In-vivo effects of flapless osteopuncture-facilitated tooth movement in the maxilla and the mandible.
2018
Background This study aimed to investigate the effects of a minimally invasive, flapless procedure to enhance tooth movement in both jaws and to determine whether this triggers the acceleration when repeated monthly. Material and methods The sample consisted of thirty-two individuals whose orthodontic treatment required canine retraction. They were divided into an experimental group and control group. Osteopunctures were performed using orthodontic mini-screws at the distal aspects of the canine teeth at the beginning and on the fourth week of distalization in the experimental group. The control group was treated with conventional mechanics. All canines were retracted. The rates of canine d…
Rates of tooth movement and bone remodeling activity : self-ligating versus conventional brackets
2019
Background Bracket systems have been developed with the purpose of reducing frictional resistance between the archwire and accessories. The aim of this research was to compare rates of tooth movement and regions of cellular bone modeling activity along tooth root surfaces of teeth moved with conventional vs. self-ligating brackets. Material and Methods The experiments were conducted in 20 male dogs. Bands were cemented in all intermediate incisors, with conventional brackets (Morelli) on the right side and hybrid self-ligating ones (T3-American Orthodontics) on the left side. A 0.019” x 0.025” stainless steel wire was inserted passively in the slot of these brackets with chain elastics (250…
Dentoalveolar changes in adults promoted by the use of auxiliary expansion arch: A CBCT study
2019
Background The objective of this study was to evaluate the dentoalveolar effects and the changes of buccal cortical bone in the posterior area after expansion obtained with TMA auxiliary expansion arch in adult patients. Material and Methods A retrospective analysis of CT scans of 13 patients (6 male, 7 female) treated at a private clinic, taken immediately before and after the use of an auxiliary expansion archwire, was performed. Mean age at installation of TMA auxiliary expansion arch was 29.23 years (s.d.=9.13) and the mean age when the auxiliary arch was removed was 29.52 years (s.d.=9.16). Mean time of the use of the TMA auxiliary expansion arch was 0.29 years (s.d.=0.09). The patient…
Fetal Calf Serum-Free Generation of Functionally Active Murine Dendritic Cells Suitable for In Vivo Therapeutic Approaches
2000
Standard protocols to generate mouse dendritic cells (DC) generally use culture medium supplemented with fetal calf serum; however, reinjection in vivo of DC cultured in fetal calf serum results in priming to xenogeneic proteins that clearly limits the use of such DC. We therefore established a fetal calf serum-free culture system for the generation of murine DC from bone marrow precursors. DC can be generated fetal calf serum-free using RPMI supplemented with 1.5% syngeneic mouse serum. Although the yield of DC grown under fetal calf serum-free conditions was somewhat lower than that of the standard culture, large numbers of DC could be generated without the exposure to xenogeneic proteins…
The Wnt/beta-Catenin Pathway Attenuates Experimental Allergic Airway Disease
2014
Abstract Signaling via the Wnt/β-catenin pathway plays crucial roles in embryogenesis and homeostasis of adult tissues. In the lung, the canonical Wnt/β-catenin pathway has been implicated in remodeling processes, development of emphysema, and fibrosis. However, its relevance for the modulation of allergic responses in the lung remains unclear. Using genetically modified mice with lung-specific inducible (doxycycline) Wnt-1 expression (CCSP-rtTA × tetO-Wnt1), the impact of Wnt on the development of allergic airway disease was analyzed. Overexpression of Wnt during the allergen challenge phase attenuated the development of airway inflammation in an acute model, as well as in a more therapeut…
Training During the COVID-19 Lockdown: Knowledge, Beliefs, and Practices of 12,526 Athletes from 142 Countries and Six Continents
2021
Abstract Objective Our objective was to explore the training-related knowledge, beliefs, and practices of athletes and the influence of lockdowns in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Methods Athletes (n = 12,526, comprising 13% world class, 21% international, 36% national, 24% state, and 6% recreational) completed an online survey that was available from 17 May to 5 July 2020 and explored their training behaviors (training knowledge, beliefs/attitudes, and practices), including specific questions on their training intensity, frequency, and session duration before and during lockdown (March–Jun…

The beatles: tradition, avant-garde... and expressiveness
2019
Isolated superior oblique palsies with electrophysiologically documented brainstem lesions
2000
Over a 13.5-year period, we observed 10 patients with isolated superior oblique palsies in whom electrophysiological abnormalities indicated brainstem lesions. In 7 patients unilateral masseter reflex abnormalities were seen, and were located on the side of the superior oblique palsy in 2 patients and on the opposite side in 5 patients. Two patients had slowed gain of following eye movements to the side contralateral to the superior oblique palsy. Slowed adduction saccades in the eye contralateral to the superior oblique palsy were seen in 1 patient. Clinical improvement was frequently (in 7 of 10 patients) associated with improvement or normalization of electrophysiologic findings. Magneti…
