On some relations betweenkoklesstyles and contexts in the twentieth century

2000

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to discuss traditional and modern styles for playing the kokles (the Latvian variation of the Baltic psaltery or board zither). To answer questions about the nature of kokles styles today and about their relation to earlier rural traditions, musical events are viewed in their personal, social, and cultural contexts. A scheme for the correlation of different styles is offered, according to which symbolic, artistic, folkloric, and post-folkloric groupings may be distinguished.

Death and Transfiguration : The Late Kim Jong-il Aesthetic in North Korean Cultural Production

2016

This article assesses the official music scene in Pyongyang over a span of five dramatic years, surveying how changes in the field of music from 2009 to 2014 mirrored and in some cases presaged North Korean dynastic succession and political consolidation. The article draws upon a new abundance of performance data on North Korean musical groups, data which we argue is important but has largely been ignored or mischaracterized heretofore. The central crisis dealt with in the article is the decline and demise of Kim Jong-il, the architect of North Korea’s musical culture. In his final years, Kim Jong-il assented to the creation of a new leading musical group known as the Unhasu Orchestra, prom…

Música, democratización y omnivoridad

2008

In the field of the analysis of culture, the theory of omnivorousness holds that aesthe…

Dynamic Perception of Plastic Movements: Biomechanics and Digital Artifacts

2017

The article offers some reflections on the body-space relationship through images, graphic translations and visual studies that converge into a contemporary digital illuminated avant-garde of the fourth virtual dimension. Starting from the study of the Soviet coreutics of the 1920s and the biomechanics of multimedia performances, it moves on the cinesthetic suggestions and to the dance theorization integrated with the musical score. Finally, some contemporary forms of digital image production are taken into account by addressing a number of issues regarding the exploration of the object-image and its experiential re-elaboration through the production of new graphic knowledge.

The phantoms of the opera—Stress offstage and stress onstage

2021

During opera performance singers deliver vocally demanding roles, follow a conductor, portray emotions of a musical work, act, dance, and engage with costumes, sets and props before an audience. Hence, opera performance is a stressful experience. This study examined different types of stress experiences by measuring the trajectories of 10 opera trainees’ heart rate variability (HRV) during two performances, covering onstage and offstage periods. We explored connections between HRV, self-reported stress measures, and expert-rated difficulty of the performed roles. We discovered that opera trainees had lower HRV and thus experienced greater physiological stress, while onstage compared to off…

Embodiment in Electronic Dance Music: Effects of musical content and structure on body movement

2018

Electronic dance music (EDM) is music produced with the foremost aim to make people move. While research has revealed relationships between movement features and, for example, musical, emotional, or personality characteristics, systematic investigations of genre differences and specifically of EDM are rather rare. This article aims at offering insights into the embodiment of EDM from three different angles: first from a genre-comparison perspective, then by comparing different EDM stimuli with each other, and finally by investigating embodiments in one specific EDM stimulus. Sixty participants moved freely to 16 stimuli of four different genres (EDM, Latin, Funk, Jazz – four stimuli/genre)…

Della musica e delle parole

2018

This article explores the relations between music and poetry, starting form Rousseau's theory of the origin of languages. Two main distinctions are considered: when poetry is written before music, and when music is written before poetry. "Non più andrai farfallone amoroso" by Daponte and Mozart is examined as an example of the first strategy; "Yesterday" by Paul McCartney as an example of the second one.
