Experimental and Modeling Analyses of Human Motion Across the Static Magnetic Field of an MRI Scanner

2021

It is established that human movements in the vicinity of a permanent static magnetic field, such as those in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners induce electric fields in the human body; this raises potential severe risks of health to radiographers and cleaners exposed routinely to these fields in MRI rooms. The relevant directives and parameters, however, are based on theoretical models, and accurate studies on the simulation of the effects based on human movement data obtained in real conditions are still lacking. Two radiographers and one cleaner, familiar with MRI room activities and these directives, were gait analyzed during the execution of routine job motor tasks at different…

A real-time webcam based Eye Ball Tracking System using MATLAB

2015

Eye Ball Tracking System is a device which is intended to assist patients that cannot perform any voluntary tasks related to daily life. Patients who only can control their eyes can still communicate with the real-world using the assistive devices like one proposed in this paper. This device provides a human computer interface in order to take decisions based on their eye movement. A real time data stream is captured via webcam that transfers data serially to MATLAB. Then a sequential image processing scheme segments the iris of the eye and calculates the centroid, thereby generating control signal with the help of a reference axis. The control signals are then used to manipulate the positi…

Survey data on the consequences of COVID-19 and home confinement on the educational community and families in Spain

2021

[EN] This paper presents a dataset concerning the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and home confinement on the educational community and families, and the possibilities and opportunities for the return to schools. Data were collected through an online based cross-sectional survey between June 29, 2020 and July 12, 2020 in Spain. A total of 7,305 people who had children in their care during the COVID-19 crisis and the home-confinement period responded to the survey. The survey contained items concerning (i) socio-demographic information, (ii) conciliation of work, personal and family life during confinement, (iii) the impact of the pandemic on the respondent's family, and (iv) the respo…

L’écriture et le graphisme à l’ère de la linguistique psychologique

2016

This study deals with the conception of “writing” within the German humanities during the « psychological turn » of the last half of the XIXth - the beginning of the XXth centuries. The focal point is “graphism” and “writing” understood as “expressive movements” (Ausdrucksbewegungen), this notion being bound to the concept of “verbal gesture” within the trend of “psychological linguistics” (1850-1930). Inspired initially by the morphological and physiognomonic tradition (J. Lavater, J. W. Goethe, J. Engel, C. Carus, Th. Piderit), this conception considers language as a particular kind of “expressive movements”. This vision comes back to the German psychology of consciousness elaborated by J…

Self-organization of active particles by quorum sensing rules

2018

Many microorganisms regulate their behaviour according to the density of neighbours. Such quorum sensing is important for the communication and organisation within bacterial populations. In contrast to living systems, where quorum sensing is determined by biochemical processes, the behaviour of synthetic active particles can be controlled by external fields. Accordingly they allow to investigate how variations of a density-dependent particle response affect their self-organisation. Here we experimentally and numerically demonstrate this concept using a suspension of light-activated active particles whose motility is individually controlled by an external feedback-loop, realised by a particl…

The use of sonification for physiotherapy in human movement tasks: A scoping review

2020

Objectives: This review aims to: (1) map the use of sonification in human movement tasks for physical therapy; (2) identify methods of data capture, tasks and its effects on human subjects; (3) suggest future research directions. News: Sonification can be described as a technique to translate data into sound. It has been used for human motion analysis tasks even if it is not part of most physical therapist's lexicon. Prospects and projects: Identify and analyze publications where sonification was used as an audio-feedback technique for physical therapy. Thirty-five papers were included, 13 randomized-control-trials. Thirteen papers reported an investigation on a specific dysfunction, while …

Submerged speleothems and sea level reconstructions: a global overview and new results from the Mediterranean Sea

2021

This study presents a global overview of the submerged speleothems used to reconstruct paleo sea levels and reports new results from two stalactites collected in the Mediterranean Sea. Coastal cave deposits significantly contributed to the understanding of global and regional sea-level variations during the Middle and Late Quaternary. The studied speleothems cover the last 1.4 Myr and focused mainly on Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 1, 2, 3, 5.1, 5.3, 5.5, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 7.5. The results indicate that submerged speleothems represent extraordinary archives that can provide detailed information on former sea-level changes. The two stalactites collected in the central Mediterranean Sea, at Fa…

Consumer Demand for Environmental, Social, and Ethical Information in Fishery and Aquaculture Product Labels

2022

[EN] Customers' attention to sustainability labels in fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs) has been increasing in the last decades, and the industry has adapted to this growing interest by adopting fish ecolabels. However, there is a growing interest to widen the sustainability concept to include the social and ethical information of the fishery and aquaculture industry and to go further from the voluntary approach on the labeling of these aspects in FAPs. For this reason, using data from 2021 Eurobarometer and using machine learning techniques, we disentangle the characteristics of the FAP buyers that consider the importance of environmental impact, ethical, and social information appea…

When the brain goes diving: glial oxidative metabolism may confer hypoxia tolerance to the seal brain.

2009

Deep diving mammals have developed strategies to cope with limited oxygen availability when submerged. These adaptations are associated with an increased neuronal hypoxia tolerance. Brain neurons of the hooded seal Cysto- phora cristata remain much longer active in hypoxic condi- tions than those of mice. To understand the cellular basis of neuronal hypoxia tolerance, we studied neuroglobin and cy- tochrome c in C. cristata brain. Neuroglobin, a respiratory protein typically found in vertebrate neurons, displays three unique amino acid substitutions in hooded seal. However, these substitutions unlikely contribute to a modulation of O2 affinity. Moreover, there is no significant difference i…
