2023

The article deals with the notion of personal freedom as it is regulated by art. 13 of Italian Constitution, drawing the main differences with other fundamental rights, in particular with the freedom of movement (art. 16 Cost.). To this end, the paper explores the main doctrinal orientations and the most recent constitutional case-law on the subject; specifically, it proposes a reading of the motivational points of the judgment n. 127 of 2022 of the Italian Constitutional Court which resolved some touchy issues of constitutionality that arose during the pandemic emergency. In conclusion, the text questions, with a look at the near future, on the usability of traditional tools for the protec…

Five Years of the Citizens Directive in the UK - Part 2

2011

This two-part article reviews how the UK authorities have fared in the practical application of Directive 2004/38/EC in the five years since it entered into force. It identifies and examines the most common problems faced by EU citizens when seeking to have their rights recognised by the UK authorities applying the Immigration (European Economic Area) Regulations 2006 by reference to questions and complaints received by Your Europe Advice. In examining the experience of EU citizens and their family members living in the UK, account is taken of a number of recent judgments of the European Court of Justice concerning EU citizenship, including Metock, Lassal, Eman & Sevinger and Ruiz Zambrano.…

Il pensiero politico sunnita contemporaneo: Salafismo e islamismo

2017

Spectres of the Common: The 'Italian Theatre Spring' in the Context of Global Social Movements

Teatro Valle Occupato, MACAO Milan, ASILO Naples – since 2011 Italy has been overwhelmed by a wave of protests in which creatives, art workers and political activists have occupied theatre houses and other public buildings to fight social and economic precarisation of cultural labour and to struggle for a deeper institutional and social-political change. Through their simple physical presence, numerous artistic, social and institutional interventions as well as a well-thought-out and virally spread discourse, the “Italian Theatre Spring” has developed a critique of the contemporary amalgam of neoliberalism and representative democracy from the viewpoint of theatre. Enhancing the experimenta…

"Un'epoca di servitù e abiezione". Il viceregno spagnolo nelle pagine della storiografia siciliana dell'Ottocento.

2009

This essay analyses certain passages by the 19th century Sicilian historiography on the Spanish vice-reign in the island where the main tendency was the anti-Spanish movement. The joint opinion of the historians, here analyzed, consisted of a great love for their country based on a nostalgic cult of its indipendent reign and its institutions. The latter were a constant reason of consolation compared to the present reality, which seemed very disappointing and awkward if compared with the "mythical" previos ages. Scrofani, Palmeri, Lanza di Scordia and La Lumia are the historians considered in the essay: their works remain some of the most significant of the century historiography in defining…

2021

This chapter aims to reconstruct the history of the political mobilization of Italian women. It focuses on the movement that from the early Seventies involved women active in Sicilian women's associations, political parties, and trade unions and, with them, militants who did not belong to any organization. In particular, the essay analyses the role played by the Italian Communist Party in introducing Italian women to the political arena of democratic Italy. In Sicily, one of the results of this mass mobilization and political participation was the political institutionalization into the Sicilian Regional Women's Council, established on 7 May 1977 with regional law number 272. In this contex…

2014

The article focuses on the double role of Giuseppe Toniolo as economist and promoter of the Catholic movement, dealing with one of his successful initiatives: ‘La Settimana sociale dei cattolici italiani’. The essay describes the project that aimed to popularize the Catholic social doctrine and that during its first years (1907-1908) resulted in three great meetings held in Pistoia, Brescia and Palermo. These events, that required a lot of work to Toniolo as scholar and leader of Catholic associations, met a great number of obstacles of political nature and, also of intellectual, doctrinal and regional origin.

Volatility co-movements: a time scale decomposition analysis

2013

In this paper we investigate short-run co-movements before and after the Lehman Brothers’ collapse among the volatility series of US and a number of European countries. The series under investigation (implied and realized volatility) exhibit long-memory and, in order to avoid missspecification errors related to the parameterization of a long memory multivariate model, we rely on wavelet analysis. More specifically, we retrieve the time series of wavelet coefficients for each volatility series for high frequency scales, using the Maximal Overlapping Discrete Wavelet transform and we apply Maximum Likelihood for a factor decomposition of the short-run covariance matrix. The empirical evidence…
