The present study was designed to examine, whether, effluents from a modern pulp and paper mill using elemental chlorine-free/total chlorine-free (ECF/TCF) bleaching, exert effects on the immune system of fish and, in addition, to relate these findings to physiological parameters known to be affected by bleached kraft-mill effluents (BKME). Roach (Rutilus rutilus) were exposed in laboratory conditions to primary- or secondary-treated effluent from a pulp and paper mill. Long-term pair bonds occur in diverse animal taxa, but they are most common in birds, and can last from a few years to a lifetime. In many of these species, after the reproductive season, birds migrate to distant nonbreeding grounds where they remain for several months, and until recently, little was known about whether partners maintain contact during migration. This gap in knowledge was primarily due to past methodological difficulties in tracking long-term, large-scale movements of individuals. Synthesis and Supramolecular Association of Immobilized NCN-Pincer Platinum(II) Complexes on Hyperbranched Polyglycerol Supports

Pertosylation of hyperbranched polyglycerol (M(n)=2000; M(w)/M(n)=1.3) followed by partial displacement of the tosyl groups with carboxylic acid functionalized NCN-pincer platinum(II) complexes [PtI-2,6-(NMe(2)CH(2))(2)C(6)H(2)-4-COOH], resulted in covalent attachment of the NCN-pincer complexes to the polyglycerol. These functionalized hyperbranched macromolecules have been characterized by (1)H, (13)C, and (195)Pt NMR, UV-visible, and IR spectroscopy. The presence of Pt and I atoms renders them directly visible by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) without staining procedures, which offers images of associated hyperbranched macromolecules. Glycine receptors influence radial migration in the embryonic mouse neocortex.

To investigate whether glycine receptors influence radial migration in the neocortex, we analyzed the effect of glycine and the glycinergic antagonist strychnine, on the distribution of 5-bromo-2'deoxyuridine-labeled neurons in organotypic slice cultures from embryonic mice cortices. Application of glycine impeded radial migration only in the presence of the glycine-transport blockers, ALX-5407 and ALX-1393. This effect was blocked by the specific glycine receptor antagonist strychnine, whereas application of strychnine in the absence of glycine was without effect. Hand trajectories of vertical arm movements in one- G and zero- G environments

The purpose of the present experiment was to study the way in which the central nervous system (CNS), represents gravitational force during vertical arm pointing movements. Movements in upward (against gravity) and downward (with gravity) directions, with two different mass loads (hand empty and with a hand-held 0.5-kg weight) were executed by eight subjects in a normal gravitational environment. Movements by two cosmonauts, in the two directions, were also tested in a state of weightlessness. Analyses focused upon finger trajectories in the saggital plane. Adiabatic invariants drive rhythmic human motion in variable gravity.

Voluntary human movements are stereotyped. When modeled in the framework of classical mechanics they are expected to minimize cost functions that may include energy, a natural candidate from a physiological point of view also. In time-changing environments, however, energy is no longer conserved---regardless of frictional energy dissipation---and it is therefore not the preferred candidate for any cost function able to describe the subsequent changes in motor strategies.
