L'ombra lunga di Zarlino
2021
"The long shadow of Zarlino" · The first part is devoted to high¬lighting the special relevance modes have in Zarlino’s writings, where they are considered as “the forms of the compositions”. Zarlino reconsid¬ers, revises, and reorganizes modes from book to book. A crucial point is in the Dimostrationi Harmoniche (1571), with the proposal of a new modal order that no longer begins with D but rather with C. Zarlino wants to convince his readers that this new order is more rational and coherent than the previous one, since all the species of the perfect intervals (diapa¬son, diapente, diatessaron) now start from the same note, C. Moreover, the sequence of the finales finally coincides with th…
The Craft of (Re-)Presenting Musical Works
2021
In this chapter, I explore the encounters between music and participants in learning environments. The encounters I refer to are situations when a teacher or instructor presents music intending to involve participants in responsive activities. The activities can be dialogues about music and meaning, creative music-making or construction of performances, the writing of poems or narratives inspired by the music, creating dances based on the music or singing or playing a selected repertoire. The discussion is primarily related to music listening as a curriculum element in schools and higher music teacher education, and the chapter seeks to analyse strategies and competencies which may be defin…
Souffrir en musique
1994
Suffering to Music - Although, in its relation to suffering, music is generally reputed for possessing therapeutic virtues, several iconographie and written sources dating from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries attribute a harmful influence to music. This ambivalence was based on the correlation between the intensity of suffering and that of the sonorous quality of musical instruments, which in the Middle Ages were divided into two great families in accordance to the sound volume they produced. Consequently it was according to their high and strident or low and soft sonorities that the instruments were thought to act on suffering, either amplifying it or alleviating it.

Connexions entre el ball i la prostitució en la tardor medieval : fembres pecadrius, reis arlots i çabies
2020
Paraules clau: ball, prostitutes, rei Arlot, çabies, tarquena, edat mitjanaAbstract: This study shows the close relationship betwee…

Anne Truelove e Baba the Turk: immagini del femminile in The Rake's Progress (1947-51) di Igor Stravinsky
2018

Opera Ludica. Alcune riflessioni sul gioco a carte nel teatro musicale fra Ottocento e Novecento
2010
The essay aims to shed light on the relationship between opera and play, focusing on the card scenes in four operatic masterpieces of the 19th and 20th centuries: "Carmen" (1875), "The Queen of Spades" (1890), "The Girl of the Golden West" (1910) and "The Rake’s Progress" (1951). In these operas, the idea of play is much more than a simple cue or thematic subject: it has a substantial and paradigmatic function, directly connected with the dramaturgic and musical architecture of the work. On the other hand, these operas share some features that can be linked to the idea of time and to the metalinguistic value of play: although play and music take place in time, they tend to annul it, thus en…
The Human-Animal Relationship and the Musical Metaphor in The Great Animal Orchestra by Bernie Krause
2018
Taking as case study the discourse of The Great Animal Orchestra, the following paper presents the sociosemiotic analysis carried out on the work by Bernie Krause, focusing especially on the analysis of the CD The Great Animal Orchestra Symphony, of the exposition Le Grand Orchestre des Animaux and of the related Internet sites, which followed his first wider public presentation The Great Animal Orchestra: Finding the Origins of Music in the World’s Wild Places. Through the musical metaphor, Krause’s discourse calls again into question the human-animal relationship, reversing the common meanings – this discovered animal culture stands opposite to contemporary human barbarity – and approachi…
