Analytical approach for the problems of dynamics and stability of a moving web

Problems of dynamics and stability of a moving web, modelled as an elastic rod or string, and axially travelling between rollers (supports) at a constant velocity, are studied using analytical approaches. Transverse, longitudinal and torsional vibrations of the moving web are described by a hyperbolic second-order partial differential equation, corresponding to the string and rod models. It is shown that in the framework of a quasi-static eigenvalue analysis, for these models, the critical point cannot be unstable. Reconstruction of urban sites from photos

Abstract. This paper reports the results of an experiment that aims at the virtual reconstruction of a urban site that has been partially reshaped during the 20th century; the reconstruction process is based on period photos. The chosen case study is the eldest harbour of Palermo, named ‘Cala’; the site was bombed during World War II and new buildings took the place of the ruined ones. Two period photos, taken from an aircraft, document the buildings that were destroyed by bombs. The paper presents the results of a field gathering campaign carried out on two different pilot scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems, treating synthetic wastewater subject to a gradual increase of salinity. One was a conventional MBR system, while the other was a moving bed biofilm membrane bioreactor (MB-MBR), which combines suspended biomass and biofilm. In this paper, we consider the static stability problems of axially moving orthotropic membranes and plates. The study is motivated by paper production processes, as paper has a fiber structure which can be described as orthotropic on the macroscopic level. The moving web is modeled as an axially moving orthotropic plate. The original dynamic plate problem is reduced to a two-dimensional spectral problem for static stability analysis, and solved using analytical techniques. In many industrial processes, such as printing paper, a material travels through a series of rollers unsupported and under longitudinal tension. The value of the tension has an important role in the system behaviour, such as fracture and me- chanical stability. This thesis develops stochastic models for a system in which an elastic, isotropic cracked material travels through a series of spans and studies the probabilities of fracture and instability of the material. International audience; The interaction of high power laser beam with metallic materials produces a number of interconnected phenomena that represent a serious challenge for numerical modeling, especially for creation of auto-consistent models. Additional difficulty consists in lack of data on materials properties at the temperatures superior to their melting point. The present work summarizes the numerical challenges in creation and validation of free-surface models using ALE moving mesh coupled with heat transfer equation and Navier-Stokes fluid flow.
