Directional motion: An empirically based model of development in educational institutions

Although the quantity of literature on organizational sustainability in the realm of education represents a well-developed research area, the literature in this field does not sufficiently emphasize the notion of directional motion as important to institutional change. The aim of this work is the attempt to propose an empirically based model of ‘directional motion’ that is based on the intrinsically motivating process of experiencing movement. Polyglutamine toxicity induces rod photoreceptor division, morphological transformation or death in Spinocerebellar ataxia 7 mouse retina

In neurodegenerative disorders caused by polyglutamine (polyQ) expansion, polyQ toxicity is thought to trigger a linear cascade of successive degenerative events leading to neuronal death. To understand how neurons cope with polyQ toxicity, we studied a Spinocerebellar ataxia 7 (SCA7) mouse which expresses polyQ-expanded ATXN7 only in rod photoreceptors. We show that in response to polyQ toxicity, SCA7 rods go through a range of radically different cell fates, including apoptotic and non-apoptotic cell death, cell migration, morphological transformation into a round cell or, most remarkably, cell division. Control of Programmed Cell Death by Distinct Electrical Activity Patterns

Electrical activity and sufficient supply with survival factors play a major role in the control of apoptosis in the developing cortex. Coherent high-frequency neuronal activity, which efficiently releases neurotrophins, is essential for the survival of immature neurons. We studied the influence of neuronal activity on apoptosis in the developing cortex. Dissociated cultures of the newborn mouse cerebral cortex were grown on multielectrode arrays to determine the activity patterns that promote neuronal survival. Optogenetically Controlled Activity Pattern Determines Survival Rate of Developing Neocortical Neurons

A substantial proportion of neurons undergoes programmed cell death (apoptosis) during early development. This process is attenuated by increased levels of neuronal activity and enhanced by suppression of activity. To uncover whether the mere level of activity or also the temporal structure of electrical activity affects neuronal death rates, we optogenetically controlled spontaneous activity of synaptically-isolated neurons in developing cortical cultures. Conformational clamping by a membrane ligand activates the EphA2 receptor

AbstractThe EphA2 receptor is a promising drug target for cancer treatment, since EphA2 activation can inhibit metastasis and tumor progression. It has been recently described that the TYPE7 peptide activates EphA2 using a novel mechanism that involves binding to the single transmembrane domain of the receptor. Proteomic identification of the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K as irradiation responsive protein related to migration

Abstract Irradiation resistance is a major obstacle of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) therapy, limiting treatment success and patient survival. The aim of our experiments was to identify irradiation-regulated proteins as potential drug targets. Two established HNSCC cell lines (HNSCCUM-01T and HNSCCUM-02T) were treated with a single 8 Gy (Gray) fraction of irradiation. Changes in cellular protein expression were studied after 24 h by means of 2D-electrophoresis and MALDI–TOF-mass spectrometry. Ninety-four differentially expressed proteins were identified. Integrative genomic and proteomic analyses identify targets for Lkb1 deficient metastatic lung tumors

SummaryIn mice, Lkb1 deletion and activation of KrasG12D results in lung tumors with a high penetrance of lymph node and distant metastases. We analyzed these primary and metastatic de novo lung cancers with integrated genomic and proteomic profiles, and have identified gene and phosphoprotein signatures associated with Lkb1 loss and progression to invasive and metastatic lung tumors. These studies revealed that SRC is activated in Lkb1-deficient primary and metastatic lung tumors, and that the combined inhibition of SRC, PI3K, and MEK1/2 resulted in synergistic tumor regression. Comparative Proteome Profiling and Functional Analysis of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Cell Lines

The aim of the present study was the molecular profiling of different Ph+ chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) cell lines (LAMA84, K562, and KCL22) by a proteomic approach. By employing two-dimensional gel electrophoresis combined with mass spectrometry analysis, we have identified 191 protein spots corresponding to 142 different proteins. Among these, 63% were cancer-related proteins and 74% were described for the first time in leukemia cells. Multivariate analysis highlighted significant differences in the global proteomic profile of the three CML cell lines.
