Differential specificity of substrate-attached lectins stimulating spreading of GH3-cells under serum-free, hormone-supplemented culture conditions
1982
Most mammalian cells are capable of growth in culture only when they are supplied with an appropriate substrate to which they can adhere and spread. To prepare suitable substrates different lectins were attached onto polystyrene tissue-culture dishes after coating with polylysine. GH3-cells (a pituitary-tumor-cell line) were seeded into the culture dishes containing serum-free, hormone-supplemented medium. When succinylated Concanavalin A (s-Con A), which binds specifically to mannose residues, is attached to the surface an extraordinary spreading of GH3-cells is induced within 15 to 20 min after seeding. Other lectins with a different sugar-binding specificity are less effective in inducin…
Mutant p53 gain of function can be at the root of dedifferentiation of human osteosarcoma MG63 cells into 3AB-OS cancer stem cells
2014
Osteosarcoma is a highly metastatic tumor affecting adolescents, for which there is no second-line chemotherapy. As suggested for most tumors, its capability to overgrow is probably driven by cancer stem cells (CSCs), and finding new targets to kill CSCs may be critical for improving patient survival. TP53 is the most frequently mutated tumor suppressor gene in cancers and mutant p53 protein (mutp53) can acquire gain of function (GOF) strongly contributing to malignancy. Studies thus far have not shown p53-GOF in osteosarcoma. Here, we investigated TP53 gene status/role in 3AB-OS cells-a highly aggressive CSC line previously selected from human osteosarcoma MG63 cells-to evaluate its involv…

El movimiento libertario español y sus manifestaciones políticas: El Partido Sindicalista como caso excepcional.
2021
In this article we analyze the Pestaña’s Syndicalist Party (SP) to better clarify some of the doctrinal contours of the heterogeneous libertarian movement. To do this, we first define a framework, understanding the libertarian movement as a political culture where we have established antipoliticism as one of its fundamental principles. Subsequently, after reviewing some of the political manifestations of the libertarian movement, we completed that framework by observing how this principle was reviewed in its practices to achieve its goals. With the study of SP’s primary sources we observe how it also emerged by reviewing anarchist antipoliticism as an instrument to achieve its objectives, b…
The Vesalian movement in sixteenth-century Spain.
1979
In the middle of the sixteenth-century under the direct influence of Vesalius's works there arose in Spain a movement devoted to the renewal of anatomical knowledge. It was one of the initial forces in the spread of the Vesalian reform, but in spite of that it has been almost completely ignored by specialized historical research.' The purpose of this article is to provide a general study of the movement with special emphasis on the conditions which determined its development. In the first place I should make it clear that the renewal in question did not arise from the relationship that Vesalius maintained throughout
Mundo obrero, cultura y asociacionismo: algunas reflexiones sobre modelos y pervivencias formales
2003
In this article, the author reflects on the associative models chosen by Spanish working and popular classes since the middle of nineteenth century in order to defend their interests, especially in the case of the difussion of culture and education. It is remarkable the continuity and success of some inherited prototypes, as it happened with the «ateneos» until the years of the Spanish civil war. At the same time, workers' organizations tried to satisfy an extensive range of demands by developing multifunctional centres. Examples of these were the «Casas del Pueblo» (People's Houses) erected by the socialist movement.
Espacio, tiempo y educación

This paper analyzes the role played by the student movement in the restitution of democracy in Spain. Taking as a starting point the situation of university under the Franco dictatorship, and how (and why) students were dealt with, the major features that set the student movement apart from other kinds of activism in that time are described and linked to the unique effects that it had on the status quo, with a special stress on its ability to generate the kind of cultural change required for overcoming the atmosphere of resignation and consent that helped to keep the government in power. The way in which culture, personal issues, and politics got intertwined is shown as a key trait of stude…
‘Then we were ready to be radicals!’ : school student activism in Finnish upper secondary schools in 1960–1967
2021
In the Western countries, Scandinavia and Finland included, the legacy of the student movement of the 1960s has been extensive and established a fixed narrative of a radical movement. This article challenges the elitists and university-centred grand narrative and argues that the student movement was more multifaceted and mobilized young people of various ages and backgrounds. This is done by addressing the international student movement from the perspective of school-aged students in Finnish upper secondary schools, focusing on student activism carried out in school-sanctioned student associations. Above all, this article aims to distinguish the relatively unknown history of the Scandinavia…
Da Düsseldorf a Lussemburgo e ritorno: “Towards Horizontal Effect For the Free Movement of Goods?”

2014
This chapter investigates companies' disclosure alignment and transparency signaling within the 2011 CSR annual reports of 36 U.S. firms in the Global Forbes 2000. DICTION 6.0 was used for the text analysis. The study found that CSR reports are fairly similar to corporate financial annual reports but can be classified more accurately as a hybrid discourse with normative elements matching genres emanating from science, business, government, religion, and social movements. Despite the relatively short time that CSR reports have been in existence, this chapter provides evidence that CSR reporting has become institutionalized quickly. The measures of transparency signaling and disclosure alignm…
