Evolution of Digital Innovations Based on Entrepreneurial Opportunities
2019
Digital innovations evolve unpredictable as the characteristics of digital technology provide diverse opportunities for entrepreneurs. The flexible, malleable, and unbounded nature of digital technologies makes the evolution process unpredictable as entrepreneurs can rarely estimate beforehand how new digital technologies might impact the evolution process. It is also hard to predict how customers will react to the changes enabled by digital technologies. In this longitudinal case study, we were interested in different competitive moves that entrepreneurs apply to effectuate changes in the evolutionary pathway of digital innovations. Further, we were fascinated by how the evolution of digit…
Task-oriented reading efficiency : interplay of general cognitive ability, task demands, strategies and reading fluency
2022
AbstractThe associations among readers’ cognitive skills (general cognitive ability, reading skills, and attentional functioning), task demands (easy versus difficult questions), and process measures (total fixation time on relevant and irrelevant paragraphs) was investigated to explain task-oriented reading accuracy and efficiency (number of scores in a given time unit). Structural equation modeling was applied to a large dataset collected with sixth-grade students, which included samples of dysfluent readers and those with attention difficulties. The results are in line with previous findings regarding the dominant role of general cognitive ability in the accuracy of task-oriented reading…
Reading Difficulties Identification : A Comparison of Neural Networks, Linear, and Mixture Models
2022
Purpose We aim to identify the most accurate model for predicting adolescent (Grade 9) reading difficulties (RD) in reading fluency and reading comprehension using 17 kindergarten-age variables. Three models (neural networks, linear, and mixture) were compared based on their accuracy in predicting RD. We also examined whether the same or a different set of kindergarten-age factors emerge as the strongest predictors of reading fluency and comprehension difficulties across the models. Method RD were identified in a Finnish sample (N ≈ 2,000) based on Grade 9 difficulties in reading fluency and reading comprehension. The predictors assessed in kindergarten included gender, parental factors (e.…
Aberrant brain functional networks in type 2 diabetes mellitus: A graph theoretical and support-vector machine approach
2022
ObjectiveType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a high risk of cognitive decline and dementia, but the underlying mechanisms are not yet clearly understood. This study aimed to explore the functional connectivity (FC) and topological properties among whole brain networks and correlations with impaired cognition and distinguish T2DM from healthy controls (HC) to identify potential biomarkers for cognition abnormalities.MethodsA total of 80 T2DM and 55 well-matched HC were recruited in this study. Subjects’ clinical data, neuropsychological tests and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired. Whole-brain network FC were mapped, the topological characteristics were ana…
Social bonding happens in time : interpersonal synchronisation in the silent disco
2017
Dance is a fundamentally social activity. Studies have begun to examine the role of movement in music for conveying emotional states, potentially revealing a useful mechanism for the communication of emotions, while other studies have found that joint synchrony increases interpersonal affiliation. However, music and movement studies have focused on individuals and comparatively few studies have involved multiple simultaneous participants. The aim of the proposed research is to examine the importance of synchrony in a dance setting for building interpersonal affiliation. This was tested using a Silent Disco scenario, in which participants heard the music in slightly different timing to each …
Koneoppimisen hyödyntäminen konenäössä
2016
Konenäön hyödyntäminen yleistyy ja sitä mukaa myös konenäön ongelmat monimutkaistuvat. Yksi suosittu tapa ratkaista näitä ongelmia on hyödyntää koneoppimista. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan miten koneoppimista hyödynnetään konenäössä ja vertaillaan eri koneoppimisalgoritmeja konenäön näkökulmasta. omputer Vision faces increasing challenges as its used more. Common way to solve these complex problems is to use Machine Learning. In this thesis workings of different Machine Learing algorithms are looked on and their advantages and disadvantages are compared.
Race, Environment, and Crisis : Hurricane Camille and the Politics of Southern Segregation
2022
In August 1969 Hurricane Camille hit the Mississippi coast. We argue that the disaster caused by the Hurricane was an outcome of the entanglement between human and non-human agents. As a non-human agent, Hurricane Camille thrust the prevailing socio-economic situation in the segregationist South into the spotlight, with all its political and cultural ramifications – much to the annoyance of the local political elite that had long sought to isolate southern politics from civil rights and the desegregation agenda. Consequently, it (re)invigorated and furnished the civil rights movement and the politics defining that era with new arguments and approaches that would have been impossible to dev…
Coordinate Globally, Serve Locally
2020
What would a desirable and viable global organization of progressive movements look like in the context of the historical conjuncture of crises-ridden capitalism? I propose here a reorientation of progressive politics that are attuned to both the fundamentals of structural change and the basic daily needs of human beings. nonPeerReviewed
A Historical Analysis of Media Practices and Technologies in Protest Movements : A Review of Crisis and Critique by Anne Kaun
2017
Dr. Anne Kaun’s book, Crisis and Critique: A Brief History of Media Participation in Times of Crisis (London: Zed Books, 2016, 131 pp., ISBN: 978-1-78360-736-5), is a concise but comprehensive analysis of the changing media practices and technologies in protest movements. The book overviews the topic within the context of major economic crises and scrutinises three richly detailed case studies in the United States: (a) the unemployed workers’ movement during the Great Depression in the 1930s, (b) the tenants’ rent strike movement of the early 1970s, and (c) the Occupy Wall Street movement following the Great Recession of 2008. Kaun begins her book with an introduction t…
NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE DOCUMENTATION AND PRESERVATION OF THE MAYA CULTURAL HERITAGE. THE PALACE OF THE GOVERNOR AT UXMAL (YUCATÁN, MEXICO)
2020
[EN] One of the major challenges currently facing the architectural and archaeological heritage in subtropical World Heritage sites is its preventive conservation. Many of these sites are vulnerable to the adverse impacts of natural disasters and climate change. The risk is compounded by the fact that several of them are among the most iconic places in the world, and so they also face the threat of the excessive growth of visitors. What is more, in earlier times many were restored with unsuitable materials or using inappropriate techniques which have heightened the risk they face today. However, thanks to the new digital technologies of architectural documentation involving the use of laser…
