Pharmacokinetic evaluation of mycophenolate mofetil for pemphigus.

2011

Introduction: Pemphigus is an autoimmune blistering disease of the skin and mucous membranes characterized by the development of autoantibodies against the desmosomal proteins, desmoglein-1 and -3. Before the advent of corticosteroids, therapy was almost fatal. The introduction of high-dose corticosteroid therapy has reduced mortality rates to similar to 10%, but long-term use of steroids can lead to side effects, many of which are severe and associated with significant morbidity. Thus, the major goal of pemphigus therapy has been to reduce the patient's cumulative exposure to systemic corticosteroids. Over the last 2 decades, a range of corticosteroid-sparing immunosuppressive agents have …

Enteric-coated mycophenolate sodium in the treatment of refractory pemphigus

2010

Background  One of the major goals of pemphigus therapy is to reduce the patient’s cumulative exposure to systemic corticosteroids. To investigate the efficacy of enteric-coated mycophenolate sodium (EC-MPS), 10 patients with active, refractory pemphigus vulgaris (PV) or foliaceous (PF) were treated with EC-MPS (1440 mg daily) and prednisone (75 mg daily) over 18 months. Observations  Following EC-MPS/prednisone therapy, disease progression was inhibited between days 30 and 45 in 9/10 patients (8 PV; 1 PF). At 18 months, 8/9 PV patients had clinically quiescent disease; EC-MPS therapy was no longer required in two patients as a result of disease remission. The remaining PV patient showed no…

Sediment quality of the ecoregion Engure, Gulf of Riga, assessed by using ecotoxicity tests and biomarker responses

2014

Testorganismu izdzīvotība bija robežās no 8…

Spatial Cognition 2020/1: Book of abstracts : August 2-4, 2021, University of Latvia

2021

Spatial Cognition is concerned with the acquisition, development, representation, organization, and use of knowledge about spatial objects in real, virtual or hybrid environments and processed by human or artificial agents. Spatial Cognition includes research from different fields insofar as they are concerned with cognitive agents and space, such as cognitive and developmental psychology, linguistics, computer science, geography, cartography, philosophy, neuroscience, and education. Research issues in the field range from the investigation of human spatial cognition to mobile robot navigation, including topics such as wayfinding, spatial planning, spatial learning, internal and external re…

Acidity and basicity of primaryN-phenylnitramines: catalytic effect of protons on the nitramine rearrangement

2002

Para-substituted N-phenylnitramines were prepared either by oxidation of diazonium salts or by nitration under alkaline or acidic conditions. Isotopic [15N-NO2] labelling indicated that the bands characteristic of the N-nitro group appear in the 1318–1323 and 1585–1607 cm−1 regions. In the nitrogen NMR spectra, the nitramino group gives two resonances at −193 ± 3 (NH) and −32 ± 3 ppm (NO2). The chemical shifts in proton and carbon NMR spectra are predictable, based on increments and the additivity rule. The spectral data indicate the lack of conjugation between the nitramino group and another substituent bound to the ring. It seems to contradict the well-known fact that substituents strongl…

Selective Fatty Acid Retention and Turnover in the Freshwater Amphipod Pallaseopsis quadrispinosa

2021

Gammarid amphipods are a crucial link connecting primary producers with secondary consumers, but little is known about their nutritional ecology. Here we asked how starvation and subsequent feeding on different nutritional quality algae influences fatty acid retention, compound-specific isotopic carbon fractionation, and biosynthesis of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the relict gammarid amphipod Pallaseopsis quadrispinosa. The fatty acid profiles of P. quadrispinosa closely matched with those of the dietary green algae after only seven days of refeeding, whereas fatty acid patterns of P. quadrispinosa were less consistent with those of the diatom diet. This was ma…

Factitial pemphigus-like lesions

2007

The maxillofacial region is rarely subjected to self-inflicted conditions such as factitious disease. Nasal ulceration, facial emphysema, periorbital ecchymosis, mandibular subluxation, gingival and mucosal ulceration, dental and salivary gland pain and glossopharyngeal neuralgia have been reported as possible manifestations of factitious disease. We report a case of a young woman who presented with unilateral bullous and ulcerative oral and erythematous facial lesions that were initially diagnosed as pemphigus vulgaris but was later determined to be secondary to self-inflicted injuries. To the best of the authors? knowledge, this clinical scenario has not been previously reported in the co…

Hexagonal Microparticles from Hierarchical Self-Organization of Chiral Trigonal Pd3L6 Macrotetracycles

2021

Construction of structurally complex architectures using inherently chiral, asymmetric, or multi-heterotopic ligands is a major challenge in metallosupramolecular chemistry. Moreover, the hierarchical self-organization of such complexes is unique. Here, we introduce a water-soluble, facially amphiphilic, amphoteric, chiral, asymmetric, and hetero-tritopic ligand derived from natural bile acid, ursodeoxycholic acid. We show that via the supramolecular transmetalation reaction, using nitrates of Cu(II) or Fe(III), and subsequently Pd(II), a superchiral Pd3L6 complex can be obtained. Even though several possible constitutional isomers of Pd3L6 could be formed, because of the ligand asymmetry a…

Hetero-difunctional dimers as building blocks for the synthesis of poly(amidoamine)s with hetero-difunctional chain terminals and their derivatives

2012

This article reports on a simple and straightforward preparation method of poly(amidoamine)s (PAAs) with hetero-difunctional chain ends as well as of several up to now hardly obtainable PAA derivatives of biotechnological interest, such as for instance PAAs of controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity mono-functionalized at one end with an acrylamide group, PAAs with star-like molecular architecture, graft-PAA-protein conjugates, “tadpole-like” PAA conjugates with hydrophobic moieties able to self assemble into nanoparticles in aqueous media. The key step was to design suitable building blocks consisting of hetero-difunctional dimers (HDDs). In particular, the HDDs considered we…
