A review of oral biopsies in children and adolescents: a clinicopathological study of a case series

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathological features of oral lesions in children and adolescents diagnosed in an Oral Pathology Laboratory. Study design: Between 2000 and 2010, all oral lesions diagnosed in patients younger than 18 years old, from the Oral Pathology Laboratory, Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, were selected for the study. The clinical data were obtained from the patient charts filed in the Laboratory. All cases were microscopically reviewed and the diagnosis classified into 10 categories. BACKGROUND Arachnoid cysts of the paranasal sinus are rare. They have not been described yet in the sphenoid sinus. PATIENT AND METHOD Microscopic-endoscopic endonasal surgery of the sphenoid sinus was performed on a 34-year-old female with a history of chronic headaches and a suspected mucocele of the sphenoid sinus in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. An extended arachnoid cyst was found in the enlarged sphenoid sinus, which was obliterated with collagen, fibrin glue, and abdominal fat. Ultrasound is commonly performed to diagnose pathological processes of the neck and the salivary glands. In contrast, pathological changes of the sinuses and the bony structures of the face are only rarely examined sonographically. This paper deals with the diagnostic scope of ultrasound in the case of orbital and nasal fractures as well as for cases of sinus pathology excluding acute sinusitis. 51 patients with different diseases of this area were examined using US and X-ray or CT scan. Sphenoid sinus mucocele : an unusual complication of head and neck irradiation in a North African woman

Mucocele is a common benign lesion otherwise rarely located in the sphenoid sinus. Some complications after head and neck irradiation have been described in the literature until now. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a sphenoid sinus mucocele in a North African patient treated some years before with radiotherapy for a nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We extend the literature review about this infrequent finding, of which head and neck surgeons should be aware.
