Modulatory effects of the serotonergic and histaminergic systems on reaction to light in the crustacean Gammarus pulex
2013
Serotonin modulates reaction to light in many animals. In the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex, exogenous administration of serotonin induces a transient reversal of photic behaviour from strong photophobia to photophily. We have elucidated further the neuromodulation of photic behaviour in G. pulex by using in vivo pharmacology and behavioural testing. Using several mammalian 5-HT receptor antagonists and agonists, we provide evidence for a role of serotonin receptors in the 5-HT-dependent regulation of G. pulex photic behaviour, possibly involving 5-HTR2 subtype. Serotonin-induced photophily was blocked by the 5-HT receptor antagonists, mianserin, cyproheptadine, and ritanserin, but not…
Genetic structure in the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica: disentangling past vicariance events from contemporary patterns of gene flow
2010
The Mediterranean Sea is a two-basin system, with the boundary zone restricted to the Strait of Sicily and the narrow Strait of Messina. Two main population groups are recognized in the Mediterranean endemic seagrass Posidonia oceanica, corresponding to the Western and the Eastern basins. To address the nature of the East-West cleavage in P. oceanica, the main aims of this study were: (i) to define the genetic structure within the potential contact zone (i.e. the Strait of Sicily) and clarify the extent of gene flow between the two population groups, and (ii) to investigate the role of present water circulation patterns vs. past evolutionary events on the observed genetic pattern. To achiev…
SOMATOTOPIC ORGANIZATION OF THE CRANIAL NERVE NUCLEI INVOLVED IN EYE MOVEMENTS: III, IV, VI.
2017
The oculomotor nucleus is divided into: 1. somatic medial column innervating the superior rectus muscle and somatic lateral column, further subdivided into a lateral column innervating the inferior rectus, inferior oblique and medial rectus muscles; 2. central nucleus innervating the levator palpebrae superioris muscle; 3. visceral nucleus innervating the pupillary sphincter muscle, consisting of the following two groups of neurons: cholinergic, preganglionic neurons supplying the ciliary ganglion, termed the Edinger- Westphal preganglionic (EWpg) neuron population, and the centrally projecting, peptidergic neurons, termed the Edinger-Westphal centrally projecting (EWcp) population. A detai…
NEOTECTONIC ACTIVITY AND EMISSION OF FLUIDS IN THE NORTHWEST SICILY CHANNEL
The southern Sicilian coast represents an important contribution to Italian tourism, the Sicily Channel is an important communication path because at the top of its seafloor there are many pipelines, and submarine communication cables which are laid to carry signals, and which are very important to the minor islands. In this work, we are presenting results of the detailed geomorphological and seismostratigraphic analysis based on new very high-resolution dataset (multibeam and CHIRP) acquired during the ACUSCAL 2015 Cruise. We also used low resolution bathymetric and seismic data provided from online database (ViDEPI, GEBCO, EMODnet). This study allows us to reconstruct the tectonic volcani…
The submerged structure and stratal architecture of the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) caldera, offshore the Campi Flegrei, (Eastern Tyrrhenian Margin)…
2012
The Campi Flegrei is an active volcanic area defined by a quasi-circular depression that covers some 200 km2 of the coastal zone of SW Italy, a large part of which develops off the Naples (Pozzuoli) Bay (Fig. 1). The area has been active at least since 60 ka BP ( Pappalardo et al., 1999), and is structurally dominated by a caldera, 6 km in diameter, associated with the eruption of the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT), a 40 km3 Dense Rock Equivalent (DRE) ignimbrite (Scarpati et al., 1993) dated at ca 15 ka BP (Deino et al., 2004), that covered the district now occupied by the city of Naples, the Campi Flegrei and a large area of the continental shelf off the Pozzuoli Bay. The volcanological evo…
Graphic Aalysis of the Project Kina by Teresa Zarnowerowna, 1926
2018
Talking about the cultural and artistic renewal in the postwar Poland one links the issue on the creation of the new generation of architects, artists, sculptors, filmmakers and poets who, coming from easteurope areas enriched by new culture of Cubism, Constructivism, Suprematism became pioneers of an eclectic culture. Among main objectives there was that of broadcasting a multiplicity of groundbreaking ideas giving shape to an artistic attitude toward the image rebuilt acconrding to the new vision, which was totally expressed at the First Exhibition of New Art in Vilnius in 1923. It was a turning point for that avantguard combined with architecture, which played a relevant role, in some ca…
Immagini di una città possibile
2014
As it’s well know, the «architectures in the drawer», drawings that are in the archives and have not taken shape are real cultural gauge of their period. We can often find representations of projects in order to city spaces transformations, old town renovation plans and new urban environments. These projects, if realized, would have modified the city offering a new urban images. The digital model, when it’s between History and Representation, it’s the catalyst of the representation; it is the starting point for the construction of new images of ‘possible’ cities which we want. We have produced new images of Olivella quarter in Palermo, placed on the edge of old town (now has gone poor becau…
Eileen Gray: lo spirito plastico di un disegno sfuggente
2013
The article offers a study about the artistic and eccentric personality of Eileen Gray, the Irish designer and architect. An independent, elusive, secretive figure, that with her creative instinct absorbed the French capital becoming soon, between 1910 and 1920, one of the leading exponents of the new revolutionary theories on design and architecture. Her thoughts took shape through drawings and models with which assumed full control of the material used and her notes, strictly in French, supported the rigor and the harmony of her projects, which made it possible to define her one of the pioneers of the Modern Movement.
Exploiting Visual Saliency Algorithms for Object-Based Attention: A New Color and Scale-Based Approach
2017
Visual Saliency aims to detect the most important regions of an image from a perceptual point of view. More in detail, the goal of Visual Saliency is to build a Saliency Map revealing the salient subset of a given image by analyzing bottom-up and top-down factors of Visual Attention. In this paper we proposed a new method for Saliency detection based on colour and scale analysis, extending our previous work based on SIFT spatial density inspection. We conducted several experiments to study the relationships between saliency methods and the object attention processes and we collected experimental data by tracking the eye movements of thirty viewers in the first three seconds of observation o…
