe the techniques involved and the results obtained witn nasolabial flaps in small and medium- sized defects of the oral cavity. The procedure is an easy resconstructive option with a high success rate and with very good aesthetic and functional outcomes. Study Design: A retrospective analysis of 16 nasolabial flap reconstructions in 15 oncological patients with oral cavity defects undergoing single-stage surgical interventions. We evaluate the tumor type, its location, size, the resective and reconstructive techniques involved, as well as any complications. Results: Out of 15 patients, 9 were male and 6 female, with ages ranging from 60-85 years. The primary tumor was loc…
Associated factors with health-compromising behaviors among patients treated for oral cancer
2019
Background To improve eradication strategies of health-compromising behaviors between oral cancer survivors, this study aimed to explore the extent of clustering of risk behaviors and to assess possible factors associated. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out among oral cancer patients at least 6 months after treatment. They completed a questionnaire about smoking, alcohol consumption, oral hygiene habits and dental visits. Presence of clusters was evaluated through pairwise Pearson correlations and principal component analysis. Factors associated with each identified cluster were analyzed with multivariate models. Results Among 142 patients, 14.8% smoked, 51.7% cons…
Trends of mortality due to oral and oropharyngeal cancers in Uruguay from 1997 to 2014
2020
Background To analyze the trends of oral and oropharyngeal cancer mortality in Uruguay between 1997 and 2014 according to sex and age groups and its possible association with sociodemographic factors. Material and Methods A time-series ecological study using secondary data was performed. The data about mortality due to oral and oropharyngeal cancers were obtained from the Statistics Vitals Department of the Public Health Ministry of Uruguay. To estimate the mortality trends of the historical series, by sex, anatomical site and age groups, linear regressions generated by the Prais-Winsten procedure were used. Results The analysis of mortality trends for oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers …
Dental implications in oral cancer patients
2011
Objectives. A study is made of the dental implications of oral cancer, with a view to avoiding the complications that appear once oncological treatment is started. Patients and Methods. The study comprised a total of 22 patients diagnosed with oral cancer according to clinical and histological criteria in the Service of Maxxillofacial Surgery (Dental Clinic of the University of Barcelona, Spain) during the period 1996-2005, and posteriorly treated in different hospital centers in Barcelona. Results. Of the 22 patients diagnosed with oral cancer in our Service, the present study finally analyzed the 12 subjects who reported for the dental controls. As regards the remaining 10 patients, 5 had…
Complement activation product C4d in oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma
2015
OBJECTIVE: Complement C4d-containing fragments have been proposed as diagnostic markers for lung cancer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of C4d in oropharyngeal (OPSCC) and oral (OSCC) squamous cell carcinomas. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: C4d staining was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in 244 OPSCC surgical specimens. C4d levels were quantified by ELISA in resting saliva samples from 48 patients with oral leukoplakia and 62 with OSCC. Plasma samples from 21 patients with leukoplakia and 30 with oral carcinoma were also studied. RESULTS: C4d staining in OPSCC specimens was associated with nodal invasion (P = 0.001), histopathologic grade (P = 0.014), disease stage (P = 0.0…
Association between general and oral health-related quality of life in patients treated for oral cancer
2015
Background Less is known about the association between general health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and oral HRQoL (OHRQoL) among patients with specific diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the association between patient-centered outcome measurements (HRQoL and OHRQoL) of oral cancer patients at least 6 months after treatment. Material and Methods HRQoL was measured with the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12); OHRQoL was evaluated using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and the Oral Impacts on Daily Performances (OIDP). Results Higher OHRQoL scores were associated with lower SF-12 domains scores. The OHIP-14 explained 16.5 % of the total variance of SF-12 Physical C…
Oral tongue cancer in public hospitals in Madrid, Spain (1990-2008).
2015
Background The cancer which appears in the mobile portion of the tongue is the most common neoplasm of the oral cavity. The objective of this study was to analyse oral tongue cancer epidemiology in a population of 610 patients diagnosed between 1990 and 2008 and detailed in the Tumour Registry of the Madrid region. Material and Methods A retrospective analysis based on the following variables provided in the Tumour Registry was achieved: age, gender, histology, stage, location, treatment. Descriptive and analytic statistics with these variables, using Pearson’s Chi-square test to study the relationship between the qualitative variables. Results Patients’ mean age was 61.53±13.95 years, with…
Human papillomavirus in saliva of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma.
2008
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in saliva rinses of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)and to analyze the possibility of using saliva as a diagnostic method for screening high-risk patients. Study design: The saliva sample of 22 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma and 20 age-sex matched healthy controls were obtained. The presence of HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 33 was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: In 40.9% of the patients and in 25% of the controls, the saliva was shown to be positive for HPV. In 27.3% of the patients and in 20% of the controls, the saliva was shown to be positive for HP…

2011
OBJECTIVES:In this study we evaluated the possible epidemiologic changes of oral cancer patients in the Netherlands between the years 1980-1984 and 2000-2004. We specifically studied the differences in male-female ratio, age, TNM-stage, site distribution, and alcohol and tobacco use.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Patients from the VU University Medical Center with an oral squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity registered in 1980-1984 (n=200), group 1, were compared to patients registered in 2000-2004 (n=184), group 2. Trends in prevalence, site distribution, TNM-stage, alcohol and tobacco use, age and gender were studied.RESULTS:The male-female ratio has decreased from 1.8 to 1.2. There were no …
