Wielokulturowość : przekraczanie (nie)widzialnych granic
2018
At first the interest in multiculturalism started in societies shaped by the immigration process. They were Canada and Australia, which in the 70s adopted, as the foundation of existence, the official policy of multiculturalism. Today, the interest in multiculturalism is centered mainly on Western European countries and increasingly Central-Eastern Europe. This is connected with the increasing number of refugees and immigrants arriving on the Old Continent. This situation is perceived as an important cause of many problems, including, above all, terrorist acts. The events in France, Belgium or Germany confirm such a thinking. Contemporary interest in multiculturalism helps its unequivocal u…

The Undesired Other
2019
Over the recent years, the theme of abortion has set in the agenda of many countries. Although the abortion law was already present in France, the US and the UK, in some other countries the law was recently sanctioned just after the 2000s. This chapter deals with the problem of hospitality in the days of terrorism. From different angles, this chapter explores the question of abortion and the ideas of hospitality and multiculturalism, points that modern terrorism has instilled as necessary debates. We hold the thesis that the modern self has serious problems to understand the alterity when it confronts the own desires. The right of legal abortion should be framed as a decline of hospitality,…
Medizinethische Aspekte im Umgang mit muslimischen Patienten
2007
In today's world, the plurality of values is considered to be a constitutive feature of modern societies. In these societies, transcultural patient-physician relationships are a part of daily medical practice. Culturally determined value systems can be crucial for understanding the perception of notions such as "health" and "illness", leading to fundamental differences in assessing medical interventions and therapeutic objectives. Therefore, transcultural conflicts of interest are presenting medical ethical decision-making with new challenges. Time and again, medical practice demonstrates that cultural differences between physician and patient are correlated with the complexity of medical e…
Finnishness, Whiteness and Coloniality
2022
This multidisciplinary volume reflects the shifting experiences and framings of Finnishness and its relation to race and coloniality. The authors centre their investigations on whiteness and unravel the cultural myth of a normative Finnish (white) ethnicity. Rather than presenting a unified definition for whiteness, the book gives space to the different understandings and analyses of its authors. This collection of case-studies illuminates how Indigenous and ethnic minorities have participated in defining notions of Finnishness, how historical and recent processes of migration have challenged the traditional conceptualisations of the nation-state and its population, and how imperial relatio…
Defining culture and interculturality in the workplace: how cultures interact within organisations
2009
Texte d'une présentation orale (panel); This communication seeks to define the notions of cross-cultural, intercultural and multicultural communication, by considering the relationship between culture and communication processes. By situating culture on the level of the social group (company culture, departmental culture, and not simply national or “ethnic minority” culture) it becomes possible to identify more clearly the influence of different “cultures” on interactions within the workplace, and their impact on the form of the organisation itself. If interculturality is a process associated with multicultural settings, whether on a micro-social (interactional), meso-social (organisational…
Multiethnic Japanese-English Bilinguals' Meal Time Talk
2014
This study employs sequential conversation analysis and membership categorization analysis to codeswitching multiethnic, multicultural and multilingual Japanese-English speakers. The research examines how participants accomplish social actions and goals such as teasing, planning schedules, complaining about family members, and being friends. In doing these social actions, transportable ethnic, linguistic, and cultural identities become emergent. Hence, this research shows instances of linguistic, multiethnic, and multicultural categories constructed and utilized for situational tasks and locally emergent goals. Furthermore, this study sees acts of codeswitching as a communicative resource t…
