Groove as a multidimensional participatory experience
2023
Groove is a popular and widely used concept in the field of music. Yet, its precise definition remains elusive. Upon closer inspection, groove appears to be used as an umbrella term with various connotations depending on the musical era, the musical context, and the individual using the term. Our aim in this article was to explore different definitions and connotations of the term groove so as to reach a more detailed understanding of it. Consequently, in an online survey, 88 participants provided free-text descriptions of the term groove. A thematic analysis revealed that groove is a multifaceted phenomenon, and participants’ descriptions fit into two main categories: music- and experience…
Analysis of corporal gestures in dance students’ improvisations as a response to controlled musical parameters
2009
This study addresses the lack of a theoretical basis in dance piano accompaniment music geared towards dance. We study which musical features are perceptually most relevant and prompt specific dance movements and gestures, particularly in academic dance.11 musical pieces using an academic style (duration approximately 30s) were composed for the experiment and recorded on a piano. The pieces varied along 6 musical features: mode, tempo, time signature, intensity, anacrusis and syncopation. For each video-recorded improvisation, we analyzed the performance of movement and gesture types. One-way ANOVAs were performed taking each musical feature as a factor and each movement as a dependent vari…
Fatigue-Related and Timescale-Dependent Changes in Individual Movement Patterns Identified Using Support Vector Machine
2020
The scientific and practical fields—especially high-performance sports—increasingly request a stronger focus be placed on individual athletes in human movement science research. Machine learning methods have shown efficacy in this context by identifying the unique movement patterns of individuals and distinguishing their intra-individual changes over time. The objective of this investigation is to analyze biomechanically described movement patterns during the fatigue-related accumulation process within a single training session of a high number of repeated executions of a ballistic sports movement—specifically, the frontal foot kick (mae-geri) in karate—in expert athletes. The two leading r…
Wkład Wielkopolan w edukację ludności górnośląskiej w XIX i XX stuleciu
2017
For the history of development of the Polish movement in Upper Silesia, the aid which inhabitants of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) extended to Upper Silesians, beginning with the mid-19th century until the Interwar period, was of great import_ance. The former, coming from the lower middle-class (petit bourgeois) and intelligentsia backgrounds, got interested in Silesia in the time of the Spring of Nations. In the second half of the 19th century, their support for Silesia became strengthened, sińce they began settling down in this region. They arrived in this Province to take professional work and carry out nationalistic activity among the population living here. Their cooperation was realiz…
Hot or Not? Personality and attraction on the dance floor
2012
Previous research has shown that personality plays a significant role in interpersonal attraction. We took this issue to the dance floor, and investigated how personality characteristics of both observers and dancers affect the former’s attractiveness ratings of the latter. Sixty-two heterosexual adult participants watched 48 short audio-visual point-light animations of eight male and eight female adults dancing to Techno, Pop, and Latin music. Participants rated perceived skill of each dancer, and the likelihood with which they would go on a date with them. Both dancers’ and observers’ personality characteristics were assessed using the Big Five Inventory. Multivariate analyses of variance…
I paesaggi digitali dell'immaginazione
2014
Politicisation of Travelling : Interrail and Freedom
2020
Travelling is today an important aspect of the European political agenda-setting of both individual actors and institutions. The paradigms of car and air travel are contested in terms of climate change; I continue the contestation from the perspective of political liberty. Three paradigms of personal travel – by car, by flight and by train – are confronted with two concepts of liberty: the freedom from interference versus the freedom from dependence. Three ideal types of travel – travelling to, travelling away and travelling around – are judged from the perspective of the two freedoms. Train travel by Interrail is a political innovation that links the freedom of movement to the freedom from…

Kosola was a political speaker and the figurehead of the Patriotic people’s movement (IKL) founded in 1932. The Study focuses on Kosola’s speeches applying rhetorical-semantic concept analysis with regard to the changes occurring in the main concepts. Changes in the speeches are used to explore the concepts of democracy and application of the law in Finl…
Playing with delayed auditory feedback
2009
This paper presents a study where the effect of a delayed acoustic feedback is researched with 10 professional musicians performing four different pieces of piano music. The influence of a delayed auditory feedback on the performance is quantified using both MIDI information and the measurement of the movement of the upper body of the pianists. Four conditions were examined namely: a normal piano performance, a performance without acoustic feedback and two conditions with a delayed acoustic feedback of 300ms and 200ms respectively. The analysis of the MIDI data shows a significant increase in both the velocity of the keystrokes and the duration of the performance in the delayed conditions. …
