Being Moved by Unfamiliar Sad Music Is Associated with High Empathy

The paradox of enjoying listening to music that evokes sadness is yet to be fully understood. Unlike prior studies that have explored potential explanations related to lyrics, memories, and mood regulation, we investigated the types of emotions induced by unfamiliar, instrumental sad music, and whether these responses are consistently associated with certain individual difference variables. One hundred and two participants were drawn from a representative sample to minimize self-selection bias. Isolated superior oblique palsies with electrophysiologically documented brainstem lesions

Over a 13.5-year period, we observed 10 patients with isolated superior oblique palsies in whom electrophysiological abnormalities indicated brainstem lesions. In 7 patients unilateral masseter reflex abnormalities were seen, and were located on the side of the superior oblique palsy in 2 patients and on the opposite side in 5 patients. Two patients had slowed gain of following eye movements to the side contralateral to the superior oblique palsy. Slowed adduction saccades in the eye contralateral to the superior oblique palsy were seen in 1 patient. Nitric oxide modulation of the basal ganglia circuitry: therapeutic implication for Parkinson's disease and other motor disorders.

Several recent studies have emphasized a crucial role for the nitrergic system in movement control and the pathophysiology of the basal ganglia (BG). These observations are supported by anatomical evidence demonstrating the presence of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in all the basal ganglia nuclei. In fact, nitrergic terminals have been reported to make synaptic contacts with both substantia nigra dopamine-containing neurons and their terminal areas such as the striatum, the globus pallidus and the subthalamus. GABA-A Receptors Regulate Neocortical Neuronal Migration In Vitro and In Vivo

The cortical migration process depends on a number of trophic factors and on the activation of different voltage- and ligand-gated channels. We investigated the role of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type A receptors in the neuronal migration process of the newborn rat parietal cortex in vivo and in vitro. Local in vivo application of the GABA-A antagonist bicuculline methiodide (BMI) or the agonist muscimol via cortical surface Elvax implants induced prominent alterations in the cortical architecture when compared with untreated or sham-operated controls.
