Improvement of quality of life during treatment with anabolic therapy: Results of a multicenter study

2012

Efficacy and safety of daily treatment with parathyroid hormone were evaluated in a typical Italian population with severe post-menopausal osteoporosis eligible to anabolic treatment (Nota 79 AIFA). Materials and methods: 204 ambulatory female patients (median age: 72.6±8.3 years; height: 155.3±6.5 cm; weight: 61.1±11.9 Kg) with severe post-menopausal osteoporosis have been enrolled in this study accordingly to summary of product characteristics and Italian reimbursement criteria for osteoporosis drugs (Nota 79 AIFA), between January 2008 and April 2009 (Last Patient Out: October 2010). 146 (71.57%) out of these patients completed the study.6 visits were planned in the study protocol: basel…

Lipoprotein apheresis for Lp(a)-hyperlipoproteinemia with progressive cardiovascular disease--Additional particular aspects of the Pro(a)LiFe multice…

2015

Lipoprotein apheresis (LA) can lower LDL-cholesterol and Lp(a) by 60%-70% and is the final escalating option in patients with hyperlipoproteinemias involving LDL or Lp(a) particles. Major therapeutic effect of LA is preventing cardiovascular events. In Germany since 2008 a reimbursement guideline has been implemented accepting to establish the indication for LA not only for familial or severe forms of hypercholesterolemia but also based on Lp(a)-hyperlipoproteinemia associated with a progressive course of cardiovascular disease, that persists despite effective treatment of other concomitant cardiovascular risk factors. The Pro(a)LiFe-study confirmed with a prospective multicenter design tha…

Italian version of qualiveen-30: Cultural adaptation of a neurogenic urinary disorder-specific instrument

2011

Purpose Qualiveen-30 is a neurological urinary disorder (UD)-specific health-related quality of life (HRQL) instrument, recommended in the European Association of Urology guideline 2008. The objective is to complete the cultural adaptation of Qualiveen-30 into Italian. Materials and Methods One hundred and twenty eight Italian-speaking spinal cord injury (SCI) patients completed Qualiveen-30 and the SF-12 physical and mental component (PC and MC) at enrolment and 4 weeks later. At follow-up, patients also made global ratings of change (GRC) in urinary HRQL (GRC). Results Qualiveen-30 proved reliable (intraclass correlation coefficients of four domains: 0.77–0.90). Correlations with SF-12 an…

Correlation between short-term air pollution exposure and unprovoked lung embolism. Prospective observational (Contamina-TEP Group)

2020

Background The aim was to analyze the temporal relationship between short-term air pollution exposure and acute symptomatic unprovoked pulmonary embolism (PE). Patients/methods We performed a prospective, multicenter study in consecutive patients diagnosed with acute symptomatic unprovoked PE from February 2012 to January 2013. We analyzed demographic and clinical data, patients' addresses, meteorological and air pollutants data (PM10, SO2, CO, NO2, ozone emission data). We considered the number of days the patient had symptoms, and the study period constituted the previous 30 days. Likewise, the mean annual data of the reference season were calculated as well as the data of the 30-day stud…

Pharmacological treatment of sexual offenders in German outpatient treatment centers

2018

In Germany, depending on a sexual offender's culpability and the severity of the offence, he/she can be placed either in the forensic-psychiatric or the correctional system. Numbers related to the pharmacological treatment of sexual offenders for the correctional system are missing so far. In sexual offenders, the pharmacological treatment of paraphilic disorders is of special importance. The present study aimed at assessing the prevalence of pharmacological sexual offender treatment in German outpatient treatment centers supervising mainly clients from the correctional sector. An online questionnaire was sent to 112 outpatient treatment centers and 21 provided data relevant for the present…

Prevalence, management, and outcome of adverse rhythm disorders in takotsubo syndrome: insights from the international multicenter GEIST registry

2019

One important complication related to takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is adverse rhythm disorders. Our study was conducted to determine the incidence and management of adverse rhythm disorders in TTS and its long-term prognostic impact. We analyzed 906 TTS patients from 9 European centers. Patients were divided into the adverse rhythm disorders group (encompassing ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, torsade de pointes, and asystole or complete atrioventricular block) and non-adverse rhythm disorders group. In our study cohort, we identified 67 (7.4%) patients with presence of adverse rhythm disorders. TTS patients were followed up over a period of 2.8 years. In the adverse rhythm di…

Can adherence to the Mediterranean diet prevent myocardial infarction? Answers from an Italian study

2015

Background The Mediterranean-style diet, with a focus on vegetables, fruit, fish, whole grains, and olive oil, has proven to reduce cardiovascular events. This case control study add epidemiological data, covering the lack in Italian context, on the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MDA) and non-fatal acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in multicenter study covering …

Background The cardiac diagnostic workup of stroke patients, especially the value of echocardiography and enhanced and prolonged Holter-ECG monitoring, is still a matter of debate. We aimed to analyse the impact of pathologies detected by echocardiography and ECG monitoring on therapeutic decisions and prognosis. Methods Find-AFRANDOMISED was a prospective multicenter study which randomised 398 acute ischemic stroke patients ≥ 60 years to enhanced and prolonged Holter-ECG monitoring or usual stroke unit care. This substudy compared therapeutic consequences of echocardiography and routine Holter-ECG or enhanced and prolonged Holter-ECG monitoring, respectively, and prognosis of patients with…

A multicenter survey on access to care in Multiple Sclerosis-related trigeminal neuralgia

2021

The prevalence of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is higher than in the general population and its management can be particularly challenging due to a number of reasons including high recurrence rates, lack of MS-specific treatment guidelines and uncertainties about pain pathophysiology. Aim of this cross-sectional, multicentre survey was to gather information on the current treatment modalities and options of MS-related TN across 23 Italian MS centres. Initial medical management (carbamazepine or oxcarbazepine) of MS-related TN was fairly homogeneous throughout Italian centres. The most commonly available surgical procedure was microvascular decompression…

Osmophobia in migraine classification: a multicentre study in juvenile patients.

2010

Aims: This study was planned to investigate the diagnostic utility of osmophobia as criterion for migraine without aura (MO) as proposed in the Appendix (A1.1) of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-II, 2004). Methods: We analysed 1020 patients presenting at 10 Italian juvenile headache centres, 622 affected by migraine (M) and 328 by tension-type headache (TTH); 70 were affected by headache not elsewhere classified (NEC) in ICHD-II. By using a semi-structured questionnaire, the prevalence of osmophobia was 26.9%, significantly higher in M than TTH patients (34.6% vs 14.3%). Results: Osmophobia was correlated with: (i) family history of M and osmophobia; and (ii) o…
