Petrogenesis of orogenic lamproites of the Bohemian Massif: Sr–Nd–Pb–Li isotope constraints for Variscan enrichment of ultra-depleted mantle domains
2016
Abstract During convergence of Gondwana-derived microplates and Laurussia in the Palaeozoic, subduction of oceanic and continental crusts and their sedimentary cover introduced material of regionally contrasting chemical and isotopic compositions into the mantle. This slab material metasomatised the local mantle, producing a highly heterogeneous lithospheric mantle beneath the European Variscides. The eastern termination of the European Variscides (Moldanubian and Saxo-Thuringian zones of Austria, Czech Republic, Germany and Poland) is unusual in that the mantle was modified by material from several subduction zones within a small area. Orogenic lamproites sampled this lithospheric mantle, …

High-Generation Amphiphilic Janus-Dendrimers as Stabilizing Agents for Drug Suspensions
2018
Pharmaceutical nanosuspensions are formed when drug crystals are suspended in aqueous media in the presence of stabilizers. This technology offers a convenient way to enhance the dissolution of poorly water-soluble drug compounds. The stabilizers exert their action through electrostatic or steric interactions, however, the molecular requirements of stabilizing agents have not been studied extensively. Here, four structurally related amphiphilic Janus-dendrimers were synthesized and screened to determine the roles of different macromolecular domains on the stabilization of drug crystals. Physical interaction and nanomilling experiments have substantiated that Janus-dendrimers with fourth gen…
(Table 1) Sea surface temperature reconstruction for eastern equatorial Pacific surface sediment samples
2012
Significant uncertainties persist in the reconstruction of past sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific, especially regarding the amplitude of the glacial cooling and the details of the post-glacial warming. Here we present the first regional calibration of alkenone unsaturation in surface sediments versus mean annual sea surface temperatures (maSST). Based on 81 new and 48 previously published data points, it is shown that open ocean samples conform to established global regressions of Uk'37 versus maSST and that there is no systematic bias from seasonality in the production or export of alkenones, or from surface ocean nutrient concentrations or salinity. The flattening…
High-performance liquid chromatographic separation of modified and native melittin following transglutaminase-mediated derivatization with a dansyl f…
1991
Abstract The 26-amino acid linear, amphiphilic peptide melittin was enzymatically modified with the fluorescent probe monodansylcadaverine using guinea pig liver transglutaminase and a fluorescent derivative of stoichiometry 1:1 was obtained. Reversed-phase and size-exclusion high-performance liquid chromatographic modes were tested in order to resolve the labelled peptide and native species. The influence of several operational variables was analysed and the elution conditions were optimized so that a satisfactory resolution could be achieved in both instances in a rapid, easy manner. Both chromatographic modes offer the possibility of accurate monitoring of the time course of the enzyme-m…
A head-to-head comparison of poly(sarcosine) and poly(ethylene glycol) in peptidic, amphiphilic block copolymers
2015
Abstract In this work we compare chemical and solution properties, like critical aggregate concentrations (CAC) and hydrodynamic radii of aggregates based on either poly(ethylene glycol) or poly(sarcosine) block copolymers in aqueous solution. The amine functionalized, hydrophilic polymers poly(sarcosine) (degree of polymerization, X n = 100 and 200) and PEG (X n = 121 and 242) of comparable hydrodynamic volume were used to initiate the ring opening polymerization of α-amino acid- N -carboxyanhydrides based on ɣ-benzyl- l -glutamate (Glu(OBn)) or e-carboxybenzyl- l -lysine (Lys(Z)). The second, hydrophobic block was kept at a degree of polymerization of 25 and 50 to enable a direct compar…

Altered host behaviour and brain serotonergic activity caused by acanthocephalans: evidence for specificity
2006
Manipulative parasites can alter the phenotype of intermediate hosts in various ways. However, it is unclear whether such changes are just by-products of infection or adaptive and enhance transmission to the final host. Here, we show that the alteration of serotonergic activity is functionally linked to the alteration of specific behaviour in the amphipodGammarus pulexinfected with acanthocephalan parasites.Pomphorhynchus laevisand, to a lesser extent,Pomphorhynchus tereticollisaltered phototactism, but not geotactism, inG. pulex, whereas the reverse was true forPolymorphus minutus. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) injected to uninfectedG. pulexmimicked the altered phototactism, but ha…
Modulatory effects of the serotonergic and histaminergic systems on reaction to light in the crustacean Gammarus pulex
2013
Serotonin modulates reaction to light in many animals. In the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex, exogenous administration of serotonin induces a transient reversal of photic behaviour from strong photophobia to photophily. We have elucidated further the neuromodulation of photic behaviour in G. pulex by using in vivo pharmacology and behavioural testing. Using several mammalian 5-HT receptor antagonists and agonists, we provide evidence for a role of serotonin receptors in the 5-HT-dependent regulation of G. pulex photic behaviour, possibly involving 5-HTR2 subtype. Serotonin-induced photophily was blocked by the 5-HT receptor antagonists, mianserin, cyproheptadine, and ritanserin, but not…
