Effects of movement direction upon kinematic characteristics of vertical arm pointing movements in man

Vertical arm pointing movements in two directions (upwards and downwards), imposing two different loads (unload and 0.5 kg) and speeds (normal and fast) have been studied in six subjects. Movements were recorded using an optoelectronic system. Data analysis concentrated upon finger-tip kinematics. Significant effects of movement direction were recorded upon velocity profiles. The acceleration time, computed relative to total movement time, was greater for downward movements than for upward movements. In contrast however, no effects of load or speed were observed. Evidence of a preprogrammed deactivation of the hamstring muscles for triggering rapid changes of posture in humans

Normal subjects were asked to make rapid flexions of the legs from a stationary initial standing posture in a self-paced mode. Because this movement implicates a rapid change in posture, questions were asked about the type of central command which must include the rupture of the erect posture and the accomplishment of the goal directed movement. Task-Modulated Corticocortical Synchrony in the Cognitive-Motor Network Supporting Handwriting

Abstract Both motor and cognitive aspects of behavior depend on dynamic, accurately timed neural processes in large-scale brain networks. Here, we studied synchronous interplay between cortical regions during production of cognitive-motor sequences in humans. Specifically, variants of handwriting that differed in motor variability, linguistic content, and memorization of movement cues were contrasted to unveil functional sensitivity of corticocortical connections. Does order and timing in performance of imagined and actual movements affect the motor imagery process? The duration of walking and writing task.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects on the duration of imagined movements of changes in timing and order of performance of actual and imagined movement. Two groups of subjects had to actually execute and imagine a walking and a writing task. The first group first executed 10 trials of the actual movements (block A) and then imagined the same movements at different intervals: immediately after actual movements (block I-1) and after 25 min (I-2), 50 min (I-3) and 75 min (I-4) interval. Human walking along a curved path. I. Body trajectory, segment orientation and the effect of vision.

Task-related characteristics of gait and segment orientation during natural locomotion along a curved path have been described in order to gain insight into the neural organization of walking. The locomotor task implied continuous deviation from straight-ahead, thereby requiring continuous adjustment of body movement to produce and assist turn-related torques. Performance was compared to straight-ahead locomotion. Subjects easily reproduced both trajectories with eyes open (EO). Withdrawal reflex organisation to electrical stimulation of the dorsal foot in humans.

The present study investigated excitatory reflex receptive fields for various muscle reflex responses and reflex mediated ankle joint movements using randomised electrical stimulation of the dorsal and plantar surface of the foot in 12 healthy subjects. Eleven electrodes (0.5-cm2 cathodes) were mounted on the dorsal side and three on the plantar side of the foot. A low (1.5 times pain threshold) and a high (2.3 times pain threshold) stimulus intensity were used to elicit the reflexes. Influence of stimulus color on the control of reaching-grasping movements.

This kinematic study aimed to determine whether color is a stimulus property involved in the control of reaching-grasping movements. Subjects reached and grasped a target-object, located either on the right or on the left of the subject's midline. A distractor, placed along the subject's midline, could be randomly presented. In the present study we addressed the issue of how an object is visually isolated from surrounding cues when a reaching-grasping (prehension) movement towards it is planned. Subjects were required to reach and grasp an object presented either alone or with a distractor.
